You know if we do hire from within, Coach Wilson and Coach Chance are the ones with playcalling experience. I'm not at all saying that that the other two wouldn't be good choices though. I also have a coaching friend from Oklahoma that informed me that Heacock interviewed for the Ok St job when it was open, so I don't know that he wouldn't leave.

Do you prefer that stand up end that many DCs are using that have coverage responsibilities too, or do you prefer a more specialized DE?

I agree Coach that (projected) stability, the liklihood of continuing for 5+ years as Oregon DC, is one of the important screening variables for the hire. I would not have agreed with hiring internal staff two years ago, but after Avalos' impact, we may have a coach on staff who can be outstanding as DC.

That's an impressive list, Coach, getting one of them to join his staff would be a significant step towards his building of a championship team at Oregon. Muschamp is the biggest name,  Lupoi has worked with Mario at Alabama, and at different schools in the Pac-12, where he was an ace recruiter. The three others on your list also have solid credentials and would be a great addition to the team.

I live in South Carolina and have carefully watched Coach Muschamp over his tenure as a Gamecock. As his teams struggled, the sports media frequently questioned his HC skills, but continually noted his ability as DC referring to his great defensive mind. That may be so, but I have a hard time seeing him and his family adapting to Eugene and Oregon. Hiring Will Muschamp presents more risk than upside IMO.

  3. A few more thoughts:

    - Sometimes finding ways to make "gamers" successful by exploiting their assets is more effective than forcing them into roles.

    - Oregon is "Track U". Why can't Cristobal and Johnson collaborate to bring dual sport speedsters to Eugene? Eugene has the best track in the world - unparalleled elsewhere. We have the Worlds, Trials and NCAA's biggest meets coming. C'mon coaches focus. Get some Transfer Portal mojo working.

    - There were signs this year a few times of bad attitudes, entitlement, poor spotsmanship and not playing every play through the whistle.

Numerous contributors have mentioned TE's (change coach), the need for speed and needing a big, bruising workhorse back. These are all points with merit requiring xmchange.

    Go Ducks! Go Coaches.

I for one am a bit apprehensive about which DUCK team shows up tomorrow. Not sure who starts at QB but my guess is if it is Shough he will be on a short leash.

Just who is the QB coach for our DUCKS?

You raise a good question SRD. I wonder the same and would like to know the dynamics and authorities for QB's. We'll never know.

  5. Many readers and countless fans will agree with your premises, Joshua. I feel similar feelings but come away with another conclusion. Tomorrow's game is unlikely to decide Tyler's future and fate as Oregon's starting QB going forward to the  2021 season.

The off-season development of the QB's, along with spring and summer camp competitions and preseason game results will determine which one starts when the conference games launch.

Given the make-up of those in the QB room one may take over another on the depth chart through the season, so the Ducks might end up with a different QB than they begin with.

  6. Many astute comments were made by the Coach. I appreciate the value Coach put on playing together and fun, both which stand out for these teams.

Hardy at times concerns me with his high frequent dribble and out-of-control body. He is strong and plays with high energy. Will Richardson spelled by Hardy should produce upside results.

I agree both the Women and Men’s teams are a pleasure to watch. I will try to see every game his season.

  7. The Fiesta Bowl match up with the Iowa State Cyclones is coming into focus and getting closer to game day. January 2nd is two weeks away.

What are the keys to the game? What will the Cyclone coaches see in game planning and how will they attack the Ducks? The USC game provides a too small sample size, but the Ducks defense has come alive. The team leaders had break out performances to match their immense abilities and skills.

The offense showed vulnerability against the rush. Tyler Shough, as in other recent games, exhibited signs of panic under pressure. The panic manifested itself in faulty decision making. The panic resulted in difficulties sensing and staying in the pocket. Panic caused the QB to flee. Panic interrupted read sequencing. And among other outcomes repeated panic changed the flow of the game and blew up the concentration of the QB.

ISU has one of the country's premier defenses. Its rushing defense held opponents to 104.6 yards per game over the season allowing only 9 rushing TD's. Counting Red Zone performance on offense the Cyclones were 30 of 46 scoring once inside the 20 yard line. The defense held ISU opponents to 15 of 33 by comparison. ISU's defense racked up 28 sacks. Eeks!

We can be certain that the game film analysis show plays where Shough became shook. I'm quite certain that Shough's tendencies, and the weak spots in Oregon's offensive protection will be listed along with dissecting what the QB resorts to - where does he look, step, run and throw - when pressured from differing angles. I expect that ISU will bring the heat relentlessly in the first few series to change the garme in their favor.

For every action their is a reaction. If he heat is on, will we dump the ball off underneath the coverage,  throw inside slants, use screens and stay outside the middle to defeat the rush? It will be important for Tyler Shough to make plays early in the game to build his confidence. Early sacks and pressure on the QB could set the stage for a loss and dig a hole too deep for recovery. How would you scheme to defeat the ISU rush?

The Ducks can do it. Will they? Will the coaches give the Ducks the game plan, play calls and make adjustments to win? If they do,  can the Ducks execute?

This is why we watch the games. Go Ducks in '21.

There is a whole new year ahead..

  8. Like the fact you are looking ahead "30". Let's leave 2020 behind and have a Fiesta.

A win over ISU is the first building block on a big run to 3Peat. The defense played with reckless abandon against the Trojans. I am confident that they will show up again against the Cyclones. Since the offense faltered at times in the Title game, I'm looking for a big adjustment and the corresponding win as our Duck coaches turn the offense loose, playing the hot hands at the skills positions while the big boys up front play their best game of the abbreviated season.
