  1. I think the admin needs to be aware of the potential culture fits moving forward. The Oregon job has a ton to offer, but it is 100 miles to the nearest major city which isn't ideal for everyone. Have got to find someone that not only wants to coach the ducks, but wants to raise their family/live in Eugene.

Dan Radakovich as AD (from Clemson) at Miami says more to me that staff is looking for someone with east coast ties/east coast recruiting. This could mean Lane Kiffin is the more likely candidate at this point. But lets see how tonight plays out!

Perhaps, but Radakovich is also a Miami Alum, so perhaps it was just him liking the opportunity to go back to his alma mater and not a coastal focus.

Why would MC sign a new contract the other week? That part doesn't make sense to me. If Mario wants to leave, so be it. Oregon is a good product and will be fine, with or without Cristobal.

I believe that extension recently was auto triggered based on win total from a contract clause, if that is what you are referring to. I think it is something to the effect of when 9 wins is reached it automatically extends it one year, or something to that effect. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

    2 BIG THINGS....

Who is going to hire him, NO AD

Who is he going to replace, THEY STILL HAVE A COACH.

Definitely agree, however I am trying not to ignore that things like this can be in motion for some time, waiting for the right moment, and well hidden if done correctly (see USC). And while these are facts today, it doesn't guarantee they will still hold true Saturday morning, as they change with a pen stroke.

  5. There is a ceiling in the form of Alabama and Georgia in the SEC at the moment, with other potential giants that are currently sleeping in the form of Florida and LSU. There is the building challenge of TAMU and future bumps in the road of Texas and Oklahoma. He could go 6-6 next year there and that doesn't even mean his team is bad.

I am not saying anyone should be running scared from a job at ole miss necessarily, but I think if you are the right coach and can get the right support going, getting to the CFP is going to be easier basically anywhere else at the moment. If reaching the CFP is goal 1, I think it is arguable that it is more likely to happen at an ACC or PAC school.

  6. Thank you for sharing!

I agree very much with the reasons he has to be content, and that a contract correction to reflect the current market should be underway if that part is accurate.

That said, and this isn't exclusive to this situation, I think it should never be a stunning turn of events for someone to take an opportunity to return to their original community and coach at their alma mater.

That draw is real for a lot of people regardless of the profession. I would however be stunned if he took a job anywhere but Miami, personally.

Not to be rude to the Miami fans/pages/university but they all seem very overconfident in what they have.

Their is honestly one thing I can think of that Miami has that can lead him away from Oregon. That is his mom.

Miami doesn't have better boosters, better facilities, better administration. They likely can't compete in money. They don't have an Athletic Director.

If Mario leaves it will be for his mom. That is the only reason he leaves. And given that he helped correct oregon after helfrich and Taggart. Mario will always be a Duck. He proved oregon is a top 10 recruiting place and could win back-back-back pac12 titles. He also will have a fantastic staff in place many of which would likely stay and get promotions rather than follow him out east.

I also like the point of why would moorehead leave if he has a chance at being the oregon head coach.

While you may be absolutely correct I think you are omitting a few not insignificant possible draws for MC. These are some key differences, excluding money and facilities:

He may want to be closer to his other family members as well (and wife's family)

He may have always wanted to lead his college alma mater considering his experience as a student athlete there.

He may want to be in a community with more people that share his culture/heritage (Cuban-American)

He may want his kids to go to the same prestigious private high school he did (Columbus)

He may prefer a large city over a small city

He may prefer having the most fertile recruiting ground a drive away as opposed to a flight away.

While it would be tough to lose what I consider a really strong fit for the Oregon job, I could see leaving for these reasons assuming the money was reasonably comparable. I certainly won't think of him as a traitor or less of a contributor for the turnaround under his watch.

  8. 4 million is all of the sudden a small salary when you are talking about a coach that is capable of winning a power 5 conference annually with recruiting prowess and a decent coordinator up to this point. I can understand not wanting to pay him over ten like some of these new contracts, but he should probably be at around at least 8/year unless the decision makers think they can find someone who will win more games for less.

The market has decided what a high end coach is worth, it was a wild jump, but the jump happened and any school that values their staff needs to be prepared to be competitive or lose the coach. It would be foolish to expect someone to leave millions of dollars per year on the table, and I wouldn't fault them if they chose not to do so.

Actually, Moorhead has a history there. If he wants to be a head coach at a power 5 school again, it's probably an easier leap as a head coach as opposed to an OC.

I agree. I think the last three seasons records at Akron are 0-12, 1-5, and 2-10. If he can get them to bowl eligibility and show his system be effective over the next 2-3 seasons he will all of the sudden be a name on some short lists for a power five job looking to make a change.

Whether the Riley hire makes you nervous or not,  it’s a great move and will be a big factor in west coast recruiting, but not the only factor.  Location and vision play a big part as well in the eyes of recruits.

The disadvantages of being in the LA basin as compared to more inviting and livable environs like Eugene, plus our new indoor training complex that will specifically target warming trends that affect air quality are equally important, especially to parents.

We’ve got our advantages too, and MC knows that.

Inviting and livable is subjective. Not everyone prefers a small college city feel.

They had better be willing to spend it on a stadium on campus. They also better be willing to lower their entrance scores for student athletes. As of now, athletes are held to the same standards as other students. This isn’t the 80’s and 90’s anymore. And don’t bring up 2001. That was solely due to Butch Davis’ loose interpretation of NCAA rules. Just look at his record at UNC.

They won’t, never have (the orange bowl was not on campus) and never will. There isn’t space and Coral Gables wouldn’t allow it if there was.

It is a small private school, students wouldn’t fill it up on campus because there aren’t many students.

Attendance issues have everything to do with team performance and competition for attention in the city of Miami. It isn’t a college town, you have to earn money and time with the on-field product on a Saturday when your attendance isn’t alumni  driven and you aren’t the only show in town, or the region for that matter.

Well, one could look at it this way. We ALWAYS knew the LOYALTY TEST was coming sooner or later. Best that it is sooner. IS MC a REAL DUCK or just another imposter? Is he willing to listen to the criticisms instead of deflecting them, admit his mistakes, learn, improve, and work harder to be a better coach for our team - or not? So let's find out NOW and not waste any more time.

I can appreciate what you are saying here completely. But who is the test of loyalty really to if the other party is your home town, your family, your community, and your alma mater?

I think if removed from the situation, the perspective on this could be that it isn’t a slight on UO.

“The U” needs much deeper pockets if they want to match Uncle Phil. That is, if PK wants to keep MC around. I’ve heard he’s willing to do what it takes to keep him. Miami is probably looking for the alumni discount.

Miami is not without billionaires in their booster ranks. And there has never been a time like now that a desire to change course has been shared amongst the president, a large contingent of the BOT, and the alumni/boosters.

It has not been a matter of having money, it has been a matter of willingness to spend it.  Mario is not unhappy in Eugene, but in order to stay it should be expected that he will have a significantly better contract. He will be the number one candidate at Miami when the AD is in place, and they are not going to assume he will take a pay cut relative to his value to come home.

I dont think Fla is going to offer Mario a job. He's not offensively minded enough. Miami maybe.

I don't think there is any maybe about it. There is a ton of support for Mario amongst the donors/some of the BOT members. When an AD is hired (outside firm to conduct this) and if (when) a coaching change occurs, Mario will almost certainly be the first name on the list.

With the financial restructuring anticipated in the Miami athletic department the expectation should be that the offer is going to exceed the current salary  in Eugene comfortably.

Oregon is a great job however, better in all aspects beside local talent, and the draw to home and a big city so it should not be assumed that Mario will leave even if that offer comes.
