  1. Focus on Hawaii.

On Sunday-Friday for Oregon it should be:

    Film study

    Radio silence

    Hard coaching

    Scheme perfection

    Ignore the hype

Understanding that Oregon has superior personnel, specifically better O and D-lines, Edge, QB, RBs, DBs (except that Hunter guy, he's a unicorn) and arguably WRs. And home field advantage.

Love him or hate him, Neon Prime has done Oregon a solid by bringing attention to this game. DL's earlier comments were perhaps inopportune but really have little impact outside of a Colorado locker room grease board. DL and the Ducks will not underestimate Colorado. The Autzen crowd will be amped.

It'll be interesting to see what the Vegas line is come Sunday. If it's -13 Ducks, bettors have not yet bought into the Coach Prime hype train. Under -7 and money is talking. Not necessarily an indicator of the outcome but less supportive of Oregon.

Back to point one, focus on Hawaii and clean up the messy stuff from last weekend. Then prepare for what should be a fun game against the Buffs.

    Go Ducks.

Dickey's time will come. He was a fall camp arrival to the team and missed spring ball. Likely still has a lot of the playbook to master. A lot to learn about technique, routes, scheme, reading his defender and P5 level defenses in general.

And let's not forget blocking. In all of the non designated pass plays and much of the RPO offense, the WRs are called upon to be physical and make good blocks. It's not something that HS receivers usually have to do against elite competition and it's not learned overnight. No block, no rock.

There are several very good to elite receivers ahead of him on the depth chart. He is a remarkably gifted athlete and if the quality and skill above him on the roster wasn't there, he'd be playing. It's a luxury for Oregon to be able to bring him along slowly.

Maybe he redshirts this year. Lanning has mentioned Dickey's important role on the scout team. I'm trusting the coaching staff to give him enough work to keep him out of the portal and develop him into an elite weapon for the future.

Interesting point about the Penalties was when Lanning mentioned that the TT Defensive calls were similar to the Ducks Offensive calls.  That might account for a lot of the O-Line problems.

That was my read after hearing DL talk post game. Conerly jumped 3 times and JPJ whiffed on one snap. Intentional on TT's part to disrupt the timing of the snap count. About as hostile an environment as the O-line will face so it will prepare them for what's to come at UW and Utah.

It felt the same after the Wazzu game last year to me. We all saw what that team turned into before the UW and OSU debacles with a wounded Bo. I think this team has more talent and just needs to draw lessons from this game to correct what didn't go well. I'm optimistic that will happen.

Lubbock is a tough environment and Tech played hard. But Oregon came out unfocused.

    Conerly with 3 false starts.

Hats off to TT and their fan base. They played determined and angry.

As bad as the D played at times. As much as they extended TT drives with bad penalties. The D came up with some huge plays. 4 sacks, 3 int and 2 forced fumbles. One being a strip sack and one a pick 6 to seal the victory.

The O line has some work to do. Ducks bread and butter is the run game. O line struggled to open running lanes.

I condensed down what LogH noted and feel they are great points to make. There are plenty of things that need to be corrected. TT played a pretty good game on both sides of the ball and Oregon's mishaps were equally on offense and defense.

I'm hesitant to single out Lupoi for criticism. I saw more good D alignments than bad ones and aside from a resurgence of some tackling issues and LBs being out of position on at least two of Shough's scampers, the defense held it's own and arguably won the game.

No one is calling out ATerry for the sloppy stuff on the O-line, but it's not surprising that this game exposed some growing pains for that group. Hostile environment, heat, mental errors, receivers with a bit of a case of the dropsies. All reasons why the offense underperformed.

I'll bet a lot gets corrected in practice this week.

  5. Yup. Time to honor some of the other sports to get the Autzen crowd in a frenzy. First, certainly a collage of past Oregon football players that switches images to their pro teams: Justin, Jevon, Penei, Deommodore, Ugo, Noah, VM3, etc..

And for heaven sake, get some footage of PP3 and others like Brooks and Duarte. Then Sabrina, Ruthy and Satou crushing Stanford the year Oregon WOULD have won the national championship.

Charles, in short, bingo! PSU had no alternative but to get the ball out of the QB's hand in under 3 sec or he was going to be on the ground. They were 8 of 20 on pass plays and threw for 52 yds. Ultimately they pretty much abandoned the pass.

All of the mental and positional breakdowns were on that one series. DL and Lupoi corrected things right away and the PSU offense was shut down the rest of the game. So given the rapid throws, then minimal use of the passing game later, the 'sack lack' was expected.

Several of the D starters were not the personnel that we expected to see and may not have been the majority of the 'ones' on the depth chart. They got taken advantage of for a single series. Concerning, but not doom and gloom. It was rapidly fixed by the coaches.

A much bigger test will be tomorrow against Texas Tech and I agree with posters here that the tougher competition will make the rapid pass/first or quick second read for Shough an issue for Oregon. Fortunately, TT's ground game is not great and will work in the Ducks favor.

Oregon will give up some points but if they limit the damage through the air, the defense will have done it's job given that the Duck offense will be hard to stop.

And hooter on the field. 98 in Fort Worth last Saturday for CU/TCU and 106 on the field. And Hunter played 129 snaps?

As if 97° on the field isn't enough, the Ducks will have to deal with the distraction of hooters. I understand they really like that stuff in Texas, though.

  8. Living in Troy's head rent free. And good luck planting that silly sword in the Autzen Field Turf. Maybe the Trojan can use it like a combination polo stick and shish kabob, plucking Traveler's road apples up off the endzone turf each time Oregon scores.

  9. Still a bit early to say but Stein seems to be turning out to be a good, possibly great hire. Even though he didn't start much at Louisville, playing behind Teddy Bridgewater, when he played he had a high QBR. He stuck on at Louisville to coach and that wouldn't have happened if he didn’t know his stuff.

He has been better than good at each subsequent coaching gig and he appears to be a QB whisperer if recruiting and Thompson's improvement have anything to do with him. Exciting to think what this offense can do when he takes the muzzle off and opens up the playbook.

Wyoming gave the TexTech D fits in that 2nd half and OT. Think what Bo, Bucky, Troy and TFerg could do behind the revamped O-line when Stein looses the hounds.

No.  If Oregon and USC go into the B1G and score sixty points, it's because your team got tougher up front. You see when you switch out the PAC sticker for the B1G one, you automatically become tougher. Never question the patch power.

Also you must forget that 2021 game ever happened. Ohio State players all had the flu that day.

Their D coordinator had the flu, combined with pleurisy, lumbago, scabies, dropsy, bubonic plague and the seven year itch that day. It was contagious and the entire tOSU team was afflicted. Certainly wasn't that they were outplayed by the Ducks.

That game and the Rose Bowl were the two shining moments in the Cristobal firmament.

  11. Also not a Prime fan but have to admire the job he and his son did against TCU. Wouldn't mind Colorado being ranked when they come to Autzen now that TexTech is out of the top 25 and a Duck win next Saturday won't hold as much weight.

My guess is that Prime stays at Colorado to coach his sons, then it's adios to SEC land.

    Misspell

While I would agree that the road OT loss might make TT more determined against the Ducks, two factors give Oregon a small but real advantage.

DL and staff have more and better film to study. TT was likely forced to use more playbook to try and pull out a win in Laramie. Perhaps of greater importance is that OT offense and defense is all red zone, and could tip their hand to how they would play in the toughest part of the field.

Historically teams are impacted by OT games. The impact on the following game is greatest when you lose, particularly on the road. While teams that subsequently play at home still have a relative advantage straight up, they do poorly against the spread. Again, small but real potential advantage Oregon.

Five observations, even given the weak opponent:

D-line solid with addition of Burch to take pressure off Dorlus.

Secondary still has tackling issues that need to be addressed.

O-line is the real deal led by JPJ with Cornelius and Conerly at the tackles

Insane group of WRs led by TFrank

    Dilly who?

I should note those were 1st half observations. DBs tackling better now

    Utes have an outstanding punter.

I believe he is an Aussie like Dunne.

    Good on ya, Mate!

Florida looked sluggish and a bit out of shape. Maybe the altitude in spite of everyone having a personal oxygen cylinder. Ute D is solid and disciplined. How many sacks they get, like six?

Biggest concern for Utah is how their offense petered out in the second half. They'll be better once they get Rising and Kuithe back. It'll be a great game in Rice-Eccles against the Ducks.

  15. Jon, Duckhart is right. Oregon faced Williams and Oklahoma in the 2021 Alamo Bowl. He threw for 242 yds and 3 TDs. Cristobal had given Oregon the big middle finger on his way to Miami and acting HC Joe Moorhead finally opened up the offense and let A. Brown chuck the ball down the field. Too little too late, though.

So, yeah, the Ducks have seen Williams before. Beating him, 'Check Out My Crib' Riley and the entitled Spoiled Children at Autzen would be sweet. And here's to being a thorn in U$C's side for years to come in the B1G.

  16. Excellent observations in the article, Alex. Avoiding injuries and a step up in defensive efficiency make every game in 2023 winnable.

As far as USC goes, what I saw in their win over SJ State was that in spite of better personnel, their defense is still very vulnerable to a good rushing attack and a mobile QB. Oregon checks both of those boxes.

Williams is dynamic with a big accurate arm but could be lulled into throwing picks against better competition. The Spartan coverage was very soft and he found wide open gaps most of the time but took some chances with the ball that Oregon can exploit if DB and safety play is solid.

And Zachariah Branch is the real deal. The announcers gushed on him and crowned him the 2nd coming of Reggie Bush. He reminds me more of DAT as he goes down easy once corralled, but you've got to catch him first. Lanning and crew now have a heads up that he needs to be game planned for.

    Time for some football!
