Our Oregon Ducks football program might have missed out on Preston Taumua this weekend, but they still remain the top choice for future superstar tailback Nate Frazier. Coming out of Mater Dei in Santa Ana, CA, Frazier is a true offensive X-factor that could take over the PAC-12 fast. While the entire country is passing game-centric now, it’s never a bad idea ...

Unfortunately, Frazier isn't coming here unless UGA or Bama no longer want him. Last I heard, he's UGA or Bama. Not to be a downer, but that's the reason we took Riggs. RB isn't really a need in this cycle with James and Dowdell waiting in the wings.

Back to my head-versus-my-heart issue when it comes to Our Beloved DucksMy head says, 10-2, but my heart believes in a slight improvement to the offense to 40 points per game, and a BIG improvement on the defense.  My heart says that although the games against USC, Utah, Washington and Oregon State are going to be tough....this older, savvy Oregon squad can do it!

    12-0 Baby!

This is not crazy. UW and Utah are woefully overrated. Beavs' lost the players that made that defense solid...Assuming Nix stays healthy, are floor should be 11-1 but think we'll be 12-0.

After considering all the information I could find on Stanford, (including Joey Mac's Duck Insider show today where he interviewed Stanford's John Platz) I think the one area a depleted Tree team could attack Oregon's defense is their passing game to their WR's.  They have size at the receiver position, bigger than what Oregon can match with our shorter (albeit quicker) DB's.

Only Trikweze Bridges has anywhere near the height and wingspan of the Stanford receivers and even then he gives up 2 inches or more.  Gonzalez gives up 3" and other O DB's 4" or more.

The so-called 50-50 balls where the QB throws the ball high and to the outside shoulder making the catch one of a jump ball situation has worked very well for Stanford over the years.

Here is where Lanning/Lupoi's Cover 2 defense (designed to limit the deep passes and keep everything in front of them) can be attacked, especially if/when Stanford gets near the red zone.

Stanford did give up 8 sacks to Washington.  Oregon needs to see if they can do the same and keep their QB scrambling for his life and not steady in the pocket. I'm not original in thinking this.  This is Platz's feeling on how the Tree can find success against the Ducks.

Basic offense down to 2 scholly RB's, Both starting Tackles are injured and they have a terrible and undersized DL. I'd think we tee off with 5-7 sacks and render them impotent. Don't see Stanford scoring more than 17 and we should go off as they'll have to go cover 1 to deal with the run game. At that point, we'll torch them with the deep ball. Don't be surprised if the score gets out of hand. This is the worst Stanford team I've seen and McKee shouldn't be the QB in a slow mesh scheme, especially without his 2 starting tackles.

I am hoping for a UCLA win tomorrow.
Washington dodges both USC and Utah.

UCLA and Oregon in my opinion, are the only two teams on their schedule who I “think” can beat them.

I already hoped for a USC win over Oregon State to better Oregon’s playoff hopes.

Now I Think I will hope for a UCLA win to give Washington their first loss.

We can give them their second.  I don’t want a 1 loss husky team at seasons end.

I cannot remember a single situation, until now, when I wanted USC and UCLA to win.

    Everything is changing.

Guess I'm different but would like to see it close, and have them to have as few of losses as possible until we play them..and..of course...crush them. Those Husky tears are sweeter when they think they're good. Also, I'd be surprised if they don't drop another 1 to OSU or WSU.  Both of them are better than UCLA based upon what we've seen so far. Also, UCLA is down to 3 scholly DT's which doesn't bode well for them this week.

  5. Sala and Bassa are playing really well right now. Unless we're blowing someone out, doesn't really make sense to rotate him in. Conerly isn't quite at their level physically or technique-wise but is getting closer from what I've heard. Last I heard is that he was around 310-315lbs.

100% on keeping him engaged. That is totally the right play vs. how MC utilized Kingsley. I'd guess he'll see PT against Stanford, Colorado, AZ and possibly UCLA. to get him ready for 23'.

We keep Jones for next season,  and Ope keeps improving, we should be set on the OL with Conerly, Harper, JPJ, Jones, Jaremillo with Ope popping in at RT and Iuli rotating at G positions. We need 1 or 2 more to step up but should foster a solid OL next season.

Thats another issue I have been thinking about. Bo's longest balls (in air)  haven't led his receivers. Nix would have a couple more touchdowns on the sheet if he could.

30-40 yards he is good. 50+ and the receiver is waiting around like the DMV.

So...I coached with Neil Lomax in a couple of camps. Shared a couple of key items. This is the biggest misnomer in football is big arm, see...Jeff George...Ryan Leaf...Jamarcus Russell, etc., etc.

Judgement, ability to quickly go through progressions/reads, release angle/time and Accuracy up to 40 yds is far more important than the +50 yd. throws.

Bo can make the opposite hash throw, etc. His arm is totally strong enough, the biggest problem with the deep ball is overthrowing the ball and not allowing receivers to adjust. Bo has trust in his receivers and doing just that. This requires quality receivers, trust, etc. but with our current personnel he can do this.

This is why the 50+yd throw isn't catching guys in stride and why he is making these throws successfully vs. incompletions...example- watch  Ty Thompsons deep, overthrown ball.

  7. 27 - 23 Ducks Win: - Wearing green shades!

Justification I'm basing this on the huge advantage we have in knowing their personnel and schemes. While ours is basically an enigma on offense, the spring game showed us nothing. Even defensively, we've now put Lannings scheme with Baylors scheme for tweaks, etc. It will take a half for Georgia to figure it out. If we're healthy and win the turnover battle , we win -

Also, Muschamp isn't Lanning and overrated. His best defense was a decade ago. He's had the same level of talent at other stops (Florida) and still never put together a defense as stout as Lanning.

30 - 17 Georgia Wins: - We lose the turnover battle and make too many mistakes.

Our boys make too many mistakes due to inexperience in the system and the talent pool, experience in the schemes and depth of Georgia is too much.

Haha I knew someone was going with that old saying... this isn't about confidence it's about development.

Last year it was AB who had 28 games experience, Bo has 34 games. The safe bet is to start those guys and it's a huge ask to expect the young QBs to beat them out for the job in fall camp when they have hardly any college game experience. Even if Ty was better some days than Bo, it's always safe to give the Vet the job.

Just because AB was the best QB at the end of fall camp didn't mean that if they went with Ty or Butters they wouldn't have improved during the season to the point they were better than AB. Matter of fact AB's play didn't get better as the year went, he was the same dude.

Bo if he is the starter isn't going to get a bunch better from game one to game six, or game 14. Bo is who he is for the most part, he's developed for three years.

Ty or Butter will improve each week if they play, and you can find out how good they can be as they improve.

If we don't play Ty or Butters this year and then Moore comes in, who is the next transfer we bring in next year with three years' experience? DJ Ulagalelei?

Lastly if Ty or Butters hardly play this year do you think they stay or hit the Portal?

If they stay and we bring in another transfer QB do you think they stick around then?

I agree with the premise of more PT for the backups just not the method you suggest. Last quarter, obvious leads, sure...but not without that.

It just doesn't work when you're shooting for 12-0. Maybe if you were a 6 win or less type of team with no shot I could get behind this but not sure it helps with confidence or retention for the next season when you pull a guy has one bad series but the two QB rotational method just doesn't work and is really only deployed by teams with little to no chance of winning and looking to gain experience for the next season.

Pulling a QB without a solid game winning lead for rotational experience,  isn't accounting for looks, bating and deception with coverage schemes that takes in-game reps to pick up on and truly see what's happening. Also there's a rhythm issue that a QB needs as it relates to timing with his receivers, etc.   Rotating QB's  just doesn't work and the reason you don't see national champions that do this.  What might work best is defined scenario's, e.g Florida & Tebo, etc. but in reality, I'd rather see 4-5 blowouts that utilize a rotation with both Butters and Ty.

So I have watched the Miami spring game highlights...

In short for those who are interested... the linemen are still being forced to block in the same way. The offense is basically the offense we saw last year but with more pistol. So not the worst Cristobal offense but still predictable and boring to watch.

What I find is more interesting was how soft the defense played with his FOURTH defensive coordinator. Its bend but don't break and it has a soft underbelly, in that there are lots of underneath throws that are easy because they aren't being pressured.

So... looks like Cristobal has wasted some of the best defensive talent Oregon has had as well.

Don't think you're wrong on this. Not a fan of the technique MC & the dwarf taught. It poses some challenges IMO against speedy shorter DL. Just think it poses too many challenges but to each their own. Ironically, MC's greatest skill...recruiting,..maps to his model of great talent can overcome crappy coaching and still win. Which inevitably, explains so many close wins for us during his tenure instead of mass blowouts.

There's little doubt that he'll pull them in 2024 but we're really struggling and had these guys 5-6 weeks and poof, they're all gone. Not sure if it's NIL, conference, etc. but that is literally the only position group still left out of this cycle. We get Moore tomorrow and likely one more and we'll be done at the edge and have wins at every other position on record. My guess is that we hit the portal but guess we'll just have to see.

Not sure how many passing attempts JB or TT have had against "real" competition. I do know it's very minimal. Doesn't mean that one of them isn't our best chance to win, probable that Nix gives Ducks best chance at being successful.

Fortunately for whomever starts, they won't be going up against the best D line in nation alone. Been hearing that the Duck O line could be one of the best in the country. That should be super helpful, ya think?

I want the guy who is going to trust the pocket, go through his progressions, and deliver the ball with accuracy. Minimize mistakes and lead this team. The guy who is going to stay cool under pressure. Thats not always Nix.

There are some absolute dudes in the Oregon WR room. It's their job to create separation. That should help. On top of that, Ducks have guys like Cota that can make difficult catches in traffic or poorly thrown balls. Oregon has some blue chippers who, I hope, can match UGA secondary.

College football is the ultimate team game. It takes all 11 and Oregon has some studs almost 2 deep across the board. Most talent Ducks have ever fielded.

So yea, if TT or JB are the best we can field, I want them going against UGA defensive line, linebackers and secondary. And I want them to win.

We can not afford a single mistake to win this game and as good as our D talent is this season, they still have to perform in a new scheme with no game experience in that scheme against arguably the best OL, RB & Receivers we'll see.  I would not want to throw a newbie into that game.

The leash of Bo depends on the ability of the underclassmen. I am not convinced Bo is day 1 starter. It's probable but I wouldn't be surprised if JB or TT win the job.

Not happening. Last thing you'll do is throw a couple of newbies out to start their 1st game against a top 3 team.  If that happens, we've likely already lost. No, if anything Bo will be a sacrificial lamb.

Unfortunately he's not that tall and doesn't move all that well so likely scheme limitations (if we only knew our scheme:)). He's limited. Basically 2 strikes against him. Unless he's grown taller I find this doubtful. He's strong but seriously overweight and slow.

Then my USC alum uncle will vent they got another three-star OL guy. UCS has been void of blue-chip OL guys for a while now.

USC is 100% getting him. We are flailing at OL recruiting and yet, Klemm, from all the internal chat, is supposedly our best or top 2 in recruiting skill amongst the staff...Plain weird!

  15. Totally agree that DeBoer is an elite offensive mind and good coach. There is some cause for concern with him at the helm in the future if he can fix his recruiting which is pretty abysmal currently. I imagine that will change based upon on field performance, scheme and time at a P5.

However, in terms of this season, they have significant issues on offense as they have arguably the worst stable of RB's in the conference and the OL isn't looking so great. The offense has been stymied by the defense in practice and quite frankly, that defense is a shell of itself. They have literally 1 guy in the front 7 worth a damn and  in the front 7 that's notable. Their DL is not going to be good and their ILB's are doogISHT. Losing their All Pac db's to the NFL isn't going to help.  They have serious personnel issues this season but an easy schedule and some of that wizardry should allow for them to get 7-8 wins or so but,...they are a bit of a hot mess based upon what I've heard.

It was ALL on Mario offensively and our DB's gave up at least two long TD passes.

ASU was schemed for our Pistol with the dink and dunk passes. We went up 7-0 in the first quarter and then ASU scored 24 unanswered points to be up 24-7 with around 9 minutes left in the game.

Then Mario decided we had to stop the stupid Pistol with the dink and dunk passing and we put up 21 points in the last 9 minutes of the game. One of the drives Herbs threw 3 passes for around 70 yards in less than a minute.

If Mario had unleashed Herbs from the start of the game the Ducks could have put Arizona away!

Chip would have had that game over by halftime! Herbs would have never been put in the situation to have to rally the team on his back at the end of the game.

Mario at least broke tendencies and ran Herbs against Utah and Wisconsin. You can't run a bland power run offense all year that doesn't take deep shots to stretch the defense and not end up with teams stacking the box on you.

Auburn did just that to the Ducks most of the second half and we played right into with runs and shallow 6-yard routes. When they stacked the box and cut how deep they set the safeties we should have gone over the top of the with the deep pass. Auburn wasn't playing anything deeper than 10 yards!

Mario never got the fundamentals of if the defense tries to take one thing away from you then they are giving up something else. When a defense stacks the box against your power run, and you don't attack them deep you're playing Stupid.

To be fair to MC, he was protecting Herbs until we got through the regular season. With BB backing him up we had zero chance of winning. At least that's how I read.

However, your point on stacking the box couldn't be more accurate..of course, we had limited talent at WR and not exactly the most advanced passing schemes. Regardless, Herbs threw dimes and we should have been able to scheme this into the game more consistently.

MC came at the right time and instilled discipline and disproved recruiting myths but was out of his depth when it came to the "chess of football" at this level. I'd guess he repeats the same mistakes at UM but we'll see.

  18. When looking at depth and scheme this is 100%. We never really had that fully stocked front seven cupboard even in 2010 - 2012 when we were a damn good defense.   Of course, having a S & C coach that doesn't just focus on just gaining weight and strength "only" should help. With Feld, I'd virtually guarantee injuries would still destroy us at certain positions. These guys get supportive tissue development, etc. which will hopefully minimize this.

When it comes to scheme, the other side of the story is that like most, we're in Nickle (the star) running a 4-2-5 scheme as our base so realistically we're really 3 deep at the edge which is a huge plus. Granted, we'll run multiple schemes personnel-wise so when they want to get both DJ and Swinson it will really be a 2-4-5 against pass heavy schemes but nice to have that flexibility.

  19. This article is too true although, I think the finish will come in 2-3 years. Right now if he notches 1 more win that Manny, they'll give him rope. However, when he's expected to wipe the field with the talent they've landed and the drop games due to his "corching". Well, the knives will certainly come out but yeah, he'll get that this year for sure.

  21. - No offense is successful if the running game sucks and OL is awful. They were flat out terrible against teams like Georgia, Bama etc. where the kid was pressured on literally almost 50% of his passes.

    - Not many QB's are great running for their life, throwing off platform in that offense against man.

    - Promoting Chad Morris as some sort of savant that could only fail if his QB stunk isn't accurate at all. He failed at Arkansas, wasn't the OC at Clemson when they won the natty and currently an analyst at USF so not exactly seen as OC savant by his peers. No, using that as the justifiable component isn't really determinative of how Bo will fair.

It may very well be the case, however, we have a strategic advantage that Georgia doesn't. In particular, they have extremely limited knowledge of our offensive scheme, down/distance tendencies, etc. They know Lannings defense but, then Lanning knows their defense and personnel. From a strategy, tactics perspective, there's some challenges we pose that they don't. Personnel wise, we're a bit fubar'd so we need some help from the football gods but it's possible.

You can at least justify Black as it's on helmets been on the numbers, etc. Gray, besides being drab, is arguably our achilles heel as it seems we lose a signficant portion of our games in those. Never, ever want to see gray!

  24. There are zero meaningful portal transfers who've left us. These are all process based guys who were either a cancer, have permanent injuries that would impair their ability to play effectively, etc. The OL guys that left were all 3rd string and not going to get better than emergency playing status. Most of these guys had chronic injuries to their shoulders, etc. and quite frankly shouldn't have been offered. They were offered because of stars, their medical's weren't good.
