Not just Dallas where the size of a media market is more important than a team's brand.
The B12 newbies average football game viewers in 2022:
38. BYU - 997K - BYU with the LDS affiliation has a national audience. Not of course, on the level of Notre Dame which ranks 6. with 3.3M viewers a game but only behind Pac-10 teams 12. Oregon - 2.21M, Utah - 1.16M, 34. UW - 1.15M. WA St is close at 41. and 907K.
55. Cincinnati - 653K - Cincinnati is approximately the same market size as Columbus. Ohio State is #1 with an average of 5.8M viewers.
61. UCF - 510K - Not that far behind 59. Miami - 608K and the Orlando market is now larger than the Miami market. With the B12 membership, I expect UCF to close the gap with Miami.
78. Houston - 242K. Houston, like SMU in Dallas, does not punch its weight in the Houston media market.
Potential Pac-10 add-ons - 71. SMU - 312K, 85 - San Diego State - 198K
Brands trump market size all across the country.
BYU's past viewing ranks were only due to those games with G5's that dragged our numbers down. When we played P5's, our numbers were much higher. For example our late night game vs Baylor was the highest in that time slot since 2016 at 2.2mm.

I think much of that has to do with the bursting media rights bubble. Networks are cutting costs and now people realize that programs are at risk of decreased exposure which effects other things.
-
Not at all, Oregon will be fine regardless, because they'll have a good landing spot one way or another. And I'm not trolling, just pointing out why a media deal is crucial to a conference and its programs.

Yeah this wasn't surprising to anyone who seems to be in the loop.
The media deal is fascinating aspect of sports fandom these days. I mean honestly... Did anyone care about what happened a decade ago with these media deals? No.
But now fans are clamoring to know what's in the pac-12 media deal. How much will it be? Does it come with expansion? And everything we have discussed to no end.
But from a business standpoint... They are on their own time table, one not dictated by what the fans want.
There will be a deal. We'll find out at some point before the current one expires.
I know I say all of this knowing full well I have participated in countless conversations about this topic. More than anything else I just want to point out this strange obession we have right now with the back room dealings of something as mundane as determining what channel or service games will play on.
This is something just so strange.
It's a big deal because a conference/program's exposure is on the line. Exposure is the lifeblood of a program. It's the reason Oregon has thrived the past 2+ decades and was a boost to our program.

I live in the Dallas area and pretty much nobody follows SMU here. That death penalty in the 80s really did a number on their program.

It is amazing the amount of mistakes the conference has made in the last 13 years. I saw this timeline on social media. The conference had so many opportunities to take advantage and stay relevant. Any of these moves probably would have saved the conference.
Jan 2010: The Conference of Champions, highly respected and in a position of power announces the formation of expansion committee
Sept 2010: Narrowly miss on signing TX, OU, TX Tech, OK St, and A&M when A&M backs out at the 11th hour
Sept 2011: Decline to accept TX into the Pac-12 due to LHNSept 2011: Reject OU & OK State's application for admission w/o TX
Aug 2021: Decline to extend invitations to TCU, Baylor, & TX Tech after the schools asked for a lifeline.
June 2022: USC & UCLA announce they're leaving the Pac-12 and the conference is blindsided.
Feb 2023: Dragging their feet but needing to invite G5s San Diego St & SMU to keep the conference alive for a few more years.
Turning their noses up at (and snubbing) BYU didn't help either.

#8 is about as good as a scenario as could have been hoped for. Gives plenty of time to rise 4 spots should things shake up enough in the coming weeks.

I think much of it will come down to whether the P12 does equal or unequal shares of the revenue. If UO and UW each take a much bigger slice of the pie in a tiered system, then the four corner schools will be making much less and will have every incentive to either 1. not sign a GOR with the P12 or 2. bolt for the B12. Never discount the value of exposure. Sure, revenue is great to hang your hat on, but thinking long term, exposure is how you build your brand and value and is every bit as important (if not more important than) revenue.

For that kind of money the Ducks should maybe head to the BIG......Now.......
A few months back, ESPN valued the PAC 10 media rights at $300 million annually. Thats $30 mil, per season each school. Now remember, ESPN bases that figure on number of TV's.
So a potential deal with Amazon, who needs sports content for 165 million USA Prime subscribers is only worth about $3-$4 million a year, per school. Something doesnt add up! Especially if Amazon wants and needs the PAC Network. A network with broadcast equipment, staffing for broadcasts, announcers, studio abnouncers and 12 years of broadcast history. WTH.....
Now only a fraction of the 165 million subscribers will watch the PAC games. But still the price seems very low.
Also the PAC has 3 National Brands. Oregon, and to a lesser degree, washington and Utah. Please, anyone on the Forum, tell me what existing or incoming schools in the BIG 12 has a bigger national brand that those 3 PAC teams.
BYU has a bigger brand then Utah (and a much bigger and national fanbase), Utah's fanbase is mostly around SLC, so its fairly regional. One could argue we have as big or bigger (or shall I say, more national of) a brand then UW given the national reach and spread of the sponsoring institution. And when it comes to Oregon, one can argue that lately Oregon has the bigger brand, but historically might be a different matter, so it may be a tossup. Oregon draws viewers, but all three of those schools fanbases are mostly regional.

I arrived in Eugene yesterday and I absolutely love it here. What a great town! Anyways I just wanted to wish y'all a good, fun, injury-free game and a good. fun, safe afternoon, regardless of the result of the game (please wish me the same, I'm having to triple my dosage of Prozac for this game, lol)!
I'll be at Rennies Landing this morning if any of y'all want to join me?

I am curious about the state of mind of BYU fans have towards joining the Big 12. If the Pac 12 invited BYU to join and a yearly rivalry game with Utah could be had, would they prefer that? Do they enjoy conference independence and are disappointed about joining any conference?
I'd really like to hear the thoughts of BYU fans on this.
To be honest, we are very excited to be joining the Big 12, though geographically we fit in better with the Pac 12. We feel it will be a better fit for us then the Pac 12. Independence was a fun experiment and its neat that our last season of independence is also has our best schedule but we are excited about moving on to a P5 conference after decades of waiting.

This, except for U$C and fUCLA. I'm rooting for every OOC opponent and PAC team to beat them for the next two years. And we (Utah fans) will root for anyone that has a shot at beating BYU.
@BYUTexan, not sure it's been a friendly rivalry for more years than that.
It was between LaVell Edwards and Ron McBride, then Urban Meyer turned it toxic.

I'm not sure I know of a rivalry with as much hatred between two fanbases as between Utah and BYU.
There are deeper aspects than just football at play with this rivalry.
And you can thank Urban Meyer for starting all of that. It used to be a friendly rivalry.

Probably best to leave out the reference. I love everything about Utah, no exceptions, but there is an attitude around BYU much like sc, all I will say.
I can understand the discernment. We can be a bit cocky, if not arrogant at times.

I've lived in Utah, BYU isn't love by all, much like Notre Dame. There is an extreme loyal following, but it doesn't extend statewide, that is for sure. Great state, by the way.
BYU has a sc type of flavor, we are just better than you, definitely want to win this weekend.
It extends statewide and is spread throughout the country through the Utah culture. (Am I allowed to say that here?)

I think this game is going to be just as tough a test for us as Baylor was, but in different ways. While I know we can match Oregon's physicality, y'alls speed and scheme are going to prove a challenge and a tall order. I'm also worried about an emotional let down after the emotional roller coaster we went through with the 2 OT game against Baylor on Saturday night and thinking that we took too long celebrating the win in our minds before moving onto Oregon. Here's hoping to a great game and that my BYU cougars won't choke or not show up on Saturday.
Either way, it's a win/win for me. Either my cougars win or my late father's ducks win.

That was So. Florida, tho, right? Oregon should offer stiffer resistance. Still, a win in Florida this time of the year is impressive. We'll see...
Yes and yes, Oregon will be a much, much tougher test then USF.

One thing to keep in mind about Baylor is that they had (according to Phil Steele) the #7 offensive line and #4 defensive line units. Baylor is a tough, physical, well-coached team that really attacks the line of scrimmage.

Bowl Game! What Opponent Do YOU Want to See?

I feel for ducks fans here. Liberty? Talk about a no-win situation. However, that does beat not going to a bowl game.
