I know this all been talked about and maybe I am naive, but what about merging the best of the Big12/Pac12 and create a partnership with The ACC?  Bring together the strongest partnership possible to try and create a strong conference.

Like you said, bid out to the likes of Amazon, Apple CBS, NBC, etc. along with ESPN and or Fox.  Try to generate the best possible highest media rights.

I think the 3 conferences need to come together to stop the bleeding and forge the best possible scenario. There are good teams with good media markets that could work with a newly forged partnership.

I totally agree. I think that the PAC, Big 12,  and ACC have to put aside any pride or homerism so that we can put together a conference that will be viable and competitive for the long term future.

I think if we all stick to our own conferences now we are only delaying the inevitable, which will be another big shake up and may result in the conferences joining up anyway, only in a more desperate attempt in 5 or 10 years.

I wholeheartedly agree with that! I went to school in Tulsa (Spartan College of Aeronautics) and caught all of the HATE Sooner nation could muster after beating them in large part to two very controversial calls (2006). Of course I still rocked all of my Ducks gear, but I paid for it in snide remarks and scowling sideways glances.  Given the arrogance of their fans, I was grateful for all of it.  I always found it odd though that there was only one OKST bar in Brookside that I remember, I thought you all would have had a bigger footprint in the area...

Ohhh man haha.  They were SO pissed about that.  I heard a bunch of them moaning about that call just last year when you guys played them!  I'll bet they did let you have it.  They are LITERALLY the sorest losers I've ever been around.  I'll say at least one of those calls was pretty bad, but good grief...it happens!  I can tell you this, they've been on the opposite side of that sort of thing way more than most.

For instance we had them all but beat in the 1983 version of Bedlam.  Up 20-18 with two minutes left in the game and the sooners were kicking off to us.  After the game Barry Switzer would admit that he decided to not go for the onside kick.  However there was miscommunication and the kicker thought he was still kicking the onside kick.  So the sooners line up in a normal formation but the kicker mishits the kick which was a line drive knuckle ball that his Oklahoma State player Chris Rockins right in the side of the helmet.  The sooners recovered, marched down the field and kicked the game winning field goal. They don't call it Sooner Magic for nothin!

All that to say...they can't complain haha.

I know it wasn't intentional but I take serious offense to you saying the Huskies carry themselves with class and are competitive on the field. If we end up in some sort of merger/alliance, you'll soon learn that neither of those things are true...

Haha!  Well I'll say I was speaking more to the university and program...not to the fans themselves haha.  I can say that OU is a good school with a good program...but their fans are in large part GOD AWFUL.

I'm just not convinced that many Big-12 schools would actually want to join. I'm not opposed to grabbing the big remaining schools left in the big-12 but I'm not sure they'd want to.

Also I'm not sure how us Ducks and the Beavers would feel about being in a league with schools with either similar colors or the same colors as us. Oklahoma State and Oregon State are both black and orange.

And we'll Baylor is dark green and gold .. Oregon is green and yellow (certainly not gold)

Well, I can't speak for all schools in the Big12 but I can say that most of the Oklahoma State fan base would be excited to be in the same league with Oregon and Washington.  Is that our ideal?  No, but not because of anything against Oregon or Washington.  The ideal was the "old" Big12.  Unfortunately the University of Texas wrecked that ship (and then bailed after seeing what they had done).  That said, the Ducks and Huskies are incredible programs that have carried themselves with class and are very competitive on the field.

There are many PAC schools who are great universities and have a TON of potential to be really attractive (the Arizona schools come to mind) but as of right now have really puny viewership numbers and what seems like pretty poor fan support.

I think must folks here are just shell shocked by the sudden departure news and are just throwing out different options to get a sense of which direction the Ducks should go in. I don't think anyone is disrespecting the Big 12. The appeal of SDSU is more about having a footprint in the So Cal TV market which has been the UO's recruiting hotbed up to this point. Since most feel that USC and UCLA's prime motivation for leaving the Pac was to shut out the Ducks from dominating recruiting in LA, a top priority people are feeling is to figure out how to get back in there while staying nationally relevant.

If we become conference mates in the near future, I'm sure the fan base will embrace it. Right now, I think most of us are kind of feeling like we just got dumped on prom night.

Hey you are preaching to the proverbial choir on the shell shocked feeling!  Last summer the sky was LITERALLY falling for us.  As the days and weeks went by though it became apparent that one way or another Oklahoma State was going to be alright (thank you Boone Pickens and Mike Gundy!) because of the work done the previous 15 years.  And that's why I can say with a high level of confidence that one way or another Oregon is going to be okay when all the dust settles.

You know I had not thought about USC/UCLA adding the prevention of Oregon coming along as a stipulation to joining the BIG10.  That makes some sense in terms of how it would help them in recruiting...and that REALLY sucks.  That's a very...Texas Longhorns thing to do.

Thanks for joining us, OST8. I am leaning towards what I would term a merger with the Big 12.

    In addition to revenue, my concerns with this are two: 1) respecting the lives of student-athletes in all sports, which means not imposing travel schedules on them appropriate only for pro athletes;

    2) bringing into the new league or organization our long-time rivals and partners: WSU, Cal and our local OSU.

    Some issues I foresee:
    1) What to do with UCF and West Virgina, which are quite distant from Eugene, Oregon;

    2) What to do about the total number, which would be 22 I believe if everyone now or soon to be affiliated with each league remained.

Others no doubt know the revenue numbers better, but that is what I want.

I am very much open to persuasion at this point, not that Messieurs Kliavkoff and Mullen are likely to consult me.

I think those are VERY legit concerns.  Here are my two pennies.

    1) I have thought many times during all this conference realignment that literally none of these decisions are being made with the student athletes in mind.  It's 100% a money grab/arms race...and it's ugly to be honest.  In fact I'll say that this ENTIRE CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT can be traced back to the greed and power of one school.  But that's a LONG story.  I hate the distant travel that many conferences are facing.

    2) I think the only team that the Big12 would maybe balk at is Oregon State...only because their numbers are so bad and their stadium is so small.  Honestly both their stadium and TV viewership compare more closely with Big West or Sun Belt conference numbers than they do PAC or Big12 numbers.  That said I truly applaud a fan base that actually cares about their instate rival (even if not on game day ha) enough to want to stand up for them.  Maybe you guys should get on the phone with the Sooners and talk some sense into them!

If it were up to me I'd drop two or more of the incoming schools (UCF, BYU, Cincy, Houston) so that we could take Oregon St, WSU, and Cal if that's what it took to get the Ducks and Huskies to come along.

Probably the biggest thing that will have to happen with any sort of expansion or just new media rights is there will need to be a change in how funds are distributed.

If the PAC is to stay together then it is not sustainable or fair for Oregon to have an equal cut with others. It is time Oregon gets the cut it deserves for holding the conference up.

Then lesser partners will get a smaller cut because that is just the way it would have to be. It would be super unpopular across the conference but these days your conference is only as good as the teams that bring in the money and I'm sorry to say it... But Oregon brings a whole lote more money than Oregon state.

Id Fresno state and San Diego state want to join then they get a smaller cut... Which would still be a whole lot bigger than what they get from the mountain west right now.

I'm a little surprised at the idea that you guys would rather pick up some big west teams than to be in a league with some of the Big 12 schools that pull equal to or near the TV viewership that the Ducks and Huskies do. How big are the SDSU and SJSU stadiums?

Hell, I don't care what we call the conference. It can stay the PAC. I just think the most financial and competitive benefit would come from some sort of PAC/Big 12 (and eventually ACC) conference.

  6. I think if something happens with the ACC this year or next then you are correct and Clemson/FSU/Miami/UNC would immediately go to the powerhouse conferences.  I actually think if the ACC rides out it's current GOR and those schools get to see what happens to the Trojans, Sooners, Longhorns, Bruins (or Auburn, Penn St, etc) when they are thrown into the absolute gauntlet that those conferences will be, I really think they will be much more inclined to form a 3rd power conference.

At first, I thought that joining the B1G (or SEC) was a must but after reading more posts on OBD and other forums, I’m not sure that that is the way to go if Oregon’s long-term goal is to win a national championship in football.

As Duck 1972 pointed out, top teams who have joined the Big-10, SEC, Pac-12 and other conferences have not had much success (e.g., Nebraska, Colorado, Texas A&M, Penn State).  USC has not been good since Pete Carroll left.  They get more money by joining the B1G but traded Oregon for Ohio State.  Does anyone think that USC’s road to the playoffs got easier?

My new ranking for Oregon would be:

1      Try to form a 3rd super conference with the top programs of the ACC, Big-12 and Pac-10.  Some combination of Clemson, Florida State, Miami, NC, Duke, VT, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Oregon, Washington, Cal, Stanford, Arizona, etc.  We could approach the ACC's existing TV partner to see if they would work with us.

2    Create a real alliance/merger with the ACC.  We could keep the existing Pac-10 intact and look to add a few teams. The winner of the ACC could play the winner of the Pac for the championship of the combined league.  This game could rival the B1G or SEC's championship game (e.g., Clemson vs. Oregon) and position the winner for an automatic bid into the college football playoffs.

3    Join the B1G.  If you believe that super conferences are inevitable this option would be on top of the list, assuming you cannot make #1 happen.  However, the existing playoff system would need to change. For example, the winner of the B1G play the winner of the SEC for the national championship.

4    Look to expand the Pac-10 and/or look to merge with the Big-12.  This and the ACC option above would likely be temporary options until the B1G and SEC are ready to expand to 20+ teams.

5   Go independent.  I think that this will be harder going forward with the super conferences, as the top teams will not want to schedule an Oregon in addition to their grueling conference schedule.

THIS.  I feel the same way about Oklahoma State's situation.  If a PAC/Big12/ACC combo could happen to form a 3rd mega-conference I really feel that would be the best route.  And truthfully, in terms of on the field competition, that conference would be very very good.  But if you continue to add all of the top programs to two different conferences that only two teams can come out at the top you're just...limiting yourself in a way.

I don't know if the 3rd super conference would pull a TV deal as big as the BIG or SEC's contract but I actually do think it would be fairly close.

I think this is a worst case scenario and only an option if the B1G doesn't take Oregon.  This deal would be to salvage money lost with USC/UCLA leaving whereas joining the B1G should be an increase in revenue annually.  Oregon needs to go to the B1G or SEC (not likely) to remain top tier.  Anything else ends the dream of a natty.

Oregon would suddenly becomes a stepping stone program for DL and any other coaches on his staff and recruiting will take a major hit almost immediately.

The way I've thought about this possibility is it's about survival. Staying, at least, moderately relevant and having access to the playoffs.

Even if it's until 2036 when the ACC GOR ends at which point there would be another reshuffle either to the BIG and SEC or the cream of the crop from the PAC/Big12 and ACC forming a 3rd mega conference.

Until then this may be the best option.

Brand value.  If you were to as an independent firm to place a monetary value on any of the remaining PAC and BXII football brands, I think Oregon comes out ahead by a bit.

Oregon has invested a ton along these lines for decades.

Oregon and UW are screwed due to geography.  So long as realignment is a function of the entirety of a school’s sports media rights, the west coast is doomed.  There aren’t enough strong football brands that warrant a conference creating insane logistics

The SEC can grow to 20+ w/out growing its geographic footprint.

Oregon and UW are looking at being left for dead and not being able to do a thing about it.

The BXII could be flat out cold blooded and strand those programs and they would very very quickly become irrelevant

If I were PK, I would write a $750MM check to the B1G to ensure Oregon FB is included ($40MM/year to help offset dilution of new media deal) until the ACC unlocks.

Once the ACC comes open and if Oregon can stay a huge brand until then, the danger will have passed.

USC et alia are trying to kill Oregon now.  This, IMHO, is existential

I agree with the brand value.  I feel like you guys were about a decade ahead of us in the "re-birth" of your program (new stadium, biggest Nike uniform deal behind you guys, etc) and that we really did use the Duck model to put a new brand on our program and it has largely worked.  Again we're just a decade behind and in fly-over country.

Whether it's with the BIG10 or with a re-worked PAC12 you guys will be okay.  I do think, one way or another, we will end up with a 3rd megaconference that will include some of the PAC/Big12/ACC schools.  Not sure exactly when or how that will look but I think it's inevitable.

USC and UCLA aren’t members yet so they lack veto power.

Your comments around rich alumni being an issue sort of falls apart when you think of your school and tOSU.

I think you are losing the plot a little.  This is now about brands.  Oregon is a massive draw and a natural rival to SC given resources commitment and fan loyalty.

Why would you toss Oregon over the side?  It isn’t the equivalent of Texas Tech or Oklahoma State

In reference to your comment that Oregon isn't the equivalent of TTech or Oklahoma State...I actually don't disagree with you, I just don't understand why that's the case.

The reason it feels confusing is that all I ever hear about in this whole conference realignment circus is that it's driven by football TV money which is all tied in with how many eyeballs do each school draw when they are on TV.

IF that's the case from 2015-2019 Oklahoma State ranked 19th in the country in terms of TV ratings with Oregon at 26th and TTech at 38th. And yet, I'm with you in terms of just...sensing that Oregon is more "valuable" than Oak State. I just don't understand why. Is it the perceived ceiling of each school? Is it academics? Oklahoma State is an R1 research university (next step up is AAU), so while it's no Stanford it's considered very solid academically (on paper anyways).

    What are your thoughts there?

That might be the best way for all to survive if we cannot be in the B1G, and I love the graphic.  And do chime in when you have thoughts, as we invite reasonable fans from all schools.  WELCOME!

    (BTW...always loved your offense!)

I appreciate the welcome!  I too have really enjoyed the Ducks offense over the years.  As I recall that offense rolled right over us back in 2008 or 2009 haha.  I hate that the desire for money has overcome the love of tradition in college football but that is where we find ourselves.  Again I think both our programs will be okay in the end.

  12. Greetings.  An Oklahoma State fan here to see what the temperature was out west.  We've been living this craziness for the last year.  It's not good for the blood pressure, the emotions, or the soul for that matter.  Fairly sure I've cycled through the stages of grief 2 or 3 times haha.

I don't think schools like UO or UW or Oklahoma St or Baylor really need to worry....in the long run anyways.  As I do think eventually the top 64 schools or so will eventually be in a new situation.  It's all about eyeballs on TVs and both the Ducks and Cowboys move the needle there.  (See link below for some interesting look at the numbers)

    Average TV Ratings 2015-2019

It's schools like Oregon St and Kansas that need to be concerned.  Although KU's bball program will likely save it's backside.

Just to lighten the mood.  My home message board orangepower.com decided the Big12 and Pac12 should mesh and call it the Biggie Pac with (naturally) the Pac schools being the west schools and the Biggie schools being the eastern most schools.  Somebody even made a graphic to go with it.  Made me lol.

My advice...just take deep breaths!  It's likely this rollercoaster isn't finished ha. With pockets like Phil Knight's and the solid TV numbers/performance UO has you guys will absolutely land on your feet.

    conferences biggiepac.png

Edit: My biggest hope is that we can somehow take the creme de la creme of the Pac12/Big12/ACC.  THAT would actually make for a splash.  ACC GOR is the biggest hurdle to that though.
