Fall Ball Takeaways: Phil Knight and Rob Mullens watch on as Ducks add speedy WR to roster

The Oregon Ducks have been underway in the 2023 college football season for a week now, but Tuesday afternoon was the first time that media members were allowed to watch for the first 20 minutes of the session.

With a whole host of new players coming to town since spring ball ended, this offered a chance to see some of the new freshmen on the roster, and a handful of transfers that committed to the Ducks since the spring game.

There was one addition to the roster on Tuesday that came as a surprise, with Oregon adding one of the fastest men in all of college athletics as a walk-on.

With a chance to talk to head coach Dan Lanning, linebacker Jeffrey Bassa, and wide receiver Kyler Kasper later this afternoon following the practice, we will have more coming out this evening about the Ducks’ continuation of fall camp.

For now, though, here are the biggest takeaways from the fifth practice of the season.

Oregon Ducks fall camp practice observations: Olympian, NCAA champion joins receiving corps

Olympian and NCAA champion sprinter Micah Williams has joined the Oregon football roster.

Williams, a junior, was on the field with the Ducks for their sixth practice of fall camp Tuesday afternoon at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex.

Last month, the 2021 NCAA indoor champion in the 60 meters tweeted that he wanted to play football. He was among six players to field punts on Tuesday along with Tez Johnson, Kris Hutson, Gary Bryant Jr., Troy Franklin and Nikko Reed.

The offensive and defense lines had their usual two-and-two matchups on the outside and two or one on three inside.

The pairings were as follows...

Oregon Football Fall Camp Updates: Practice No. 6

Oregon's sixth practice of the spring took place on Tuesday, here are updates from the day.

Media was welcomed back into practice for the first time this fall on Tuesday afternoon. The team was in full pads on for their sixth day of camp.

Star sprinter Micah Williams has joined the football team. He is listed as a junior wide receiver wearing No. 84. Williams ran a wind-legal 9.86 in the 100 meters a year ago, and is among the nation's fastest athletes regardless of sport.

Very few absences existed on Tuesday. Junior wideout Josh Delgado acted as the lone scholarship absence. Walk-on defenders Elijah Williams and Xavier Barksdale weren't present either. The rest of the team was accounted for.

‘You can’t coach fast’: Oregon track star Micah Williams joins Ducks football team

Last month, Oregon track and field star Micah Williams tweeted he wanted to play football. Less than a week into fall camp, the reigning Pac-12 100-meter champion was on the field with the Ducks.

Williams, whose nickname is “Quad-Good Gosh,” caught punts and worked with the receiving corps Tuesday afternoon at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex. The desire he expressed three weeks earlier, which Oregon coach Dan Lanning said he would “explore” with track and field coach Jerry Schumacher, has become a reality.

“Micah wanted to play football and we want to give him a chance to see if he can,” Lanning said. “It’s been a long time; he hasn’t really played since his freshman year in high school. But you can’t coach fast and he’s fast. We’ll see what he’s able to do out there for us.”

The article has much more info...

Projecting Ducks 2023 depth chart following first week of fall camp

The first week of fall camp is now behind us in Eugene, and the Oregon Ducks are full steam ahead going into the 2023 season. While media members have not had a chance to watch practices yet, through interviews with both coaches and players, we’ve got a good sense of players who are standing out and making a big leap following the offseason.

We are less than a month away from the first game of the year on September 2 against the Portland State Vikings, so Dan Lanning and his staff have to be formalizing a depth chart and seeing which players work the best with each unit on the squad.

Though we won’t know the starters until that first Saturday in September, here is our projection for Oregon’s depth chart following the first week of fall camp.

Kyler Kasper glad he made decision to enroll a year early

Oregon redshirt freshman receiver Kyler Kasper is pleased with his decision to join the program a year early. Kasper played sparingly in 2022, but has a leg up on this year's crop of frosh.

Kyler Kasper would be taking part in his first fall camp this month had he not elected to skip his senior year of high school and enroll at Oregon this time a year ago.

Kasper wound up redshirting in 2022 anyways, but the year within the program allowed him time to get some of the growing pains out of his system.

"I'm definitely glad I made the decision," he said following Tuesday's practice. "I could've been coming here now with all these freshmen guys. I've been here. I know what's going on. I already know how to go about things."

Kasper was nudged to forgo his final year of high school by his father Kevin Kasper, a former standout wide receiver at Iowa and Super Bowl champion.

Oregon Ducks the latest team to utilize Monarc Seeker robotic quarterback machine

Oregon is getting a helpful hand, from a robot.

The Ducks are the latest football team to utilize the Monarc Seeker, a programmable ball machine that offers far more capabilities than a traditional JUGS machine.

“You want to create game reps,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “We haven’t had it long enough to be able to tell you a ton, but at the end of the day we want to create game reps/ So we can get as many reps as we can possibly get. That’s something that allows us to get quick, effective reps that you know the ball is going to be in a certain location. You can execute at a high level.”
