Pennsylvania Duck Moderator No. 1 Share Posted August 12, 2023 Preventing, forcing turnovers emphasized in first fall scrimmage for Oregon Ducks The Oregon Ducks will hold their first scrimmage of fall camp this afternoon at Autzen Stadium. The team’s first eight practices of fall camp have featured back-and-forth plays from the offense and defense. Each side wants the advantage today, with an emphasis still on playing fast and preventing and forcing turnovers. Oregon coach Dan Lanning said he wants to see “the ability to execute our offense and our defense fast, special teams at a fast level and a high level of execution.” With so many key returning pieces, additions at receiver, and a reloading offensive line, the first-team offense has a foundation to build upon. The second- and third-team offenses have more youth and today is a major evaluation day for younger players to show if they are ready to take on bigger roles. Head coach Dan Lanning was pleased with parts and unhappy with other elements of the team's play. Inconsistency was the word of the day for head coach Dan Lanning coming out of Saturday's first scrimmage of fall camp. Oregon's coach liked some of how the offense executed and some of how the defense played in space and how some of the true freshmen played in their first college scrimmages, but none of it was as routinely up to standard. "I don't know if it was consistent enough at the level we want," Lanning said shorty after executing Autzen Stadium on Saturday afternoon. "We have really high expectations for what we want. At times, we were really really good and at times we weren't. We've got to be more consistent." Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 5 Share Posted August 13, 2023 Dan Lanning provides update on status of Oregon defensive lineman Popo Aumavae Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was unwilling to discuss many details from the Ducks’ first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday afternoon. But he did provide one notable injury update. Popo Aumavae, Oregon’s senior all-conference nose tackle, was able to take part in the scrimmage after he was absent from Friday’s practice. “Popo was out there a little bit. (Junior defensive lineman Keyon Ware-Hudson) was not,” Lanning said when asked about the status of each player. That’s significant news for the Ducks and should prompt a collective sigh of relief from the program’s fan base. Aumavae was one of the top interior defensive linemen in the nation in 2021. But he suffered a foot injury last fall that kept him sidelined for the entire 2022 campaign. The Ducks will now have a day off Sunday before returning to work Monday. During Oregon’s preseason media day on July 31, Irving found himself sitting at a small table and surrounded by cameras, recorders and reporters peppering him with questions. The junior running back, never one to embrace the spotlight, handled the attention with ease. “It’s nothing I really look into,” Irving said. “I just want to be the best teammate I can be and just trying to focus on what I can do to help this team win football games. I don’t really care about the cameras or any of that type of stuff. I’m just trying to be a good teammate.” After a season in which he started 12 of 13 games and rushed for 1,058 yards on 156 carries with five touchdowns, Irving has become one of the faces of the Oregon program. In the preseason media poll released last month, Irving was a first-team all-Pac-12 selection, and last week he was named to the preseason watch lists for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s top running back, and the Walter Camp Player of the Year. With the return of decorated fifth-year senior place kicker Camden Lewis and junior kickoff specialist Andrew Boyle, Oregon appears to be set at those positions heading into the fall. Lewis is ranked No. 5 in program history with 302 career points — former running back Royce Freeman is the record-holder with 384 — and his 37 field goals rank fourth all-time and 14 behind Aidan Schneider’s school record of 51. Boyle averaged 63.6 yards on 75 kickoffs last season with 52 touchbacks. Sophomore defensive back Khamari Terrell used special teams as his platform to make an impact a year ago. He's shooting for more in season two. "Last year it took it me a while to learn the defense, so as I was learning the plays I tried to make a big impact on special teams. This year I'm trying to take over the STAR spot," he said after Friday's practice. Terrell was one of six freshmen to avoid redshirting a season ago, playing 148 total snaps over 10 appearances. More than 100 of those snaps came on special teams with just 43 taking place on defense. He finished with eight total tackles. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds a year ago, Terrell's build does not match the STAR prototype. More compactly built players often thrive there, as they're better suited to excel in run support. What does he bring to the table that makes him a good fit for STAR?
