Demetrice Martin describes where defense has most improved since 2022

A year ago, the Oregon Ducks had a offense that was as good as any in the nation, but a defense that at times struggled to hang with the best teams in the Pac-12.

Whether it was missed assignments or blown coverages, the defensive secondary often received ridicule for their play down the stretch.

The Ducks finished the year with the No. 106 passing defense in the nation, with a third-down conversion rate that ranked No. 126 in the nation.

While a lot of that had to do with the lack of a pass rush applying pressure to the QB, the secondary also shares some of the blame with subpar coverage.

Going into 2023, though, the defensive secondary is hoping to have a stronger start to the year, and cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin says that the driving factor in their success so far has been connection and communication.

Demetrice Martin details how the secondary has improved since last season

It's no secret that Oregon's defense struggled against the pass last season. Whether it was a lack of personnel, lack of a pass rush, inconsistencies with the defense, or bad communication, problems were afoot.

As 2022 became 2023, Oregon made it a mission to add to its secondary. The Ducks landed a trio of Khyree Jackson, Tysheem Johnson, and Evan Williams to start before adding Nikko Reed in the transfer portal.

After that, Oregon landed multiple highly regarded four-star recruits in Rodrick Pleasant, Daylen Austin, and Cole Martin. These additions came to a room that already featured impact players like Trikweze Bridges, Jahlil Florence, and Dontae Manning.

The move of acquiring moldable talent still hasn't taken the field for a regular season game, but it seems to be paying dividends during practices and scrimmages as of now.

Oregon CB coach Demetrice Martin 'pretty proud' of how son Cole Martin has attacked fall

Oregon's coaching staff features more than a few proud fathers, but for defensive assistant coaches Tony Tuioti and Demetrice Martin their pride comes from sources within the football program.

Martin couldn't help but beam on Monday when discussing his son Cole Martin, freshman defensive back, and his approach during his first fall camp. Just like Tony Tuioti and his son, freshman outside linebacker Teitum Tuioti, Martin doesn't act as his son's position coach.

"I'm pretty proud of him from watching from outside of my room working with the stars and the safety with coach [Chris] Hampton," Martin said following the team's 10th fall practice.

"Playing safety at the end of his senior year in high school was new to him. They just kind of stuck him in the middle of the field and said see ball, get ball. That type of thing. Now he has a lot more run fits and pass responsibilities that he's learning but he's picking it up."

The younger Martin turned heads in the spring game with a slew of impressive plays. He was credited with three tackles and one pass break up.

Oregon Ducks Defensive Back Nikko Reed Working at Nickel in Fall Camp

Heading into the 2023 season, Oregon's defense will be under a microscope.

After all, many believe the unit largely under-achieved in 2022, despite featuring multiple NFL Draft picks like Christian Gonzalez (Rd. 1, pick 17), DJ Johnson (Rd. 3, pick 80) and Noah Sewell (Rd. 5, pick 148).

One of the main areas Dan Lanning is looking to improve is in the secondary. After losing pieces like Bennett Williams to graduation, he's getting creative and moving players around.

Nikko Reed is an early example of that in fall camp. On Monday, the Colorado cornerback transfer revealed that he's learning a new position with the Ducks.

"I've been switching from corner to the nickel back," Reed said of where he's improved the most. "Just learning that, is a big improvement for me because I've only been learning corner for two years of college. Moving closer to the ball is an improvement for me because I never thought that I'd be able to do that."

Oregon's freshmen CBs pushing the vets, have 'upped the level' at corner

Oregon CB coach Demetrice Martin says true freshmen corners Rodrick Pleasant and Daylen Austin have challenged the veterans in the room with their play this fall.

There's no guarantee that true freshmen cornerbacks Daylen Austin and Rodrick Pleasant will play this fall. The pair of elite corner prospects, who each arrived after spring, have a heap of veterans to out-duel first.

If nothing else, the duo has done its job this fall, cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin said on Monday evening. Their natural abilities have been hard to miss, Martin says, and that's led to better play across the position.

"They've upped the level. They've upped the score," Martin said. "Now they've helped Trikweze [Bridges], they've helped [Dontae] Manning, they've helped all those other guys step up their game."

Nikko Reed enjoying his new team, new position with the Ducks

Nikko Reed was a standout at Colorado at cornerback the last two seasons for the Buffaloes. He started 13 of the 24 games he played over his first two seasons, and he also led the Buffs in interceptions in 2022.

So when he landed at Oregon this spring after entering the transfer portal many assumed he'd be in line for a potential starting spot a cornerback.

Instead, Reed is playing at corner while also learning a new position within his new defense and program.

"Learning a new position, I've been switching between Corner and Nickelback," Reed said of early impressions of fall camp. "Learning that has been a big improvement for me.

Oregon cornerback coach Demetrice Martin recruited Reed to Colorado and then coached him during his freshman season in 2021.

Martin joined the staff at Oregon ahead of the 2022 season and the Ducks were quick to target Reed out of the portal. The reason? His ability to fit within Oregon's defense.
