Fall Camp: Day 12 Practice

Oregon Football Fall Camp Updates: Practice No. 12

The Ducks were outside for a fully-padded practice on Wednesday, a day after wildfire smoke forced the team inside. With winds pushing the elements east, the air quality was much improved, although a dull haze remained.

The day marked the media's first time at practice following Saturday's scrimmage. It would appear that brought some bumps and bruises, as eight scholarship players were not spotted by media.

Drew Mehringer discusses Matayo Uiagalelei, Ducks' TE room depth

During the spring football season in Eugene, an injury to starting tight end Terrance Ferguson caused a little bit of unease for the Oregon Ducks.

With Ferguson out, the depth at the position was waning. Patrick Herbert and true freshman Kenyon Sadiq were the only scholarship players suited up in that spot during the spring game.

Fortunately, the Ducks had true freshman EDGE Matayo Uiaglelei that they could lean on as well. At 6-foot-5, 265 pounds, Uiagalelei excelled as a pass-catcher in high school.

Though he came to Oregon as an elite pass-rusher, but his versatility allowed the Ducks to plug him into the offense for a few plays during the annual scrimmage.

Who will have biggest impact for Oregon football's return game in 2023?

Oregon football coach Dan Lanning has a simple checklist when it comes to finding a primary kickoff or punt return specialist.

“A guy that can catch the ball, own the ball, and then score,” he said.

The first step hasn’t been too much of a problem for the Ducks of late. Junior receiver Kris Hutson handled most of the kickoff and punt return duties last season after focusing mostly on kickoffs in 2021.

Though Hutson ranked in the middle of the pack for average yards per return, averaging just under 20 yards per kick return and 4.2 yards per punt return, he kept mistakes at a minimum.

Now, the Ducks are looking to get to those next two steps.

Oregon hasn’t had a player return a kickoff for a score since Mykael Wright housed two kickoffs in 2019 and hasn’t returned a punt for a score since Ugochukwu Amadi against UCLA in 2018.

'Living his dream:' Oregon football's Luke Basso earns praise for prowess at long snapper

On Tuesday night, the Oregon football team released a highlight package of its recent scrimmage held Saturday afternoon. There were big hits, celebrations, quarterbacks throwing passes - the usual for players that typically enjoy the spotlight.

There was even Camden Lewis attempting a field goal, with what looked like punter Ross James holding the ball in place for him to kick, with another zoomed in shot of a player making a hold for a placekick.

Nowhere in the video was Oregon’s likely new starting long snapper, Luke Basso, who has earned praise from several of his coaches and teammates.

But that just comes with the position.

Tight ends coach Drew Mehringer uncertain if they'll use a four-man rotation again

Four Oregon tight ends played at least 200 snaps a season ago. Under position coach Drew Mehringer, the quartet rotated with great regularity, and Terrance Ferguson, Cam McCormick and Moliki Matavao made six starts each.

Mehringer isn't sure if they'll rotate with the same frequency this year. Simply put, this year's room lacks some of the experience of last year's group.

"We've got three guys who've played. So, we'll see how that works out for us. I'm not sure just yet," he said following Wednesday's practice.

"It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I don't know what we're willing to say just yet. I think we're still learning our team and how they dynamics all fit together, but I do think we have some guys who can play and help us win some games. So, we'll see."

Both McCormick and Matavao are gone. Ferguson and Patrick Herbert, who played the fourth most snaps (219), are joined by Ole Miss transfer Casey Kelly as the team's veterans.

If the Ducks are to get back to a four-player rotation, the fourth will likely be true freshman Kenyon Sadiq. An elite recruit, Sadiq enrolled in January to prepare himself for early playing time. While Mehringer has raved about his approach, he's not quite sure what the 6-foot-3 and 235 pound frosh's role will be this season.

OL Nishad Strother repping at both guard spots as offensive line competition continues in fall camp

It would never be easy for Oregon to replace one of the best offensive lines in football. Four of its five starters are off to the NFL or coaching careers, as Steven Jones remained the lone returner.

Under head coaches Mario Cristobal and Dan Lanning, the Ducks have assembled talent along the offensive line, and that talent will be tested in the 2023 season. With, essentially, four spots up for grabs, fall camp has had more competition than in the past few years.

Among the additions to the offensive line this offseason was East Carolina transfer Nishad Strother, a multi-year starter for the Pirates and another proven piece to add to the competition.

Strother, at ECU, started all 13 games at left guard in 2022 and has appeared in 34 contests with 30 starts. He spent time as an offensive tackle early in his career but worked as the team's starting left guard for the past two years.

Per PFF, the former Havelock High School product recorded 843 offensive snaps last season, grading out with a 72.8 offensive mark. He earned a 57.9 grade in pass protection and a solid 77.0 run-blocking grade.

Mehringer on TE Patrick Hebert: 'We're seeing his skillset blossom'

During the 2022 season, Patrick Herbert had his fair share of productive moments. For starters, his first touchdown catch came against Cal, a 40-yard catch and run that showcased his talent and athleticism in the open field, a trait that earned him a four-star recruiting grade.

Herbert was an excellent blocker in 12 or 13 personnel sets the Ducks liked to run.

But the touchdown grab and other catches along the way showed his true potential of a "do-it-all" tight end that injuries had clouded. While Herbert admitted he was 100-percent last season, he was usually option No. 4 in a crowded tight end room with Terrance Ferguson, Moliki Matavao, and Cam McCormick.

The 2023 season will provide the best opportunity for Herbert to become a mainstay in the new Will Stein offense, as Ferguson was the only returner from the room a year ago.

Heading into his first fully healthy season in over two years, Patrick Herbert is beginning to shine in fall camp.

Oregon saw instant impact potential in Ole Miss transfer Casey Kelly

When Oregon saw tight end Moliki Matavao and Cam McMormick leave the program after the 2022 season for more playing time elsewhere, the Ducks knew they needed to add depth and reload the talent at the tight end position.

Oregon signed high school athlete Kenyon Sadiq out of the state of Idaho and then in the spring the Ducks found a natural fit in Ole Miss transfer Casey Kelly.

Oregon tight end coach Drew Mehringer said he knew of Kelly and his availability, but also that he needed to do his homework on adding the junior.

So Mehringer naturally went to two people already with the program that have coached or played with Kelly previously at Ole Miss.

A Healthy Popo Aumave Will be Crucial to Oregon's Revamped Pass Rush in 2023

It's no secret that Oregon's defense struggled to get after the quarterback in 2022.

Game after game the opposing quarterback either had ample time to throw, or would extend plays outside the pocket, leading to sustained drives and ultimately more points on the board.

The absence of a consistent pass rush surely wasn't for a lack of talent. The Ducks had an NFL Draft pick in outside linebacker DJ Johnson and

Part of the problem was a majority of that pressure coming from the edges. Heading into the 2023 season, Dan Lanning and Tony Tuioti have a wealth of experience to work with along the interior of the defensive line.

One of the more valuable pieces will surely be senior defensive tackle Popo Aumavae, a first-team AP All-Conference selection in 2021.

Jordan Burch getting comfortable in new environment and scheme

Oregon defensive lineman Jordan Burch has transferred across the country this offseason. He's gaining comfort in his new surroundings.

While Dan Lanning's offseason theme centered around taking the step from good to great, South Carolina transfer Jordan Burch was offered a different challenge: going from home to a fresh slate.

Heading west has certainly brought on change. The former five-star prep recruit grew up in the same city he played his college ball at in Columbia (S.C.). In moving thousands of miles away, he's been forced to embrace the newness.

"Just learning new things," he said of his offseason. "I guess you could say in any part of life. I think I'm catching on pretty good to with adapting to a new environment."

Now out of his comfort zone across the country, Burch say he finds solace in frequent calls back home to family.

Most intriguing Oregon position battles midway through fall camp

The Oregon Ducks are just 16 days away from their season opener with Portland State at Autzen Stadium.

With a dozen fall practices in the books, we’ve learned plenty about the 2023 iteration of Dan Lanning’s squad. While Oregon does not typically release public depth charts, it’s apparent that frontrunners are beginning to emerge for starting jobs at a few key positions.

Ahead of the Ducks’ 13th fall practice, here are three seemingly unresolved position battles to keep tabs on throughout the remainder of August.
