Freshman DB Collin Gill turned heads in second fall scrimmage

One of Oregon's least-heralded true freshman made a strong impression in the team's final scrimmage of camp over the weekend. According to head coach Dan Lanning defensive back Collin Gill picked off a pair of passes on Saturday.

"He had a couple of interceptions on Saturday," Lanning said on Wednesday afternoon. "Which is pretty impressive for him,"

Listed at 6-feet tall and 215 pounds, Gill signed with the Ducks as a three-star recruit from Washington D.C. A cornerback in high school, Gill has been working at STAR primarily this camp along with some work at safety.

Bo Nix praises defensive improvements: 'I'm excited that they're our defense'

Dan Lanning praised the caliber of play he saw from the team's defense moments after Saturday's scrimmage inside Autzen Stadium concluded.

The scrimmage was closed to media and the general public alike, but according to quarterback Bo Nix, Lanning may have undersold just how dominant the defensive showing was.

"That was polite of coach Lanning," he said of his coach's post-scrimmage assessments. "They look really good right now."

Per Nix, the multitude of new pieces, Oregon added six portal players with starting experience this offseason, have fallen into place, and the result has been the type of defense that can leave offenses short on solutions.

How Oregon Ducks are approaching kickoff, punt return in 2023 after dreadful 2022

For the past generation Oregon has been known for its dynamic special teams players, regularly ranking among the top 25 in punt and kickoff returns.

It’s what makes last season’s dismal results all the more bizarre. The Ducks averaged just 18.81 yards per kickoff return, 90th nationally, and 4.92 yards per punt return, 106th of 131 FBS teams, marking the lowest results for the program since at least 1980.

While some fans fret over valuable players like leading receiver Troy Franklin and top running back Bucky Irving possibly increasing their exposure to hits by playing on special teams, No. 15 Oregon can’t afford to repeat such dreadful results this season.

Oregon has called upon some of its elite players in return roles in the past, including Jevon Holland, De’Anthony Thomas, LaMichael James and Kenyon Barner and an influx of talent at the skill positions gives UO more options in the return game.

Dan Lanning, Bo Nix give early thoughts on Portland State matchup

The Oregon Ducks football team officially starts to prepare for its season opener after an off-season that has seemed to last longer than usual.

It’s not quite game week yet, but the Ducks are thinking about that season-opening game against Portland State. The Vikings are quite the contrast compared to last season’s opening opponent, the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs.

The contest will be in Autzen, not Atlanta, and the Ducks will be overwhelming favorites.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said that Oregon will not overlook its FCS opponent from the northern part of the state.

Quarterback Bo Nix was asked about what success looks like when you play an opponent that you are expected to not only defeat but to defeat by a lot. Nix is already starting to sound like a coach.

Dan Lanning highlights tackling and offensive execution as fall camp's high notes

Fall camp is wrapping up, and we’re nine days out from Week 1 against Portland State, which means the Oregon Ducks’ season is almost upon us. On Wednesday, Dan Lanning spoke to the media about their preparation for Portland State and how the team is looking after fall camp.

Offensively, Lanning wanted to highlight how the team has improved its execution since the spring and last season. When asked about the way the team has improved, he had this to say about the strengths of the offense...

Five Takeaways: Bo Nix back for one reason, plus final thoughts from camp

The hype in Eugene is real. Quarterback Bo Nix’s Heisman billboards going up across the country only strengthen it.

Year 2 of the Dan Lanning/Nix era kicks off in a week and a half with Portland State coming down for the interstate opener.

A lot of questions should be answered then. Who’s done enough to secure a starting spot? How will the offensive line settle in? Can new coordinator Will Stein’s offense transition seamlessly?

Lanning and Nix both talked with media for the final time before gameday after practice Wednesday. Here are the five most significant takeaways...

‘A car crash every play’: How Oregon football is growing its offensive line’s versatility

Year-after-year, despite several coaching changes, the Oregon football team has established itself as one of the premier rushing offenses in the Pac-12. With that comes an offensive line that has been mostly dominant for years.

Whether it was under Chip Kelly, Mark Helfrich, Mario Cristobal, or now head coach Dan Lanning, the standard has been set.

Sixth-year senior Steven Jones, who has primarily practiced at right guard during fall camp, is one of the last remaining members of Oregon’s 2019 Rose Bowl-winning team.

“A lot of people on that team was selfless,” Jones said. “Everyone did everything for the team, for the team, for the team. We had a culture at that time that forced everyone to uphold the standard for the team … they look to me to see what the standard is and how to go about the process of being a collegiate athlete. I take pride in that.”

In 2023, the Ducks will have to replace just about every starter from its offensive line a year ago, but the expectations and standard for that group have not changed.

“There’s a standard,” offensive line coach A’lique Terry said. “Other people are going to put pressure on us, but we have a standard of ourselves that we want to keep … as long as our standard is the same, we’re looking at it like we have a standard to upkeep. Then once we get to it, let's raise that bad baby.”

Everything Oregon players and coaches said this week about last weekend's scrimmage

The Ducks held their second of two fall scrimmages last weekend. Head coach Dan Lanning had little to say about the scrimmage in its aftermath, but Lanning and fellow coaches and players offered plenty of insights about it this past week.

The Ducks held their second of two fall scrimmages inside Autzen Stadium last weekend.

Details in its direct aftermath were limited, as head coach Dan Lanning shared little directly following its conclusion.

"A lot of good work out there today; really physical, a lot to clean up," he said in his opening statement. "Defense really had a better hand probably for most of the day today. We're playing a real physical brand of ball. We weren't able to connect on a couple plays down the field and had a couple of costly takeaways...

"Offense had some success in two minute there at the very end of the series and had some success in the red area. So some good back and forth towards the end. Overall, I think we'll be able towatch this and get a good idea where we're sitting at as a team."

After a full film review, Lanning along with fellow coaches and players, offered further insights during this past week.

Dan Lanning outlines where he's seen most growth during fall camp

When asked to list areas of improvement he's witnessed during fall camp, head coach Dan Lanning pointed to one item for each side of the football.

Offensively, he's seen the overall operation executed at a higher level, and defensively, well, he's liked the way they've brought ball carriers to the turf.

"I'd say defensively, we've tackled a lot better, offensively, executing at a high level," he told reporters on Wednesday, the final day of camp.

Blake Purchase, Collin Gill earn early praise from Dan Lanning in fall camp

One of the most common refrains from coaches and players in college football is that when a high school prospect finally arrives on campus and joins the team, you can throw the recruiting stars out the window.

What you did at the previous level might have helped you get to where you are, but they don’t mean anything going forward.

Some players leave high school with all of the accolades and hype, while others weren’t recruited as prominently, but still find a spot on prominent teams. How successful they are at the next level is up to them.

No two players better depict that journey on Oregon’s roster this fall than true freshmen Blake Purchase and Collin Gill. While both had different recruiting processes in high school, the pair have earned some high praise so far during fall camp.
