College football’s 10 most efficient teams per play, ranked

Entering Week 4 of college football, 10 teams ranked as the most efficient per play have a shot at ending the SEC's national champion reign. Ironically, the SEC doesn't have a single team slotted inside the first dozen of the national efficiency, a bit of a surprise considering the league began the season with three top-five teams.

ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) breaks down teams in detail using net efficiency ratings in three different categories — offense, defense and special teams — to formulate an overall ranking. This includes the nation's 10 most efficient teams per play through three weeks with a look at how each squad has fared in every phase of the game.

The FPI is "measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is.

Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily."

Here are the nation's most efficient teams per play after three weeks...
