Pac-12 Power Rankings entering Week 12: Oregon State handles business to set the stage for potential chaos

Washington and Oregon are barreling toward a rematch in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

The Huskies went back and forth with Utah in an electric second quarter inside Husky Stadium, then put the clamps on the Utah offense in the second half to leave with a seven-point win.

Meanwhile, Oregon started with a bang against USC and then stumbled and bumbled a bit in the second half to a nine-point win.

The quarterbacks are dueling. The offenses are humming. The title game is nearly set.

Except…

Hear that in the distance? Sounds like a chainsaw.

The 8-2 Oregon State Beavers can ruin the Pac-12’s season. A College Football Playoff berth looks like it could be on the line if Oregon and Washington both make it to Vegas unscathed.

If the Beavs beat either, it gets much more difficult. And after a three-point road loss in Tucson, Oregon State has rebounded very nicely to set itself up for… well, everything. The season-long goal. It’s right in front of the Beavs.

It’s once again time to update the Power Rankings, so let’s dive in...

Jon Gold: How Oregon State can pull off the impossible and dash the Pac-12’s playoff dreams

Let’s just get this right out of the way: Yes, Oregon State can do what few expect them to do the next 2 weeks and beat Washington and Oregon in that order, throwing a wrench into the Pac-12’s College Football Playoff plans while dealing themselves a trip to Las Vegas.

They’ve got the ground game and the defense, the passing upside and the coaching.

Any other team this year? I’m not so sure.

Utah barely went down swinging. USC? Come on.

The Beavers are uniquely situated to pull off the improbable, bordering on the impossible. It will come down to just a handful of reasons, but it’s doable.

Pac-12 Power Rankings Week 12

With College Football kicking off across the country with Week 12 of the football season, we dive into our Pac-12 Power Rankings ahead of the season.

We'll be updating these rankings throughout the week each Monday after games have been played. This year, the Pac-12 will be playing its last season as we know of the league in its current format.

USC, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon are off to the Big 10 in 2024 while Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and Arizona State head to the Big 12.

What we get though is maybe the most loaded conference we've seen in some time as five Pac-12 teams are ranked inside the Top 25 by major polls and seven or eight teams could make a bowl game.

Here are our Power Rankings heading into Week 10 as the Pac-12 continues to impress the nation...

College Wire's Pac-12 writers make their Week 12 selections

The last football season of the Pac-12 is almost over and it’s difficult to believe this is it.

The standings are shaping out about the way we all thought it would be with Oregon and Washington is still on that collision course for Las Vegas. But all of that could be derailed with the Huskies traveling to Corvallis to play the 10th-ranked Beavers.

Oregon State controls its own destiny if, and it’s a big if, the Beavers could pull off a couple of upsets by winning its week and their last trip to Eugene in the foreseeable future.

The writers on the College Wire staff have analyzed these games as much as we can (ok, maybe not) and here are our selections for the Week 12 contests...

The 8 most important games for Oregon Duck fans to watch in Week 12

We’ve got just three weeks of football remaining before bowl games roll around and the College Football Playoff rankings are locked in stone, so every game from here on out gets more intense by the week.

For the Oregon Ducks, there’s an opportunity to secure a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game this weekend, and depending on what happens elsewhere in the nation, they could find a way up in the CFP rankings as well.

There are a lot of teams that Duck fans need to root against, and at least one rival that they need to root for.

When looking at the slate of games this weekend, there are several that hold significant ramifications on the Ducks, including a showdown between No. 5 Washington and No. 11 Oregon State in Corvallis.

Based on the winner of that game, the Ducks could either be in the conference title game — assuming they get a little bit of help elsewhere — or heading for a top-10 matchup with the Beavers in the final Civil War for who knows how long, with the winner going to Las Vegas.

Sounds like some high stakes.

Let’s take a look at the slate of games this weekend and figure out which contests you need to most concern yourself as an Oregon fan...

Ducks Wire Roundtable: Predictions, opinions for No. 6 Oregon vs. ASU

There will be a lot of things to pay attention to on Saturday for fans of the Oregon Ducks.

On the field, Dan Lanning and his team will look to continue their successful season and potentially lock up a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game with a win — and some help from Washington and Utah — and pick up their first ever November win against Arizona State.

Elsewhere, some massive games will be played in the world of college football, particularly about 45 minutes north of Eugene with the No. 5 Huskies taking on the Oregon State Beavers.

Pac-12 Power Rankings: Ducks separate from the pack even more as UW downs OSU

The stage is set for the final two weeks of the year, and every team knows what lies in front of them.

For the Washington Huskies, a guaranteed spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game helps, but they have aspirations much greater than that at this point. For the Oregon Ducks, a win on Friday against the Oregon State Beavers stands between them and a rematch against the only team that’s been able to beat them this year.

That’s what Saturday’s action left us with, with the Ducks again rolling to a blowout victory while Michael Penix and the Huskies were in a grind-it-out dogfight against the Beavers, ultimately coming away with a 2-point win.

It’s left us with very little change at the top of the Pac-12 Power Rankings, where the Ducks have now created even more separation from the rest of the pack as they continue to look like one of the best teams in the nation.

Here’s a look at the rankings after Week 11...

10 things I'm absolutely overreacting to after Week 12 in the Pac-12

After UCLA’s resounding and rewarding 38-20 win over USC, it’s not about our overreaction, but possibly Martin Jarmond’s.

Will he overlook some very serious concerns and retain his beleaguered head coach after one of the most lopsided matchups in the history of the cross-town rivalry?

Will USC look at a similar set of concerns and reign in Lincoln Riley?

Now that would be an overreaction.

Everyone is hoping for that rematch between Oregon and Washington in the Pac-12 Championship Game in Vegas Dec. 1.

The winner will not only win the conference, but they will probably earn a trip to the College Football Playoff as well and that quarterback will also be the leading candidate to win college football’s most prestigious award.

College Wire's Pac-12 writers make their Week 13 selections

It’s Rivalry Week in the Pac-12 and in many of the other conferences and unfortunately, most of these games aren’t supposed to be toss-ups.

There is one clear favorite in all of these games, but as we all know, you can throw the records out when a rivalry is concerned.

There’s still plenty to play for as the regular season ends. Washington has already clinched a spot in the Pac-12 title game with Oregon and Arizona still needing a win.

If the Ducks beat the Beavers, they’re in and will get that much-awaited rematch with the Dawgs. Arizona needs the Ducks to lose and defeat the Sun Devils in order to go to Las Vegas.

According to the writers here at the College Wire sites that cover the Pac-12, the conference title game, the last championship game, will have as much riding on it as ever before.

Pac-12 QB Power Rankings entering Week 13: Rivalry Week gives Heisman platforms to Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr.

Welcome to Rivalry Week, where all eyes will be on the Pacific Northwest.

Washington battles Washington State in the Apple Cup seeking an unbeaten regular season. Oregon battles Oregon State in the Civil War seeking a berth in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

Michael Penix Jr. vs. Bo Nix, Pt. 2. We’re one Oregon win away from a conference title clash that could sway the Heisman Trophy race.

Nix is currently locked in a two-man race with LSU’s Jayden Daniels. Daniels’ LSU Tigers won’t play in their conference’s title game, and they’re playing an otherwise meaningless game this upcoming Saturday.

Heisman voters tend to be pretty reactionary. Remember, on Oct. 14, the trophy was awarded to Penix for outdueling the Ducks inside Husky Stadium. In the month since, Penix has completely been cut out of the conversation.

That can change over the next two weeks. A signature moment against a hated rival to capture the program’s second-ever 12-0 regular season? That’ll do it.

Of course, Nix will have another national stage against a top-25 team this Friday when Oregon hosts Oregon State.

Nix is the favorite if you ask me. He’s exceptional, just like Daniels. But unlike Daniels, Nix has the Ducks in the Playoff discussion. He has the Ducks positioned to play for a conference title. That should matter. If he can lead Oregon to two more wins, I think it will matter.

Lots still to be settled as the final week of the regular season approaches.

Alluring Pac-12 fuels surge in college football television viewership

Through the first seven weeks of the season, when data was collected, the Pac-12 saw a 60% rise in viewership over last season. While no surprise, the data remains striking because it underscores how talented transfer quarterbacks – Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., Oregon’s Bo Nix – can quickly make programs must-see TV. USC was an unmitigated disappointment, but the play of Caleb Williams rightly attracted eyeballs.

Pac-12 Power Rankings: The final week of Pac-12 play brings near chaos to the rankings

The writing was on the wall for the Pac-12 before the 2023 football season began. This would be the final year of Pac-12 football as we know it, and it did not disappoint.

With as many as eight Pac-12 teams being ranked in the AP Poll at a time, this was one of the most elite seasons the conference has ever seen.

The quarterback play across the Pac-12 was a big reason for its dominance. Bo Nix and Michael Penix are finalists for the Heisman Trophy, Caleb Williams and Shedeur Sanders are high NFL Draft prospects, and there are several young QBs around the conference who’ve shown tremendous promise in 2023.

On Friday, the Pac-12’s final game will be played: The conference championship between the Oregon Ducks and the Washington Huskies.

Oregon and Washington have been the Pac-12’s best teams all season, and it’s only fitting that the bitter rivals will battle it out in Las Vegas for a spot in the College Football Playoff. It surely will be a great game to end on.

The final day of a full Pac-12 slate gave us a lot of great games, including a thrill ride in the Apple Cup that nearly ended the Huskies’ perfect season.

In the end, it left us with these rankings for the conference in the final week of Pac-12 play...

Around the Pac-12: All eyes on Oregon-Washington; Bo Nix Heisman odds; Colorado Buffaloes recruits are bailing on Deion Sanders

After 13 weeks, 144 games and too much drama and entertainment to count, the Pac-12 football regular season has come to a close.

It was the last football season of the Pac-12 as we know it, of course, as schools from the conference are scattering across the country in the wake of conference realignment, taking up residence in the Big Ten, Big 12, ACC and — in the case of Oregon State and Washington State — an uncertain new home.

The reality that this is the end, that more than a century of history is imploding, would have been enough to keep things interesting.

Pac-12 football power rankings, Week 14: Is there a new No. 1 heading into the conference championship game?

The Oregon Ducks maintained their place atop the Pac-12 football power rankings from The Oregonian/OregonLive — barely.

The Ducks edged the second-place Washington Huskies by one point, securing the No. 1 ranking in our final poll of the 2023 college football season.

Oregon earned 81 points and four first-place votes from our seven-member panel, finishing with the same number of points and first-place votes as it did last week.

The Ducks ended an impressive regular season with a commanding 31-7 victory over the rival Oregon State Beavers last week.

The Huskies also received the same number of points and first-place votes (80 and three) as they did last week, landing in second place in our poll after holding off rival Washington State, 24-21, on a last-second field goal in the Apple Cup.

Oregon finished the regular season ahead of the Huskies in our rankings even though Washington beat the Ducks in October...

Bo Nix runs away from Penix with the Pac-12 QB rankings title

USC’s Caleb Williams won the PFF.com Pac-12 quarterback rankings a year ago and turned that into a Heisman Trophy. Now Oregon’s Bo Nix is attempting to make it a repeat performance in the last year of the Conference of Champions.

The Trojans’ lackluster second half cost Williams games and his ranking kept going down, but the same couldn’t be said for Nix or Washington’s Michael Penix.

They proved week in and week out that they were the top two quarterbacks in the Pac-12 and both should earn a trip to New York for the Heisman ceremonies.

As it should be, Nix and Penix will face each other on Friday for the last Pac-12 championship with the winner most likely claiming the Heisman.

Bowl Projection Roundup: Where each Pac-12 team is slotted to play after Week 13

The regular season has come to an end in the world of college football, and it’s brought with it a lot of finality.

We know who is bowl-eligible and who is not, and we know that in reality, the Pac-12 Conference has seen its end, with the final game of existence coming on Friday night between No. 3 Washington and No. 5 Oregon.

That’s given us a lot of clarity as we look ahead to the postseason, trying to figure out which bowl games each team might be in line for, and who is going to be sitting at home and getting a jump on the offseason.

Jon Gold: An ode to the Pac-12 as we near the bitter end of the Conference of Champions

I don’t know why I expected something like a stay of execution, or a reversal of fortune, or simply minds to be changed.

This was happening and it has been happening and it is happening: The Pac-12 is dying, in its current form, done in by greed and stupidity and panic and impatience.

No one actually wants it to happen, but no one wanted telephones and steam locomotives and laptop computers, either. They just happened. It’s called progress, and it’s not always linear and it’s not always good.

This is the natural order of things — there was once an ABA, too, and I’m sure fans of the old Kentucky Colonels miss professional basketball in their neck of the woods, too.

Only we’re not actually losing any teams. The bands will play on. We’ll still see some great rivalries: UCLA vs. USC, and Arizona vs. Arizona State and Washington vs. Washington State.

What we’ll miss is the Bruins traveling to the Zona Zoo and getting hissed at. Rutgers probably won’t have the same vitriol.

We’ll miss the Huskies traveling to Tempe and somehow consistently getting blinded in the sun. Is Illinois going to be the new spoiler?

We’ll miss Cal and UCLA and their sibling rivalry, and the Trojans getting the best from Washington State, for some reason.

There will be new rivalries that pop up, and yeah, some of it will be fun. I’m weirdly excited for Oregon vs. Maryland.

But it won’t be the same, that’s for sure.

Jon Gold: Highlights and lowlights that made the Pac-12 something special

The Pac-12 is ending as we know it, with longtime league members Oregon and Washington slugging it out in the final conference title game on Friday in Las Vegas, where all good things go to die.

But there’s still basketball and baseball, and between Oregon State and Washington State and perhaps a merger with the Mountain West to come, the league will remain viable in some fashion going forward.

So a full-blown memorial doesn’t feel quite right.

Instead, we’ll focus on the final remnants of a once-proud league, the dozen-year run of a Pac-12 that included a handful of old standbys and some new blood in the form of Utah and Colorado.

Here’s a look back at some of the best players, performances, highlights and lowlights of the last dozen years of football out west…

NIX NAMED PAC-12 SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix was announced as the 2023 Pac-12 Football Scholar Athlete of the Year on Friday morning for his success both on the field and in the classroom.

Nix joins UO cross country runner Izzy Thornton-Bott as Ducks to be named Pac-12 Scholar Athletes of the Year already in 2023-24. He becomes the second Oregon football player to earn the honor, joining Justin Herbert (2019).

The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports sponsored by the Pac-12, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their respective sports disciplines.

Nix graduated magna cum laude from Auburn in 2021, where he was the starting quarterback from 2019-21. He is currently pursuing a post-graduate degree in public relations at Oregon.

Nix was named to the 2022 Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll after being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll three times while at Auburn.

One final Pac-12 football game marks the end of a storied conference

As Dennis Erickson strolled out of Reser Stadium on a chilly Saturday evening in November, it finally hit him.

This was the end.

Erickson grew up watching Pac-12 football. He patrolled the conference’s sidelines for 15 years as a coach, including four at Oregon State. He relished the rivalries, treasured the traditions, cherished the West Coast’s unique brand of football that occupied a “special place in my heart.”

So after he watched the Beavers dismantle Stanford last month, after he cruised Beaver Street at a newly remodeled stadium he indirectly helped build, Erickson took a moment as he walked away to privately acknowledge the end of more than a century of history.

“I’m really having trouble with the whole thing, with the direction of college football,” Erickson said. “It really upsets me what’s going on and I thought a lot about it after the game. I’m bewildered with everything that’s going on. It’s just really sad.”

Erickson sort of speaks for all of us today, a day that will be remembered as the end of Pac-12 Conference football...

The Clash in the Desert: A history of Pac-12 teams in the Fiesta Bowl.

The week of the Fiesta Bowl has arrived, and while this year’s Oregon Ducks bowl game doesn’t feature the most exciting opponent, this game will still be a key moment in Oregon’s history.

This game ushers in the end of the Bo Nix era, and it will also mean goodbye for several other staple players for the Ducks.

Additionally, this game will mark the end of the Pac-12 for Oregon, as they’ll move on to the Big Ten next season.

Since its inception in 1971, the Fiesta Bowl has often been a frequent postseason landing spot for Oregon and the entire Pac-12 conference.

While the game hasn’t always featured a Pac-12 team, teams across the conference have plenty of history at the Fiesta Bowl, with 23 teams appearing in the bowl game since its inception...

Ducks Wire 2023 Awards: Which players impressed us the most?

While we are past the major awards season in the world of college football, with trophies such as the Heisman, the Biletnikoff, and the Joe Moore Award being given out, the end of the season has officially brought forth a time for us to take stock of the year as a whole and properly examine everything in totality.

As we’ve done for the past several years, it’s time to give out the Ducks Wire awards for the year.

We went through this earlier in the year and handed out some mid-season awards, highlighting the offensive and defensive MVPs, the most improved players on the team, and a handful of other things that deserved some precious hardware.

Now that the season is over, though, it’s time to immortalize some players with the honors officially.

To help me do so, Ducks Wire’s Don Smalley and Miles Dwyer join to cast their votes on some of the biggest awards.

Here are our official decisions for the end-of-year trophies...

Where Oregon Ducks rank in final ESPN FPI of 2023 season

The Oregon Ducks had a successful 2023 college football season, and while it stopped short of the ultimate goal of making the College Football Championship, a 12-win season with a victory in the Fiesta Bowl is never something that a fan base should turn down.

Throughout the year, we’ve kept track of the Ducks’ place in the ESPN Football Power Index, which is a ranking that measures a team’s success based on expected point margins vs. average opponents on a neutral field.

It is a ranking that offers a different look at the power balance in the nation, contrary to the College Football Playoff rankings, the Associated Press Poll, or the Coaches Poll.

The Ducks have fared well in the ESPN FPI, routinely ranking near the top of the list. So how do they fare with all but one game left to play?

Here’s a look...
