Jahlil Florence able to practice Monday, Bryan Addison away from team for personal reasons

Senior safety Bryan Addison is currently away from the Oregon football team, head coach Dan Lanning told reporters during his weekly Monday evening press conference.

"He's taking a break for himself for personal reasons," Lanning said. "I won't discuss that beyond that."

Now in his sixth year with the program, Addison has made 11 tackles this season. He also picked off Tyler Shough's final heave to seal the team's win at Texas Tech in early September.

This development appears to be a recent one. Addison logged two full practices last Tuesday and Wednesday and made the trip with the team to Seattle. He did not play in the loss to Washington nor did he appear in the win at Stanford before the bye week.

The 6-foot-5 safety has been among the team's better defensive backs on passing downs the past few seasons. He made 30 tackles in 2022 to go with two interceptions.

Sophomore cornerback Jahlil Florence was able to practice on Monday, Lanning said. "It looks like he'll be fine," Lanning said.

Florence has emerged as a starting corner opposite of Khyree Jackson during his second season of college football. He made three tackles in Saturday's loss and also picked off his first pass of the season in the final minute of the opening half.

Both Jackson and Florence required medical assistance early in the third quarter on the same play. Jackson returned to action shortly after, but Florence was unable to return.

No. 9 Oregon seeks better execution vs. Washington St.

Washington State and No. 9 Oregon will both try to rebound from difficult losses when they meet in Eugene, Ore., on Saturday afternoon.

Which defeat was more devastating remains to be seen.

The Ducks fell 36-33 at then-No. 7 Washington last Saturday as Camden Lewis’ last-second, 43-yard field-goal attempt sailed just wide of the right upright.

Meanwhile, Washington State was blown out 44-6 by Arizona the same day in Pullman, Wash. It was the second consecutive defeat for the Cougars (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12), who dropped out of the Top 25 after being ranked No. 13 before a 25-17 loss at UCLA on Oct. 7...

Players 'encouraged' and 'proud' of team's response following loss in Seattle

Oregon coach Dan Lanning told reporters on Monday that the practice to open Washington Week had been among the best they've had this year.

Dan Lanning says the GPS monitors worn by players registered their fastest speeds of any Monday practice of the year to begin this week.

Oregon's coach credited the team's veteran players for setting the tone. Unlike most Mondays, the Ducks were in full pads at the players' request.

"These guys came to work. They wanted to wear shoulder pads today. These guys wanted to go," he said on Monday evening. "I think it tells you about our team's mindset and it's really the same thing for our entire staff, our staff wanted to come in and get better as soon as they could."

Senior Brandon Dorlus, among the team's defensive leaders, referred to the workout as "ridiculous".

"I think that was the hardest Monday practice we've seen," he said. "Even looking at the numbers on the GPS, seeing how fast we were moving, that was the hardest practice we've had. That just shows that that loss really meant a lot to everybody."

This is a good article. I encourage you to read on for further details...

Washington State vs. Oregon odds, props, predictions: Offenses could shine as Ducks, Cougars look to bounce back

Oregon (5-1 SU, 5-0-1 ATS) doesn’t have any time to wallow over its first loss of the season, regardless of how painful it was.

The Ducks led their top 10 matchup at Washington inside the 2-minute mark a week ago, and lost their advantage in 33 seconds as Michael Penix, Jr. gobbled up 53 yards on two plays.

Oregon managed to run 10 plays in 1:38, but had a game-tying field goal attempt from 43 yards out go wide left. Washington State vs. Oregon odds, props and predictions hinge on how both of these teams bounce back from disappointment.

Oregon can still run the table and accomplish all of its goals by winning the Pac-12 Championship since that would likely land it a spot in the College Football Playoff if the Big Ten’s big guns cannibalize one another, but it no longer has any room for error.

It has to rebound this week against a complicated opponent in visiting Washington State (4-2, 3-3), whose offense has sputtered in consecutive defeats against UCLA and Arizona.

The first order of business will be to avoid a hangover in not letting last week’s result trickle into this contest, which means getting off to a strong start at home will be a priority...

Steve Stephens' consistent approach pays off with reinsertion into starting lineup

Sixth-year senior Steve Stephens entered 2023 with 19 career starts, including 10 a season ago.

Yet, the additions of transfers Evan Williams and Tysheem Johnson this offseason forced him to to open his final season of college football outside of the starting lineup.

Rather than hang his head, Stephens approached each week like he had in the past even though he began the first five weeks on the sideline.

"Steve is steady Eddy," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said last week. "This guy prepares every single day unbelievably. He's really a coach on the field. He's a great communicator.

"I think he starts on three special teams for us right now, and that's really where his role started a lot at the beginning of this season.

Lanning commended the way Stephens handled his business. He's seen him "answer the call" every time his number was called. After averaging 28 snaps over the first four games, Stephens saw his role elevated the past two weeks.

He played 41 snaps in Palo Alto, leading the team and matching his own personal-best with eight tackles. He was reinserted into the starting lineup in Seattle last weekend, and once again led the team with seven tackles in a season-high 62 snaps...

How Oregon football is responding to loss at Washington

Devastating. Disappointing. Disheartening.

The Oregon Ducks felt it all in the aftermath of their 36-33 loss at Washington.

“The one thing I told everybody in the locker room, even coach Lanning, was we got 24 hours,” left guard Marcus Harper II said. “That’s all we’re getting is 24 hours.

Don’t let this sprinkle over to this week. Sit within the 24 hours, we came back and we reviewed everything we got to do and now we’re on to Washington State.”

The No. 9 Ducks (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) reviewed film on Sunday and Monday, when they took to the field for a corrective practice and moved at a faster rate than in any previous Monday this season, according to Lanning, as frustration and determination merged for even greater effort.

“Win or loss we’re going to come to work,” running back Bucky Irving said. “That one loss don’t define our season. We’re going to put our head down and work.”

Players in all three phases of the game feel they missed opportunities. From the offense failing on three critical fourth downs, the defense making some big stops but allowing the game-winning touchdown with 1:38 to go and special teams with the missed field goal that would have sent the game to overtime...

Series History: Oregon vs. Washington State has featured some wild finishes

As fans are still reeling from the loss up at Washington, the Oregon Ducks are preparing to host Washington State. While this annual matchup might not hold as much weight as the Cascade Clash, there is a lot of history between these two teams.

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of the history of this matchup is the classic game that occurred in Pullman last year. The Ducks were down big in the second half, and for a while, it looked like Dan Lanning and Co. would pick up an early second loss on the season.

But, Bo Nix and the offense really started to rally, the Ducks took the lead in the final minutes and then sealed the game on a Mase Funa pick-six.

Obviously, there is a lot more history to this matchup than just that game. The two teams have played 93 times since 1901 when they matched up for the first time. The Ducks have an all-time record of 53-40 against the Cougars and are currently on a four-game win streak.

3 Keys to victory for the Ducks against Washington State on Saturday

Six days ago, the Oregon Ducks suffered their first loss of 2023, and it was a painful one. On Saturday, they’ll try to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive by beating the Washington State Cougars, who got off to a hot start this season, but have lost their last two games.

A lot like last weekend, the story for this game could be a tale of two quarterbacks. Before the Cougars’ struggles began, their QB, Cameron Ward, had made his way into Heisman conversations across the country, despite being on virtually no one’s radar in the preseason.

On the other sideline, Bo Nix will try to keep his run of quality play going to lead the Ducks to 6-1.

Washington State is a fun, fast, and talented team, so despite their losing streak, this won’t be a team that rolls over for Oregon.

In order for the Ducks to beat the Cougars, there are three things I think the Ducks need to do that I’ve listed below...

5 Washington State Cougars to watch out for this Saturday

The Oregon Ducks are coming off of one of their toughest losses in recent memory, but they won’t continue to focus on Washington. Instead, they’re looking to the Huskies in-state rivals down in Pullman.

Washington State has dropped their last two games — first to UCLA and then to Arizona. While they’ve been struggling, they are still a talented team and will be looking to regain some momentum for their season against Oregon.

Furthermore, the Ducks mounted a monster comeback against the Cougars in 2022, so Washington State will be looking to exact revenge in Eugene on Saturday.

While the Cougars are full of talented players, I’ve picked the five that I think can/will have the biggest impact on the outcome of Saturday’s game. T

Ducks Wire Roundtable: Predictions, opinions for No. 9 Oregon vs. Washington State

We knew entering the second half of the season for the Oregon Ducks, and though the last week saw the first loss of the 2023 season come, every goal that Dan Lanning and his team had coming into this year is still very attainable.

A trip to the Pac-12 Championship Game? That can happen. A spot in the College Football Playoff? it could be in the cards if the Ducks can win out from here. With six games down, and six more regular season games to go, there is still plenty possible for this Oregon squad.

That starts this coming week with a homecoming game against the Washington State Cougars.

Though it’s a matchup that has lost a little bit of luster after the Cougars dropped their last two games, it’s still one that will present a challenge for Oregon, with QB Cameron Ward bringing his unique rushing ability to Autzen to try and upset the Ducks.

To preview the action, Ducks Wire writers Zachary Neel and Miles Dwyer made predictions and offered opinions on what we might see.

Here is your sixth regular-season Ducks Wire roundtable of the 2023 season. Enjoy...

5 THINGS TO WATCH: WSU

The No. 9 Oregon football team will try to rebound from its first loss of the season when the Ducks return home to host Washington State in Autzen Stadium on Saturday.

The Ducks (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) saw a five-game winning streak to open the season end last weekend in Seattle. The Cougars (4-2, 1-2) also are looking to get right after dropping their past two games, to UCLA and Arizona.

Oregon leads the all-time series between the two, 51-42-7, including 22-18-4 in Eugene. The Ducks have won four straight in the series, on the heels of a four-game WSU winning streak from 2015-18.

Saturday's game is scheduled for a 12:40 p.m. kickoff on ABC, with play by play from Bob Wischusen, analysis from Greg McElroy and sideline reporting by Molly McGrath.

Some storylines to watch come kickoff Saturday…

ESPN 'College GameDay' crew picks winner between No. 9 Oregon and Washington State

It’s been quite a few weeks for the ESPN ‘College GameDay’ crew.

In Week 6, they were down at the Cotton Bowl for the Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas.

Last week, they were up in Seattle for the Cascade Clash between Oregon and Washington. Now, this week they will be in Columbus for the showdown between Penn State and Ohio State.

Nothing wrong with that schedule. While the ‘GameDay’ crew welcomed former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud on as the guest picker, the group went through the biggest games of the week and made their official picks.

Here’s who they picked to win the game between the Oregon Ducks and Washington State Cougars...
