Behind improved offense, Dan Lanning says Cal is 'not remotely the same team' as in the past

Justin Wilcox led teams have never been mistaken as offensive juggernauts. This year's won't be either, but it has bucked the trend of the past seven he's coached.

Under his leadership California had never finished in the top half of Pac-12 scoring offenses. Five of his six teams have been among the bottom three with two finishing dead last.

This year's ball club currently sits in fifth place in what is widely believed to be the best offensive conference in the country with a whopping 32.3 points per game scoring average.

None of his previous teams had averaged more than 27, and last year's squad was 10th in the conference at 23.9.

"They're not remotely the same team we've played in the past," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said of the Golden Bear offense.

"These guys are scoring a lot of points. They're extremely efficient. I think they're playing some of their best ball, especially offensively, here towards this point of a season."

Wilcox brought in Jake Spavital, formerly the head coach at Texas State, this offseason to run the ship, and that decision has helped change the program's fate — at least on that side of the ball...

Series History: A look back at the history of Oregon vs. Cal

On Saturday, the No. 6 ranked Oregon Ducks will face off against the California Golden Bears. The Bears’ trajectory this season has been much different than Oregon’s.

They are 3-5 and don’t have much hope for a bowl appearance whereas the Ducks are in a race for the College Football Playoff. Still, every game is just as important, and a win this weekend would be big for Oregon.

In preparation for Saturday’s game, I looked back at the long and rich history of the series between these two teams.

This series is as deadlocked as it gets — historically that is. In recent years, the Golden Bears have struggled to maintain a good football program, which has allowed the Ducks to win 13 of the 15 matchups between the two teams.

But all-time, the story is different. The Bears and the Ducks have played 83 times — with the first game dating all the way back to 1899. 42 of the games have gone to Oregon and the other 41, to Berkeley...

Jon Gold: Dan Lanning and the Ducks are embracing their role as big, bad wolves

When you have started more career games than any other quarterback in college history, you’re entitled to a few things.

One of those is over-the-top words of praise from your head coach.

But it wasn’t all the adulation that Dan Lanning heaped upon Bo Nix — and there was a lot — following Oregon’s win at then-No. 13 Utah on Saturday that has my interest piqued. It was one word in particular.

“I guess every quarterback is competitive, but this guy’s really intelligent. Really intelligent. And he thinks he’s Goliath and you know what? At times he performs like it. It’s impressive to see him be out there because he has the most confidence in the world in himself.

And that confidence really pays off on game day. I don’t know. I can’t say enough great things about Bo Nix. He’s special.”

Did you catch it?

Brandon Dorlus' versatility allowing Duck defensive front to play its best

Senior defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus has saved the best of his career for last in 2023. His versatility has allowed the Ducks to play their best up front all season.

"I think what you'll see is his versatility is really showing up this year," head coach Dan Lanning said at Monday's press conference. "We've moved him all across the front. Sometimes he's playing three technique.

Sometimes he's gonna be standing up in the game like a linebacker."

Per Pro Football Focus' snap counts, Dorlus has lined up at six different spots along Oregon's front. His snap counts are highest at defensive tackle, but he's also played both defensive end positions, nose tackle, along with both outside linebacker positions.

Dorlus says he's a changed man. His preference is to line up directly over the center now...

Injury Report: Updated look at injury news for No. 6 Oregon and California

Heading into Week 10 and the month of November, the Ducks are relatively healthy, knock on wood. There are only a couple of minor injuries that shouldn’t impact the outcome of the week’s game, one way or the other.

It’s a different story for California, however, as they have several key players who are banged up and are ruled out completely for this week’s game at Autzen Stadium.

The injury report usually resembles Santa’s naughty list at this time of year, but thankfully the Ducks can head into the last quarter of the season with nearly the entire roster intact with several big games still waiting to be played.

Here’s the injury report for both the Ducks and the Bears for the Nov. 4 contest...

The A-Bomb: Is Oregon currently the best team in the conference? Looks like it.

I’m going to preface this whole piece by acknowledging that Washington did, in fact, defeat Oregon one on one. They also remain the only undefeated team in the Pac-12. It’s their yard until someone takes it from them.

Okay, with that out of the way, I’m also going to say this; Oregon is currently the best team in the conference.

Following the classic up in Seattle, Oregon has emerged with increased fire and motivation…on both sides of the ball.

Washington, on the other hand, looks like they’re playing not to lose.

You see this happen all the time, a down-to-the-wire battle produces a loser that attacks with new gusto, and a winner that is suddenly tentative about their status at the top...

Despite Washington remaining undefeated, the Ducks have been playing the best football the past couple weeks in the Pac-12.

5 major questions for the Oregon Ducks to answer this weekend vs. California

While it may not be their most-hyped matchup of the season, this weekend’s game for the Oregon Ducks is incredibly important. Five keys to the game: No. 6 Oregon vs. California

It's the day before the day, so it's time to identify some keys for No. 6 Oregon's conference tilt with California (3-5, 1-4).

The Ducks (7-1, 4-1) will look to carry momentum from their impressive road win over the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City, while Cal look to end its three-game losing streak. All three defeats have come to ranked opponents (Oregon State, Utah and USC).

The winner of this year's game will take control on the historical series, which is currently knotted at 42-42-2. Oregon has never controlled the series record.

Oregon is currently 24.5-point favorites for this game. Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM and will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks.

Each week I identify five things that will be key to Oregon pulling out the win. These are things we believe will be worth your time to follow on Saturday, and that when the smoke clears will prove pivotal to the game's final outcome.

So, here are five keys for the Ducks picking up their eighth victory of the 2023 season over the California Golden Bears from Autzen Stadium on Saturday...

Lanning on defending Cal's RPO heavy offense: 'Everybody has to be gap sound'

Run-pass options are not new to college football or the game in general. The baseline of each RPO provides two opportunities for the quarterback, a run or a pass, determined by how the defense is attacking the current play.

The quarterback either elects to hand off to the running back at the mesh point or fake it and throw it.

The concept is simple, but the results are effective. For a brief second, the defense pauses, unsure whether or not the quarterback has kept it or handed it off to the running back, who, by that point, will have a full head of steam running toward the line.

In recent memory, the Cal Golden Bears, led by Justin Wilcox, have prided themselves on their defensive abilities. Wilcox, a former safety at Oregon in the late 1990s, is a defensive head coach by nature.

This previous offseason, Jake Spavital returned to Berkeley to take over the offensive coordinator position, and the Golden Bears responded by upping their offensive production across the board and becoming an RPO-heavy offense.

5 THINGS TO WATCH: CAL

The No. 6 Oregon football team kicks off November at home Saturday, when the Ducks host California in Autzen Stadium at 2:40 p.m.

Oregon is 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Pac-12, while Cal is 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The two teams have a pair of common opponents — each has a loss to Washington, while Utah lost to Oregon but beat Cal.

The Ducks lead the all-time series between the two programs, 42-41-2, including 19-6 in Eugene. Oregon has won eight of the last 10; the Ducks have only lost to the Golden Bears in regulation once since 2008, in Berkeley in 2020.

The Pac-12 Network will televise Saturday's game, with Ted Robinson on play by play and Yogi Roth providing analysis.

No. 6 Oregon vs. California: Betting line moves over a point in favor of Ducks

The back half of the season is set up to have a nice pace for the Oregon Ducks. After their bye week earlier in October, the Ducks had a top-19 matchup against the Washington Huskies, followed by a pretty winable game against the Washington State Cougars the next week.

This past week saw a top-15 matchup against the Utah Utes, which resulted in a highly emotional victory, but it is being followed by a game at home against the California Golden Bears that should be relatively lopsided on paper.

After that, you get games against USC and Oregon State separated by another outmatched opponent in the Arizona State Sun Devils.

So while Oregon fans are still riding high after an incredible 35-6 win over the Utes this past weekend, the next few days will offer some opportunity to decompress and get back to home base.

This weekend, Justin Wilcox and the Golden Bears come to Autzen, but it doesn’t appear that a close game is in the cards, based on the point spread as the week comes to a close.

To open the week, Oregon was favored by 23.5 points, but that line has shifted in favor of the Ducks.

Here are the latest lines and info that you need to know, courtesy of BetMGM...
