No. 6 Oregon vs. Arizona State: Ducks open as three-TD favorites down in the desert

This upcoming game for the Oregon Ducks is a classic example of past history causing a lot of concern for the fan base, while recent proof shows that it should be a lopsided affair.

In the history of Oregon Ducks football, some unfortunate things have happened when traveling down to Tempe late in the season with a great record and high hopes for post-season success.

Most recently, in 2019 the Ducks had a 9-1 record and were ranked No. 6 in the nation. They went to Tempe and lost to a 5-5 Sun Devils team that had no business competing in that game.

A couple of years before that in 2017, Oregon again lost to Arizona State, this time ranked as the No. 24 team in the nation.

It’s fair to see why Duck fans aren’t too fond of going down to Tempe. But if you look at this game in a vacuum, it’s not one that should provide much trouble for Dan Lanning and Co.

Oregon is currently rolling and playing as one of the best teams in the nation, while Kenny Dillingham and the Sun Devils are playing inspiring football, though at a level far below the Ducks.

If you take recent history out of it, this one shouldn’t be close. The betting line supports that notion.

Let’s take a look at the early lines as they came out on Sunday...

Series History: A look back at past Oregon vs. Arizona State matchups

This weekend, the Oregon Ducks will play their last Saturday game of the 2023 regular season, heading down to the desert to face off with the Arizona State Sun Devils.

This will be the 49th meeting between these two schools, and likely their last meeting for quite some time due to conference realignment in 2024.

While the Ducks have been a better program historically, the Sun Devils have shocked Oregon plenty of times in recent years, especially at home.

Of the 38 previous matchups between Oregon and Arizona State, the Ducks have won 20 and the Devils have won 18, including the most recent matchup in 2019. During that last game, Oregon was down 21-24 in the fourth quarter with a good chance at winning, but the Devils silenced the Ducks with a touchdown from Brandon Aiyuk, the now San Francisco 49ers WR, in the final minutes...

Predicting the Final Score of No. 6 Oregon vs. Arizona State

The No. 6 Oregon Ducks (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12) travel to Tempe this week for a matchup against the Arizona State Sun Devils (3-7, 2-5 Pac-12).

Oregon is flying high after a commanding 36-27 win over the USC Trojans, while ASU is also on a high after knocking off UCLA 17-7 on the road at the Rose Bowl.

If you've followed Oregon for a while, you don't need me to tell you that trips to the desert haven't been kind to the Ducks. In fact, Oregon lost this very matchup the last time these two teams played in 2019.

But maybe Dan Lanning has the Ducks ready to outgrow their hiccups against Arizona schools after a 49-22 win over the Wildcats in Tucson last year.

As for this week's game against Arizona State, they aren't a team that should be overlooked, even with a 3-7 record.

ASU's defense hasn't looked amazing overall, but they've had some bright spots this year and have helped keep the Sun Devils in close games.

They held Michael Penix Jr. and Washington, one of the best offenses in the country, to just 15 points and are a group that plays tough.

Injury Report: Updated look at injury news for No. 6 Oregon and ASU

There are just two more regular season games left in the college football season and Oregon has avoided the major injury news that plague most teams this time of year thus far.

Although the Ducks injury report is getting a bit long in the tooth, there aren’t any significant ailments that should keep any players out of this week’s contest with Arizona State.

However, the same can’t be said for Kenny Dillingham’s Sun Devils as they have been hit with a barrage of injuries, including freshman quarterback Jalen Rashada.

ASU’s injuries might have kept them from winning a couple of more games this season, but considering Oregon is fully loaded, the injuries shouldn’t have any impact to the ultimate outcome of the game in Tempe on Saturday.

Here’s the injury list for Week 12...

Kenny Dillingham says freshman QB Jaden Rashada is 'not going to be ready' to face Oregon

Kenny Dillingham has not seen enough from freshman Jaden Rashada this week to turn the keys back over to the previously injured quarterback.

Rashada made his return to full-contact practice in Tempe this week. However, Dillingham does not believe it wise to play him in Saturday's game with No. 6 Oregon.

"Obviously, he's not going to be ready this week to play," Dillingham said on Wednesday. "Our goal is just to continually get him back and ready. He could be maybe an emergency guy."

Lanning on ASU HC Kenny Dillingham: 'He's doing exactly what I anticipated him to be able to do'

Oregon's end of the 2022 regular season brought an avalanche of bad news, as the Ducks blew a 21-point lead to the rival Oregon State Beavers in a loss. Within an hour, offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham was off to become the head coach at Arizona State.

Arizona State served as the common ground for the kindling of a relationship between Oregon head coach Dan Lanning and Dillingham, as Lanning was a graduate assistant under Todd Graham, and Dillingham was a high school coach in the area.

The two would reunite again before Oregon, this time at Memphis under head coach Mike Norvell. The two coached different sides of the ball, going against each other every day in practice.

Now, flash forward multiple years, and the two are some of the youngest head coaches in college football, with Dillingham as the youngest by over a year at 33. When Saturday's matchup begins, it'll be just like the old days between Lanning and Dillingham.

However, this time, they'll be on opposite sidelines, squaring off against each other in control of their respective programs...

Oregon vs. ASU: 'Tale of the Tape' for No. 6 Ducks vs. Sun Devils

There will be a lot of familiarity on the field this weekend when the No. 6 Oregon Ducks travel down to Tempe to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Whether it’s Dan Lanning and Kenny Dillingham reuniting, or Bo Nix and Kenny Dillingham reuniting, there will be some hugs shared before the game, undoubtedly. You also have Lanning going back to a place where he coached very early on in his career as well.

The love may be felt before the game starts, but there are no guarantees that the same thing can be said once the clock starts. The Ducks are currently massive 23.5-point favorites in this game, and based on the numbers, it could get ugly quickly.

Here’s a look at the stat breakdowns and advanced metrics going into this game...

3 Keys to victory for the Oregon Ducks vs. the Arizona State Sun Devils

We’ve reached Week 12, and the college football season is nearing its end. This weekend, the Oregon Ducks will play their final road game of the season down in Tempe, Arizona, the home of the Arizona State Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils are 3-7 (2-5 in conference play) and aren’t having their best year. This game shouldn’t test Oregon too much, but the Ducks do have a history of dropping games to mediocre Arizona State teams late in the season.

In the big picture, Oregon is in a good spot right now. While the Ducks would definitely benefit from certain teams losing this week, they are still in a position to control their own destiny, but that begins with a definitive win over the Arizona State Sun Devils this weekend.

Below are my picks for the three most important things for the Ducks to do to be successful on Saturday...

Five Sun Devils the Ducks have to pay close attention to on Saturday

If all of the Pac-12 schools were asked if they wanted Cam Skattebo on their roster, all 12 would most likely answer with a question of their own.

Who?

Now if they were asked that same question, all 12 would be jumping up and down with both hands in the air.

The tailback transfer out of Sacramento State chose Arizona State for his next destination and as it turns out, the Sun Devils were the lucky ones to get his services. Not even his old coach at Sac State, Stanford’s Troy Taylor, were so lucky.

Skattebo made the right choice and it’s been Arizona State’s saving grace on offense as he is their most legitimate threat. ASU has been through three quarterbacks, none of which has separated themselves from the other through injuries and poor play.

Arizona State does play hard for the entire 60 minutes and could have two or three more wins if the ball bounced a different way.

If Oregon wants to get out of Tempe with an expected victory, the Ducks will have to pay close attention to these five players...

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

Arizona State may be offensively deficient, but that doesn’t mean the Ducks can just overlook some good pieces to that puzzle.

5 major questions for Oregon Ducks to answer vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

Though this is far from the most competitive point spread we’ve seen the Oregon Ducks have going into a game all season, it’s fair to say that this is going to be among the most important games of the season for Dan Lanning and his team.

Of course, if you were to ask the head coach, every game is the most important game because it’s the next game on the schedule, but when you consider everything that is at stake, from breaking curses, clinching title spots, and potentially rewriting records, there are a lot of things that can happen over the next 48 hours for the Ducks.

Let’s take a deeper dive into those potential scenarios.

Five keys to the game: No. 6 Oregon at Arizona State

It's the day before the day, so it's time to identify some keys for No. 6 Oregon's conference tilt with Arizona State (3-7, 2-5).

The Ducks (9-1, 6-1) will look to continue momentum from four straight wins following the loss to Washington. The Ducks have handled business against Washington State, Utah, California and USC.

After Kenny Dillingham earned a debut win over Southern Utah, the Sun Devils dropped six consecutive games before beating Washington State and UCLA in recent weeks.

Oregon is currently 24.5-point favorites for this game. Kickoff is set for 1 PM and will be aired on FOX.

Each week I identify five things that will be key to Oregon pulling out the win. These are things we believe will be worth your time to follow on Saturday, and that when the smoke clears will prove pivotal to the game's final outcome.

So, here are five keys for the Ducks picking up their 10th victory of the 2023 season over the Arizona State Sun Devils from Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday...

Jackson Powers-Johnson playing above the standard in first year as starting center

Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson is one of seven players nationally still under consideration to win this year's Outland Trophy.

That places Powers-Johnson, in only his first year as a full-time starter, in rare company. Penei Sewell (the 2019 winner) and Jake Fisher (also a semifinalist in 2014) are the only Duck offensive linemen to ever come this far in the award's selection process.

"He's been a guy that with consistency and reps, has continued to get better and better," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said of Powers-Johnson last week. "He's always been a powerful player. He's very athletic at the position, and he moves bodies up front."

It comes as no surprise to his position coach that Powers-Johnson has made waves this fall. The junior is unlike any center he's been around.

As A'lique Terry told DuckTerritory.com in an exclusive interview last week, many centers are intuitive, communicative and reliable, but few are physical specimens too.

Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson is playing his position as good as anybody in the country this year. Here's a deeper look...

5 THINGS TO WATCH: ASU

The No. 6 Oregon football team plays its final regular-season road game of 2023 when the Ducks take the field Saturday afternoon against Arizona State at Mountain America Stadium.

The Ducks (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12) are looking to sustain momentum as they chase berths in the Pac-12 Championship Game and the College Football Playoff.

The Sun Devils (3-7, 2-5) are rebuilding under first-year head coach Kenny Dillingham, who was offensive coordinator at Oregon during Dan Lanning's first season as head coach in 2022.

Oregon leads the all-time series between the two, 20-18, but trails 10-9 in games played at ASU.

The Sun Devils have won two of the last three, with both wins coming in Tempe — although the two teams haven't met since 2019, when an unranked ASU team knocked off an Oregon team ranked No. 6 in the country in late November.

Saturday's game will kick off at 1:05 p.m. PT, and will be televised by FOX. Jeff Levering provides play by play, with former UO coach Mark Helfrich as analyst.

Some storylines to watch when Saturday's game kicks off…
