No. 6 Oregon vs. No. 11 Oregon State: Ducks open as almost 2-TD favorites in Civil War

For many reasons, this is setting up to be one of the most intense rivalry games we’ve ever seen between the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers.

Though a loss by the Beavers on Saturday night made it impossible for Jonathan Smith and his team to get into the Pac-12 Championship game, the Beavers still have a chance to ruin the postseason dreams for their bitter rival, the Ducks, for a second straight year.

They could knock the Ducks out of the title game and end their College Football Playoff aspirations.

This is also the last matchup between Oregon and Oregon State on the schedule. With the Ducks moving to the Big Ten next year, the two aren’t currently scheduled to play in 2024, though that could change.

So it goes without saying that this game on Black Friday will be pretty important. As far as the betting line goes, the Ducks have opening up as early favorites in the matchup.

Here’s a look at the lines, courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook...

RIVALRY SHOWDOWN SET FOR FRIDAY NIGHT IN AUTZEN

Oregon will put a 10-1 record, a trip to the Pac-12 Championship Game and its College Football Playoff hopes on the line when the Ducks host Oregon State on Friday night in the regular-season finale.

UO would clinch its sixth-ever trip to the conference title game with a win, setting up a rematch with No. 5 Washington for a possible CFP berth.

The Ducks are looking to avenge a loss to the Beavers last season in Corvallis that kept them out of the Pac-12 Championship Game. Oregon holds a 67-49-10 lead in the all-time series, and has not lost to the Beavers in Autzen Stadium since an overtime defeat in 2007.

A Win Would...
» Clinch Oregon's spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game for the sixth time in program history, and fourth since 2019.
» Set up the first-ever meeting between Oregon and Washington in the Pac-12 Championship Game.
» Secure an 11-plus win season for the first time since 2019 and eighth time in program history.
» Be Oregon's eighth straight over Oregon State in Eugene, and 13th overall in the last 16 meetings.

Dan Lanning says 2022 loss in Corvallis still 'resonates' with this year's team

Oregon coach Dan Lanning made it clear on Monday night that his team hasn't forgotten what took place a year ago in Corvallis.

The Beavers remain the only obstacle standing in the this team's way of a Pac-12 Championship Game appearance. Discarding the team's in-state rival will mean learning from last season's shortcomings.

“It resonates with every single one of us, and it’s certainly not far from our mind," Lanning said of the 38-34 loss to the Beavers to close the 2022 regular season. "They’re a good team. We’ll have to play really well to compete against them, and you’ve got to play an entire game."

The Ducks built a 31-10 lead midway through the third quarter, only for the Beavers to claw their way back for an improbable win. The defeat knocked the Ducks out of the conference championship game, making way for Utah to meet USC in Las Vegas.

Very little went right for the Ducks after Camden Lewis hit a field goal to create the 21-point cushion. The Ducks turned it over multiple times, experienced special teams gaffes, and most frustratingly were unable to stop the Beaver rush attack...

5 Beavers the Ducks need to pay close attention to in Civil War

Although last week’s loss to Washington took Oregon State out of the running for the Pac-12 title, there’s nothing they want more than to knock the Ducks out of, not only a chance at a conference championship but also a College Football Playoff appearance as well.

Oregon has plenty on the line as the Ducks prepare for the Civil War (5:30 pm, Fox) at Autzen Stadium. With a win, they’ll head to Las Vegas with the intention of avenging the only loss of the season to the Huskies.

Whether this will be the last Civil War in quite some time remains to be seen as the two schools are trying to work out a plan to meet since the Pac-12 is dissolving.

The Beavers are 8-3 on the season and ranked 15th in the country and will be a formidable opponent, just as Oregon found out last season when OSU rallied for a 31-10 deficit to upset the Ducks.

Here are the five Beavers Oregon needs to pay close attention to in order to ensure it plays for the conference title the very next week...

Oregon State still has plenty to play for in this year’s Civil War, including being a spoiler to Oregon’s playoff hopes.

3 Reasons Why The Oregon State Beavers Will Defeat The Oregon Ducks This Weekend

It is here. Civil War week. The final one is for the foreseeable future as Oregon State is still unsure of its schedule, and Oregon heads to the Big Ten.

This is going to be an epic Civil War. Not only is it the final one in the Pac-12 era, but there is SO much on the line here for the Ducks.

Oregon is in a pretty good spot right now to try and sneak into the College Football Playoff. They may be on the outside looking in, last at number six before their win over Arizona State.

A win against Oregon State will catapult them to the Pac-12 championship game in Las Vegas to take on the Washington Huskies. The same Huskies that defeated them a few weeks ago.

The importance of that game can’t be understated. While no Pac-12 team currently has a spot in the College Football Playoff, an Oregon win in that game would round out a really impressive schedule with just one loss.

At that point, Michigan or Ohio State will each have a loss. Florida State lost its starting quarterback, and they still have to play Florida and whoever will be their opponent in the ACC championship game.

There is no reason a Pac-12 team should be left out of the CFP, but Oregon has to at least get to the conference championship game first, and Oregon State could ruin that. Let’s not forget that these two teams despise each other.

We recently wrote about the game’s history and included some epic stories about the rivalry.

In the latest AP Poll, this game will feature #15 vs #6, and there is no reason that the 15th-ranked Beavers can’t pull off the upset.

Here are three reasons why the Beavers will spoil the season of the Oregon Ducks...

3 Reasons Why The Oregon Ducks Will Defeat The Oregon State Beavers This Weekend

On Saturday, the battle for college football supremacy within the state of Oregon will take place as the #6 Oregon Ducks take on the #15 ranked Oregon State Beavers.

This rivalry between Oregon and Oregon State started back in 1894. Oregon has outdone Oregon State historically in this series with a record of 67-49-10.

Ever since their heartbreaking loss to Washington, Oregon has been a nightmare for Pac-12 opponents. They easily walloped the Arizona State Sun Devils 49-13 on Saturday.

Their impressive performances as of late definitely forced the College Football Playoff Selection Committee to keep them in the mix as the season winds down.

However, Oregon State will not be an opponent that Oregon will easily roll through. Last Saturday, they nearly knocked off the #4 Washington

Huskies. Oregon State has no conceivable chance at either the College Football Playoffs or a Pac-12 title.

Therefore, they would relish the opportunity to spoil Oregon’s chances at a College Football Playoff bid.

Oregon has something to lose, while Oregon State has nothing to lose.

Despite this, I believe that Oregon will pull off the victory over its interstate rivals. They are superior on both sides of the ball. Given how they bounced back after losing to Washington, I believe they are a team of destiny.

The oddsmakers are also in agreement that Oregon will beat Oregon State. FanDuel Sportsbook has Oregon as a 13.5-point favorite, while BetMGM has Oregon as a 14-point favorite.

In this piece, I will give three reasons why Oregon will defeat Oregon State in this rivalry game...

Oregon Ducks, Oregon State Beavers bring high stakes, murky future into 127th rivalry game

The Oregon-Oregon State football series started on a chilly November Saturday in 1894 at a field situated east of Community Hall in Corvallis.

The “Lemon-Yellows” had arrived by train from Eugene and were “warmly received” as they cruised into Oregon Agricultural College to play a new sport many were calling gridiron football, an ode to the design of the lines on the playing surface.

Oregon Agricultural College, whose mascot was a coyote named Jimmie, beat the Lemon Yellows handily, 16-0, in front of no spectators.

Afterward, the teams meandered over to Alpha Hall, the women’s dormitory, where they shared a postgame meal.

Oh, how things have changed...

3 Keys to victory for the Oregon Ducks against Oregon State

On Friday evening, the Oregon Ducks will kick things off against the Oregon State Beavers in the final week of the college football regular season.

If Oregon wins, they’ll play themselves into the conference championship game, where a win would give them a chance at the College Football Playoff.

The Ducks found themselves in a similar situation last year ahead of their game against Oregon State. There was no chance for Oregon to make the Playoff, but if they won they would’ve gone to the Pac-12 championship and had a chance at a New Year’s Six bowl game.

But after going up by three touchdowns, the Ducks allowed a 28-3 scoring run from the Beavers and lost the game 38-34.

Below, are my three keys to victory for the Ducks this year against the Beavers, so that they can advance to the Pac-12 Championship...

Seeking to replace fired Mel Tucker, Michigan State poised for move

Michigan State, in the marketplace to replace Mel Tucker since Tucker was fired in September for bringing “public disrespect, contempt and ridicule” upon the university, has Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith as their top target to take over the Spartans program.

“Barring something unforeseen, he is the target,” a source told FootballScoop midweek.

Added another, “Jonathan Smith is the focus. They’ve talked to a lot of guys, but he is who they want.”

5 THINGS TO WATCH: OSU

The Oregon football team has the chance to lock up a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game when the No. 6 Ducks host No. 16 Oregon State in Autzen Stadium on Friday.

The Ducks (10-1, 7-1 Pac-12) are riding their second five-game win streak of the season, and will face a ranked opponent for the fourth time this fall.

The Beavers (8-3, 5-3) have losses to WSU, Arizona and Washington this season; like Oregon, OSU has wins over Utah, California, Colorado and Stanford.

Oregon leads the all-time series between the two, 67-49-10, including 34-21-6 in Eugene. The Ducks have won 12 of the last 15 meetings, although OSU has won two of the last three, including last season in Corvallis.

Oregon State's last regulation win in Eugene was back in 1993.

Friday's game will kick off at 5:40 p.m., and will be telecast by FOX. Jason Benetti will provide play by play, with analysis from Brock Huard and sideline reporting by Allison Williams.

Some storylines to watch come Friday evening…

5 major questions for No. 6 Ducks to answer in Civil War vs. No. 16 Beavers

On Friday night, the Oregon Ducks regular season will come to an end.

We are yet to see if their postseason will start with a game on December 1st, or rather a single bowl game later in the year.

There are a lot of questions to answer for Dan Lanning and his team, particularly after the way that this game went last season up in Corvallis.

While Lanning’s first season in Eugene met a bitter end at the hands of a massive comeback victory for Jonathan Smith and the Beavers,

Oregon enters this final Civil War as conference foes with a lot to lose, and a lot on the table this late in the season.

Will we see the Ducks continue to roll, as they have for most of the season? Or will this rather be a highly contentious rivalry game like we’ve seen in the past?

Time will tell.

Here are some major questions that we want to see answered on Friday night...

Some of the biggest questions that Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks need to answer on Friday vs. the Oregon State Beavers.
