Bo Nix officially sets NCAA record for single-season completion percentage

It wasn’t the main goal going into the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl for Bo Nix and the Oregon Ducks, but it certainly was a potential added bonus when the veteran quarterback decided to play one last game in an Oregon uniform.

Bo Nix has officially broken the record for single-season completion percentage, breaking the mark set by Alabama Crimson Tide QB Mac Jones back in 2020. Jones set the record at 77.36%.

In the Fiesta Bowl against the Liberty Flames, Nix completed 28-of-35 passes for 363 yards and 5 touchdowns. This brought him up to 364-for-470 on the season, a completion percentage of 77.45%.

Coming into the game, Nix was at 77.2%, right behind Jones.

Things looked to be in doubt early on, with Nix only completing 4 of his first 7 passes, and 7 of his first 11, thanks to some uncharacteristic drops from the receivers.

In the second quarter, Nix turned it around though and get back into the flow of things and ultimately break the record...

Tez Johnson breaks Troy Franklin's program record for most receptions in a season

Troy Franklin's history-making 2023 football season saw one of his records fall during the 2024 VRBO Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day. His teammate Tez Johnson broke the Oregon program record for most receptions during a season during the Ducks' game against Liberty.

Johnson broke the record during the 2nd quarter of the 2024 Fiesta Bowl. At the time of the record falling, Oregon led Liberty 24-6. Johnson came into Monday's game with 75 receptions for 1,010 yards and nine touchdowns.

Johnson came into the Fiesta Bowl needing seven catches to surpass Franklin's 81 receptions during the 2023 season. Johnson caught four passes in the first quarter for 68 yards, including 44 yards after the catch.

Johnson and Franklin became Oregon's first wide receiver duo to go over 1,000 yards receiving each in a single season since 1998...

Bo Nix helps deliver Fiesta Bowl blowout to close 2023 season in style

Liberty scored six points on its opening possession, and Oregon didn't lead until the second quarter, but once the Ducks broke through, the game was essentially placed on ice.

The Ducks scored 45 unanswered points in Monday's Fiesta Bowl to pull themselves out of 6-0 hole, and eventually raced to a 45-6 win over Liberty.

The win was the team's 12th of the season, and moves them into special company. Only five other Oregon teams have ever finished a season with 12 or more wins. That mark was previously reached during the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2019 seasons...

Player of the Game: Bo Nix ends his Oregon career with a record-breaking performance

The impact and excitement of bowl games have suffered in the era of opt-outs and transfers, but in the 2023-24 Fiesta Bowl, Bo Nix chose to put on an Oregon Ducks jersey and play one more time.

Nix played exceptionally in the game, and his performance makes him the Ducks Wire player of the game.

After the Ducks started slow in the first quarter, Nix sparked the Oregon offense in the second, throwing four touchdowns in the quarter. Nix finished the game with 363 yards, 5 TDs, and an 80% completion percentage.

In April, Bo Nix will be selected in the NFL Draft, continuing his football career in the pros. He came to Oregon without much expectation — some even thought he’d back up Ty Thompson.

But in two seasons as a Duck, Nix created a legacy as one of the best Oregon QBs ever, capping it off with a stellar performance in the Fiesta Bowl...

Instant Reactions: Ducks outplay Liberty in Fiesta Bowl as Nix, Irving shine

It was Liberty 6, Oregon 0 before Bo Nix touched the ball.

Forty-five straight points later, the Ducks had pasted Liberty 45-6 in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. Nix broke all sorts of school records, including the single-season pass completion percentage record.

He threw for four touchdown passes in the second quarter alone and receiver Tez Johnson made Duck fans forget about Troy Franklin for a moment. Johnson finished the game with 11 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown.

While the offense was moving up and down the field with relative ease, the Oregon defense had one bad possession, the opening possession, but after that, the Flames never had much of a chance.

The Ducks took the spread-option out of the game for the most part and limited quarterback Kaidon Salter’s play-making abilities...

'Thank you Bo;' Duck fans give outpouring of love to Bo Nix after final game as a Duck

There were some mixed reactions back in December of 2021 when Auburn quarterback Bo Nix announced that he would be transferring to the Oregon Ducks.

A little more than two years later, there was no uncertainty when it came to feelings regarding Nix.

As the Oregon QB walked off of the field for the final time in an Oregon uniform at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, a 45-6 win over the Liberty Flames, Duck fans had an outpouring of emotional gratitude to No. 10, who will go down as one of the best passers in Oregon history.

After breaking endless records in Eugene, and finishing among the top Heisman candidates in 2023, it’s clear that Nix left his mark with the Ducks.

As you would expect, the love on social media was abundant for Nix as he took his curtain call Monday afternoon. Here’s just a sample of what Duck fans were saying to Nix to send him off...

Records Fall in Fiesta Bowl Win

Raised as brothers in their youth, Bo Nix and Tez Johnson helped lead the brotherhood of Oregon football to a New Year's Six bowl victory Monday.

Nix capped the most prolific season ever by a UO quarterback and Johnson broke a weeks-old school record for receptions in helping the No. 8 Ducks beat Liberty on Monday in the Fiesta Bowl, 45-6.

Oregon finished the 2023 season at 12-2, the sixth 12-win season in school history — all since 2010.

"This game was about unfinished business," said second-year UO coach Dan Lanning, who is 22-5 with two bowl wins at Oregon. "We said we're writing the last chapter to our book, and we had the pen. And I thought our guys wrote a phenomenal chapter."...

Oregon Football Routs Liberty, 45-6

Liberty flames out after scoring the first points of the game.

The Oregon Ducks took on undefeated Liberty in the Fiesta Bowl to start off the New Year’s Day bowl games. The Ducks outgunned the Flames in every aspect of the game, and Liberty was as soundly defeated as they were expected to be.

Liberty won the toss and took the ball to start the game. On their first drive, Liberty was able to take advantage of an Oregon defense that was slow to wake up, and scored the game’s first points on a 17 yard touchdown throw from Kaidon Salter to Bentley Hanshaw.

Oregon OL Iapani Laloulu on first career start in Fiesta Bowl: 'I've been practicing for this moment'

In his first career start, Iapani Laloulu was outstanding in the Ducks Fiesta Bowl victory.

In the past week, opt-outs during bowl season have become a subject of multiple conversations.

No. 8 Oregon has had its fair share, with Jackson Powers-Johnson, Troy Franklin, and Khyree Jackson deciding not to risk their future in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.

For Powers-Johnson, a unanimous All-American and Rimington Trophy winner, the decision left the Ducks with a sizable void in their prolific offense.

Freshman offensive lineman Iapani Laloulu was the clear choice to replace Powers-Johnson, as he entered games in place of the All-American when the game was a blowout or due to injury. His snaps were limited at center, playing just 45 at center before the Fiesta Bowl.

The moment was not too bright for the budding star, playing 65 snaps and helping lead the Ducks to 584 yards and 45 points en route to a 12-2 season for the eighth-ranked team in the country...

With the win, the Ducks (12-2) secured their first 12-win season since 2019 and for the sixth time overall — all since 2010.

Oregon's defense holds Liberty to fewest rushing yards of the season in Fiesta Bowl win

The game plan was simple for the Oregon Ducks going into the Fiesta Bowl and facing Liberty, the nation's best-rushing offense this season. If Oregon could stop the run and get the Flames behind schedule, they would be in a prime position to win the game.

When the clock hit zero, and the confetti fell onto the football field following Oregon's 45-6 win, the Ducks could credit how they held the Flames to their lowest rushing total of the year for why they won the game.

"The challenge was they're big in the box, and sometimes we can hand it off and get some big yards. We couldn't do that," said Liberty head coach Jamey Chadwell.

Oregon Football Exits The Pac-12 With A Dominating Fiesta Bowl Win

The Oregon football team made its Pac-12 Conference curtain call one to savor.

Now the Ducks are off to the Big Ten Conference and the stability and guaranteed revenue it provides, starting at about $31 million in 2024.

The Ducks can hope their Big Ten entrance is as smooth their Pac-12 exit. Oregon rolled to decisive a 45-6 victory over mismatched Liberty in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on Monday, the Ducks’ final Pac-12 game in the 108-year history of a league that quickly disintegrated in the absence of a coherent media rights agreement this summer...

Bo Nix, Tez Johnson make for special story in Oregon's Fiesta Bowl win

After putting the final punctuation mark on one of the best seasons in program history Monday, Oregon coach Dan Lanning reflected back on "one of the easiest recruiting deals ever" and one of the most significant for this Ducks team.

"Bo [Nix] walks into my office and says, 'Hey, I think we have this guy who can maybe play for us,'" Lanning said, telling the story.

"It was like, 'Okay, what do you think? We're going to have to recruit our tail off? What's it going to take?'

Bo says, 'No, no, no, Oregon is his dream school.' And today, that guy that walked away with Oregon being his dream school set the single-season record for receptions for an Oregon receiver. Big accomplishment for Tez [Johnson] and nice recruiting job by Bo."

Nix and Johnson, who were raised together and consider each other brothers, delivered one of the great stories of bowl season while sharing the spotlight in No. 8-ranked Oregon's 45-6 Fiesta Bowl win over previously-unbeaten No. 23 Liberty in Glendale, Arizona...

Report Card: Ducks breeze through the final exam of the 2023 season

It’s said that if you study hard enough the final for a class should be easy and you’ll receive the grade you deserve.

The Oregon Ducks football team took their final exam on New Year’s Day at the Fiesta Bowl and it was obvious they studied hard. The end result was the Ducks breezing through that test to the tune of a 45-6 victory over the Liberty Flames.

Oregon was able be in celebratory mode for most of the fourth quarter as quarterback Bo Nix and tailback Bucky Irving took much-deserved curtain calls as they both called it a career at the University of Oregon.

Every unit played well and their grades will reflect it for the last report card of this season that saw the Ducks finish 12-2...

Snap Count Takeaways: Major notes from Oregon's usage report in Vrbo Fiesta Bowl

The final game of the year has come and gone for the Oregon Ducks, and it gives us one last opportunity to use a tool that offers great value if you care to learn more about the team that you follow.

The usage report. There are arguably two games every year where the snap counts and usage report give a great bit of insight into the team — the first game and the last game.

While the first game of the year provides the first really great look at a depth chart, the last game of the year often portends to what is to come down the road, with a lot of young players on the roster getting a chance to step into big spots due to transfers and opt-outs from older players.

For the Ducks, the Fiesta Bowl performance against the Liberty Flames didn’t provide as much of that as we might have initially anticipated, but it did offer a look at how some young players might step into key roles going forward.

Later this week, we will be going through a usage report for the entire season, but for now, let’s take a look at the single game snap counts one last time for the 2023 season...
