Umlandt’s Dominance Fuels Ducks Win

 

SAN FRANCISCO — Ian Umlandt was dominant on the mound in No. 18 Oregon baseball’s 7-2 victory over San Francisco on Monday as the sophomore hurler gave up just four hits and one earned run in a complete-game performance. Umlandt’s outing was only the fifth complete game with no walks in Oregon baseball’s modern era.

 

After surrendering an unearned run to the Dons (17-24, 1-11 WCC) in the bottom of the first and loading the bases on a hit by pitch, Umlandt locked in to secure the final out of the inning and the first of 17-straight hitters he would retire as the game carried on. The Sherwood, Ore., native kept the bases clean through to the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing the Ducks’ (28-12, 11-7 Pac-12) bats to build a 5-1 advantage.

 

Leading the charge offensively was third baseman Carter Garate who logged a career-high five RBI on two hits, one of which being a two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth to extend the lead 7-1. Umlandt came out again for the ninth inning, and despite allowing a run the sophomore finished what he started by striking out the final batter of the day to earn his fourth win of the season and the first complete game of his collegiate career.

How It Happened: The Dons got to the Ducks early after a throwing error led to runners on first and third with one out. A single on the following pitch resulted in a 1-0 lead for San Francisco, but Umlandt got out of the jam by forcing an infield pop up.

 

In the top of the second, Maddox Molony got things started with a single to right field before Drew Smith and Mason Neville each worked walks to load the bases with nobody out. An infield knock by Bryce Boettcher scored Molony for the Ducks’ first run of the day, and Garate laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Smith and give the Ducks the lead.

 

Umlandt took the game over in the bottom half of the inning as he retired the side and did so again in each of the following four innings. The Oregon bats struck again in the fourth as Garate knocked a two-RBI single to right field to grow a three-run lead.

 

After Jacob Walsh earned his way on base with a walk in the fifth, Anson Aroz stepped in to pinch hit and ripped a RBI double to center field, putting the Ducks on top 5-1. With Umlandt continuing to deal, Garate took the opportunity to add to the lead in the eighth inning with a homer to center field.

 

San Francisco managed its way onto the scoreboard again in the bottom of the ninth with a triple followed by a sacrifice bunt, but Umlandt froze the final batter of the night for his ninth strikeout and put the game to rest.

 

Notables: Umlandt retired 17 straight batters from the first to seventh inning and 19 of 20 through the seventh … Umlandt threw the first complete game for Oregon since Logan Mercado went the distance against Stanford on April 15, 2023 … Umlandt has registered a career-high nine strikeouts in two of his last three appearances … Garate logged his third multiple-RBI game of the season and 13th of his career … Molony notched his eighth multi-hit game in his first 19 starts … Aroz earned his 11th multiple-hit game of the season and 13th of his career.
