Oregon baseball is 8-0 entering a big weekend in Las Vegas, where the Ducks will face Arizona, UC Irvine and Vanderbilt in an early-season measuring stick.

Oregon baseball heads to Las Vegas this weekend carrying more than just an unbeaten record. The Ducks are 8-0 after sweeping both George Mason and Youngstown State, the degree of difficulty rises sharply with a three-game round robin against Arizona on Friday, UC Irvine on Saturday, and Vanderbilt on Sunday at Las Vegas Ballpark for the Live Like Lou Las Vegas College Baseball Classic

That is exactly the kind of test head coach Mark Wasikowski welcomes for a young team looking to make a splash early into its season.

"As we go, the competition improves, which is great," Wasikowski said. "But so far, the guys have answered the tests that have been put in front of them. Every practice day or game day is an opportunity for us to assess and improve."

This will be a step-up in competition, but not as much as we thought it would be. Last year Arizona won our Regional, won the Super-Regional and was in the CWS. This year they are 1-7...and reeling. The word is--they have good-to-great pitching, but can't hit a lick. We will be facing a good pitcher Friday night at 6:00 PM PST.

Cal-Irving hovered between No. 12 and No. 15 in the nation most of last year...but is unranked this year at 6-3. They lost a series to Cal 2-1, split with Grand Canyon and beat Sacramento State 3-0 in that series. Meh.

Vanderbilt is 7-2 and unranked. They lost a toughie to No. 18 TCU, 5-4, got kicked by Oklahoma State 11-1, and cruised through Marist, Evansville, and Eastern Michigan. More meh.

All three teams could beat us on a given day, but I have the most confidence in Oregon's pitching in a decade. We have a shot at a very good weekend.. We are ranked No. 9 by Perfect Game, but the one I follow the most is D1 Baseball, and the Ducks are unranked with them...so far.

The number of Oregon fans watching online will be sparse; the stream is through D1 Baseball, and they charge $30.00 for four tournaments...of which three I have no interest in. So I am paying through the nose for my devotion to Our Beloved Diamond Ducks, and will report to you the action, but...

The bastards who run this streaming do NOT have a fast-forward feature. They have a ten second rewind, (good) but not a fast-forward. This is important because in between innings I would go write up the last inning and come back way behind on the stream. But I would catch up as I would hit the ten-second fast forward between pitches, mound conferences, etc. and get caught up.

This means I HAVE to watch it live and not leave it. I can post scores after innings from my cell phone, but no game-action and descriptions this weekend. After the games--I will put up the press release about the games with more information. Let's Go Ducks!
