Guest Axel No. 48 Share Posted March 13, 2022 (edited) A four-run deficit is certainly not insurmountable for these new Ducks under Coach Mark Wasikowski. It's amazing what players can do when you allow them to grind out at-bats, see a lot of pitches, and enable them to build confidence in their hitting abilities. One of my biggest criticisms of ex-coach George Horton was that he inserted himself into a game far too often, taking the bat away from player after player, and forcing them to bunt. Horton was in effect saying to his players, "I have no confidence in your hitting." In the process, Horton gave away unnecessary outs and by playing small ball, he greatly reduced the frequency of scoring big innings. In 2015, Horton was quoted as saying, "You're looking at a guy that believes in the bunting game." That small-minded philosophy resulted in a sixth-place conference finish that year, and in the next four years, the Ducks placed eighth, eighth, eighth, and ninth in the Pac-12. It's pointless I suppose to bash Horton when he's been gone for three years, but my main point is that I hope the Ducks never again hire a coach who is devoted to playing small ball. Horton's Ducks had a negative run differential during his final five seasons. Yes, you need pitching and defense to win championships, but you also need to score some damned runs. Coach Wasikowski understands the necessity for a balanced attack, and he smartly embraces hitting the long ball as an offensive weapon.
