Max Torres' Take: What to Make of Oregon's Splash During the Early Signing Period

Hitting on all the action that unfolded on a historic day in Oregon football recruiting.

I couldn't write fast enough to keep up with the seven commitments that Oregon would land on Wednesday to kick off the early signing period.

Now that things have slowed down just a bit, I wanted to touch on some of the biggest names that dominated the storylines of Oregon football recruiting and talk about what they mean for Dan Lanning and the Ducks.

Where the newest Ducks rank amongst Oregon's highest-rated commits in school history

The Oregon Ducks have had an eventful week, with the long run-up to a dramatic signing day that landed one of the top recruiting classes in school history.

At the moment, the Ducks have the No. 11 recruiting class in the nation, with a chance that it could get a lot better before all is said and done.

In the end, it left Lanning with a couple of the best players to sign with the Ducks in program history with Jurrion Dickey and Matayo Uiagalelei.

So where do they rank among the best of the best to ever commit to the Ducks?

Jon Gold: Dan Lanning and Ducks take flight with one wild Early Signing Day

‘Twas the night before the night before the night before the night before night before Christmas, and not much was stirring with the Oregon football recruiting class. The work had already been done, and even Dan Lanning thought the results were in. When Duck fans fell asleep Tuesday night, they were happy if pensive, satisfied but not overwhelmed.

By the end of Wednesday, the Ducks were kissing the sky.

This article was written yesterday before the Bowen flip, however it is a fun read...I think you will enjoy Gold's descriptions of the day's events.

Can someone explain the NIL process a little bit more? It seems like it is still the wild wild west so trying to wrap my head around it.

Are the coaches and University able to discuss NIL and offer them deals specifically? Or is it a "3rd party" group that represents the University and offers them the contract? Are these numbers available to see or does it not disclosed? Is it then a yearly contract that can be pulled or extended based on performance within the program? Are there any restrictions at all?

Obviously having Uncle Phil really helped with this recruiting class as he has the biggest pocket book out there and is set on winning a Natty when he is still alive.

Oregon hits Texas for record number of signees with a focus for more in years to come

The Oregon Ducks signed five players from the state of Texas in the class of 2023, a record number for Oregon as a program. It's also the same number of prospects from the Lone Star State to sign with Oregon between the 2018 and 2022 recruiting classes.

Oregon expects the Ducks to continue to his a talent-rich state for more and more talent with head coach Dan Lanning at the helm.

"I think we're gonna lean on some of our comfortability, and we have a lot of coaches that are familiar with that area," said Lanning.

RELATIONSHIPS KEY TO TOP-10 CLASS

When Dan Lanning was named UO football coach in December 2021, he had just days to secure commitments to the recruiting class that would begin signing that month. That the Ducks ended up signing a top-25 class despite a coaching change said something about the relationships Lanning and his staff could build in a short time.

This week the UO football program added 30 newcomers to the roster, a class that can be enhanced during another signing period in February. At least two national scouting services rated Oregon's class among the top 10 in the country as of Friday, when the signing period ended, and the class included multiple five-star players for just the second time in the current era of national recruiting rankings.

The Oregon football team this week signed a class of recruits ranked as high as No. 8 nationally by national scouting services.
