Ducks aiming for first desert road sweep since 2019 in ranked meeting with UA on Sunday

Earning wins in the desert is rarely easy. Flying north back to Eugene with two has been a real rarity for

the Ducks even during the highs of head coach Kelly Graves' coaching tenure.

This year's 18th-ranked Oregon team will aim to become the third under Graves to sweep the Zona schools

on the road when it squares off with the 15th-ranked Wildcats on Sunday evening.

A victory would move the Ducks into sole possession of second place in the conference assuming No. 2

Stanford takes care of Cal on Sunday too.

TOP-20 TILT AHEAD IN TUCSON

No. 18 Oregon seeks a 2-0 weekend, as the Ducks take on No. 15 Arizona at McKale Center Sunday to wrap up a two-game road trip.

UO seeks its first win at Arizona since Jan. 12, 2020. Oregon has won 10 of the last 14 meetings overall and lead the all-time series, 45-31. The Ducks and Wildcats split the season series a year ago, each winning at home.

Sunday's game will mark the seventh time in the last eight meetings both teams have been ranked in the Associated Press top-25 poll.

Oregon women’s basketball renews rivalry with Arizona with both in search of top 20 win

A series dominated by Oregon from 2017-20 has intensified dramatically since Arizona ascended to the Women’s Final Four and tonight will be seventh time in eight games they meet as ranked teams, with Arizona winning three of the last four including the past two in Tucson.

The Ducks beat the Wildcats 68-66 in overtime in Eugene last season in a matchup that provided drama during and after the game, as the animus between the teams was aired publicly, with Arizona coach Adia Barnes and guard Shaina Pellington accusing Oregon’s Kelly Graves of cursing at Barnes during the game.

No. 18 Ducks seeking desert road sweep against No. 15 Arizona

Oregon (12-3, 3-1) has won its last two games over USC and Arizona State to move to 3-1 in conference play.

Their most recent victory came two days ago when they flew past the Sun Devils in the second half to an 82-62 win.

That acted as just their second road game and win of the season. Oregon has not swept the Arizona schools since 2019.

The Wildcats (13-2, 3-1) have given the Ducks fits on their last few trips to Tucson, beating them by an average of 15.5 points

per contest. Arizona has lost twice this season including a stunning 27-point loss to Kansas in early December. The team's

other loss came earlier this week in Palo Alto when Stanford bested them by 16.

Foul on the VanSlooten drive, but of course it doesn't called because Arizona fouls all the time.  I hate that team, always have their best shooting night against us.

Ducks battle Wildcats, but fall short in Tucson for second Pac-12 defeat

The game changed advantages like a seesaw with 21 lead changes, nine total ties, and neither team

ever holding a double-digit lead. Ultimately, Arizona did more when it mattered most, winning the final

two minutes to hold on for a 79-71 victory before a packed crowd at the McKale Center.

The Wildcats forced a season-high 20 Oregon turnovers. Those giveaways led to 16 Arizona points and

changed the tenor of a game where the Ducks shot 52.7 percent from the field, but failed to come up victorious.

Oregon women’s basketball commits 20 turnovers in loss at Arizona

Even when you out-shoot a team and are even on the boards on the road, turning it over 20 times is a recipe for defeat.

The Wildcats (14-2, 4-1) turned to their wealth of experience after Oregon tied the game at 67 to close out on a 12-4 run in the final 3:03.

Apparently the rules were changed to allow #25 (Reese) to set a moving screen virtually every trip down the court.

DUCKS DROP TOP-20 MATCHUP IN DESERT

"I'm not sure we've played with the intensity that we need to late in the game — like, 'We've gotta get a stop,"

UO coach Kelly Graves said. "At the end, there were a couple of execution things we didn't do.

We played good enough to win this game. This is a great environment. A good show for ESPN, a good showcase

of the Pac-12, great crowd. This is a tough environment to come play and I thought for the most part kids handled it well."

It's the same thing all the time for Arizona, they foul every possession so that refs are forced to not call anything since they would foul out of the game, helps as well that Barnes whines the entire game and post game if they lose.

Simple fact though is win the game if Arizona doesn't shoot out of their minds from 3 or if we don't make about 10 boneheaded weak passes.

Oregon women’s basketball leading scorer Grace VanSlooten hurts right foot in loss to Arizona

Oregon Ducks forward Grace VanSlooten twice left Sunday’s loss at Arizona with foot injuries and did not return from the second.

It was not immediately clear the severity of the freshman’s injury, though VanSlooten did not have a significant limp when she walked

out of the Oregon locker room with the team’s athletic trainer following the 79-71 loss.

Oregon women’s basketball guard Ahlise Hurst cleared to return from left leg injury

Oregon Ducks guard Ahlise Hurst will be back on the court next week.

Oregon coach Kelly Graves said Hurst, who is averaging 5.6 points and 1.2 rebounds this season, hadn’t practiced

since the injury. So he chose not to play her for the first time in nine days against No. 15 Arizona on the road.

The senior guard, who injured her left leg during UO’s loss to UCLA on Dec. 30, was cleared to return to play before Sunday’s game at Arizona, which won 79-71, though her lower left leg was still wrapped.

Ducks fall in AP Poll following Sunday's loss in Tucson

For the second straight week, the Ducks dropped a game in conference play, and just like last week,

they've fallen in the Associated Press Poll because of it. Oregon comes in at No. 21 in Monday's updated poll —

three spots worse than they were before falling to Arizona on Sunday evening.

The team has now lost conference games to Arizona and UCLA, and non-league games to North Carolina and

Ohio State. All four of those teams remain inside the top 25 in the latest AP Poll.
