Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 2 Share Posted February 17, 2023 Oregon baseball embracing new style of play from international players Rikuu Nishida, Sabin Ceballos This season, things might look a little different. Oregon not only has a stash of talented players, but it also welcomes different styles of play from other countries, which’ll inevitably shift things around in the lineup. The Ducks have two new faces from overseas on their team: Rikuu Nishida from Japan and Sabin Ceballos from Puerto Rico. Nishida is what many might describe as an “old school” baseball player. In the modern age, so much emphasis is placed on drawing walks and hitting home runs, with less focus on making contact and stealing bases. Oregon is certainly no exception, with power hitters like Anthony Hall, Kenyon Yovan and Gabe Matthews coming through the program. But Nishida brings a flavor to the top of the order that the Ducks were missing last year. Then there’s Ceballos, who plays just about anywhere on the field, including catcher. His versatility is admirable in itself, but he also brings a sense of elation and exhilaration to how he plays the game and celebrates his achievements. He’s a big guy at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, but he can still play a smooth left side of the infield. “I think the fans are really gonna like Rikuu. I think they’re gonna really like Sabin,” Wasikowski said. “We’ve got an interesting locker room this year. They’re coming from different parts of the world, and they play like it.” Click here to read this highly recommended article from the Daily Emerald. OUT OF MANY, ONE TEAM OF DUCKS When the World Baseball Classic begins in early March, rooting interests in the Oregon locker room will be split. No less than four countries represented in the World Baseball Classic also are represented on the UO roster, which opens its 2023 season by hosting Xavier in PK Park on Friday at 3 p.m. There are Ducks from the United States of course, and from Canada, and also from Puerto Rico and Japan. "Having that kind of diversity in the locker room, it's so cool," veteran UO outfielder Tanner Smith said. "Everybody obviously has a different background, and a different way they came about the game. But it's really cool." Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 5 Share Posted February 18, 2023 Baseball recap: Ducks walk off Xavier 3-2 in season-opening victory If the 2023 Oregon Ducks baseball season opener is any indication on how this year is going to go for Mark Wazikowski’s team, it’s not going to be for the faint of heart. Alabama transfer Owen Diodati hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to score fellow newcomer Rikuu Nishida and the Ducks grabbed the season-opening win 3-2 over Xavier. Baseball recap: Ducks walk off Xavier 3-2 in season-opening victory DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Oregon waited until the ninth inning to take the lead, but the Ducks were able to walk it off to beat Xavier 3-2. Oregon begins new campaign with a walk off win over Xavier Opening day signified a new season for the Ducks. Yet, Oregon's 3-2 walk-off win over Xavier was delivered from a face the Musketeers knew all too well. Outfielder Owen Diodati walked off the Musketeers for the second straight season, this time for the Ducks. In 2022, Diodati hit a two-run home run to put a "W" in the win column for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Fast forward to 2023, and Diodati once again came through in the clutch, scoring Rikuu Nishida on a sacrifice fly into left field for the victory. "I guess it's just kind of been fate that I've been put in that situation twice," said Diodati after the celebrations. "I stressed the same things in both situations, just don't try and do too much and know the situation. A little bit different today with the bases loaded, and no outs, it was a little bit of a different situation last year. Here, I got to two strikes, they've kind of been slider heavy the last couple of ABs. In that situation, get the ball in the air, they had five infielders going, just don't try and do too much." Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 20 Share Posted February 22, 2023 Young pitchers shine in Oregon’s season-opening sweep of Xavier There’s still a long way to go, of course. But after the Ducks secured a four-game sweep of the Xavier Musketeers, initial indications are positive — particularly in the pitching department. There’s no sugarcoating that the Ducks were going to need their freshman pitchers to step up. An already uncertain pitching staff has been beleaguered by injuries to Isaac Ayon and RJ Gordon, leaving a boatload of freshmen to slide in and prove their worth. This weekend, they did just that. Eight freshmen combined to throw 23 of Oregon’s 34 innings, giving up only two earned runs, total. Three more innings were pitched by transfers, leaving just eight innings thrown by members of last year’s team. And four of those eight innings were pitched by Logan Mercado, a reliever who isn’t used to being in the rotation yet. This staff has an almost entirely new look — and so far, it’s worked. Three games later, it’s back to the drawing board after the Ducks fell on the wrong side of a sweep to UC Santa Barbara. It was a weekend where they were outscored 20-3, scratching across just one run in Saturday’s 18-inning doubleheader. “There’s a lot of disappointment,” head coach Mark Wasikowski said. “We didn’t play well. We know we didn’t play well. It was really obvious.” For the younger players on the team, there’s been a learning curve. They found success the first weekend of the season — exceeded expectations, even. But Wasikowski understands, as he’s said from the beginning, that young pitchers are going to have their ups and downs against tougher competition. This weekend, Oregon will play four games against the University of San Diego. Unlike the previous two series, this one will be held on four consecutive days, with no doubleheader. And unlike the Ducks, the Toreros are off to a hot start with the bat. They’re 5-1-1, with a rare tie coming in a wild 16-16 game against Nebraska.
