Oregon will look for important road sweep with Saturday matchup at Arizona State

The Oregon men's basketball team knew going into the weekend that getting a road sweep of the Arizona schools would be difficult but that a road split would be more than enough progress to keep their NCAA hopes still alive. That goal is still attainable, but now the Ducks enter a game Saturday night at Arizona State in a must-win situation.

Oregon sits 59th in the NCAA Net Rankings, and Saturday night is one of just two remaining games against Quad 1 opponents. Oregon is 2-5 in those games this season and will need to win both to ensure they still have a chance at an at-large bid.

Can Oregon men’s basketball respond to loss at Arizona with win at Arizona State?

The Ducks (13-10, 7-5 Pac-12) have won following each of their prior five losses and haven’t dropped consecutive games since the PK85 in November.

But the Sun Devils (16-7, 7-5) have taken the last three in the series, including a 90-73 rout at Matthew Knight Arena on Jan. 12, and will look for the season sweep tonight.

“It’s really important, getting the team together, learning from a loss, not taking it and letting it effect the next couple of games,” guard Will Richardson said. “Big bounce back, it’s just three days. This is part of playing in the Pac-12 on the road.”

MBB Recap: Oregon Ducks pick up critical 75-70 road win over Arizona State

After a tough loss to the Arizona Wildcats on Thursday night, the Ducks were able to pull out a scrappy, ugly, and hard-fought 75-70 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils.

It certainly wasn’t pretty, but it was good enough to keep Oregon’s hopes of getting an at-large bid in the NCAA March Madness Tournament alive and well.

This game was back and forth for much of the contest, and while the Ducks were able to build a 10-point lead in the second half, ASU fought hard to make it tight down the stretch, cutting the lead to one with under a minute remaining.

Oregon basketball slides up in KenPom and NET rankings following win over ASU

In a season marred with injuries and disappointing results, Oregon's play has been turning some corners in the last few weeks. Oregon has won five of its previous seven games, including a home sweep of the mountain schools (Colorado and Utah) and a split of the Arizona schools on the road this weekend.

The loss to No. 5 Arizona won't likely affect the Ducks' chances of making the tournament, but a win over Arizona State just may.

After the win, Oregon moved to No. 52 in the KenPom Power Ratings, moving up from No. 59. Oregon, immediately after the game, was ranked No. 54. However, with the handful of games still finishing on the west coast, Oregon jumped the extra two spots.
