Oregon's lineup will lean on previous experiences as they host No. 16 UCLA

Conference play has arrived for the Oregon Ducks, as they take an 8-3 record into a three-game homestand against No. 16 UCLA (9-2).

The Bruins' lone losses of the season came against No. 7 Vanderbilt, one of the nation's best programs, while on the road. After being picked to finish second behind Stanford in the Pac-12, UCLA heads to Eugene for the first time since 2021 as the Ducks look to regain their spot in the top 25.

As Oregon's offense began to turn a corner in the final two games of their four-game sweep of San Diego, combining for 18 runs, they'll now face their toughest test of the season in the Bruins pitching staff.

UCLA, as a team, sports a 1.67 ERA over 97 innings pitched, with 125 strikeouts and 23 walks. Opponents are hitting a measly .201 against the Bruins and have mustered up only 18 earned runs all season.

Oregon baseball using previous Pac-12 experience to prepare for opener against No. 16 UCLA

The true test is about to begin for Oregon baseball.

The Ducks have gotten off to a solid 8-3 start against three capable non-conference schools. This weekend, they’ll face off against their first

Pac-12 opponent of the year, and it won’t be a luxurious matchup. They’ll be taking on No. 16 UCLA, a team off to a hot start with dominant pitching.

But the Ducks know they’ve been here before.

“They’re a Pac-12 school, so everyone’s gonna be good,” Oregon pitcher Jace Stoffal said. “Even the worst record in the Pac-12 is still a good school.”

UCLA pitchers Alonzo Tredwell and Kelly Austin have posted ERAs of 1.06 and 1.17, respectively. Along with a strong bullpen, the Bruins own a 1.78 team ERA, limiting opponents to a .206 batting average while striking out 136 in 106 innings. It resulted in a 10-2 start to the 2023 campaign.

Oregon begins conference play with victory over UCLA; Owen Diodati connects on first homer of the season

PK Park and the Oregon Ducks (9-3, 1-0) hosted their toughest test of the season, beginning Pac-12 play against No. 16 UCLA (10-3, 0-1) in a three-game series.

Friday marked game one of the series, as the Ducks pulled away thanks to the long ball, coming out ahead 6-2 in an ideal start to the weekend.

“I saw good pitching and clean baseball,” said head coach Mark Wasikowski after the game. “I thought we played a well rounded game, and we played good defense, timely hitting, moved the ball around the field. That first run was just really good situational hitting and then we had a couple big swings. The swings, off that guy, probably the most impressive thing were the best swings were all to the middle or opposite field.”

Live Updates: Oregon baseball shoots for series victory over No. 16 UCLA

Oregon will send freshman RHP Leo Uelmen (1-1, 2.51 ERA) to the mound, squaring off against UCLA's ace, RHP Alonzo Tredwell (2-0, 1.06 ERA).

"The guy's got a bazooka, and he'll run the ball up to 96-97 miles an hour with a heck of a breaking ball," said head coach Mark Wasikowski on Tredwell. "People need to come out and watch that guy pitch, and hopefully, the Ducks beat him. I mean, he's really good, and we're gonna need to be on our game not only against him but their Sunday starters really good too. I mean, UCLA has done a nice job of accumulating pitching, and coach Savage is very good at what he does. And so we need to be on point for us to be able to beat good programs, and they're a good program."

The Ducks' offense did its job in game one of the three-game series, sending home six runs, including a pair of two-run homers from Jacob Walsh and Owen Diodati. Both came on opposite field blasts, something the Ducks have been working on the last two series. Oregon will look to put the ball in play as often as possible on Saturday, as Tredwell sports a 26/4 strikeout-to-walk ratio this year.

Oregon's late comeback bid falls short as No. 16 UCLA takes game two, evens series at one apiece

Oregon’s five-game winning streak came to a close on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 16 UCLA Bruins (11-3, 1-1) continued their homerun parade at PK Park, staving off the Ducks' late comeback attempt and winning 8-7.

Trailing 8-2 heading into the ninth, Oregon put together a five-run rally to make the game interesting, starting with a double from Jackson Jaha, his first career hit.

Jaha scored on a Tanner Smith single before Oregon hit three straight home runs from Ceballos, Cowley, and Walsh.

However, the late-inning comeback effort from the Ducks ultimately fell short. As the game tying run, Colby Shade laced a ball to right field before UCLA’s JonJon Vaughns made a diving catch to end the rally.

Ninth-inning rally falls short

Trailing 8-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, freshman Jackson Jaha sparked the Ducks' rally with a one-out pinch-hit double in his first career at-bat. Tanner Smith made it 8-3 with an RBI single that scored Jaha before Rikuu Nishida struck out to put the Bruins (11-3, 1-1 Pac-12) one out away from evening the series at one game apiece after the Ducks won the series opener on Friday night.

Oregon (10-4, 1-1 Pac-12) would not go quietly. Sabin Ceballos crushed a ball to dead center field for a two-run home run cutting UCLA's lead to three. Two pitches later, Drew Cowley made it a two-run game with a solo shot over the right-center wall. Jacob Walsh followed with another bomb over the right-center field wall.

It looked like Oregon would keep the rally going. Colby Shade lined a shot into the gap in right-center field, but UCLA right-fielder JonJon Vaughns made a sliding catch to rob Shade of extra bases and end the game.

Ducks drop game three in blowout fashion; lose first Pac-12 series to No. 16 UCLA

Sunday marked an opportunity for Oregon to pick up an early-season series win against a ranked opponent in No. 16 UCLA.

Instead, it was the Bruins who came out like the unranked team and never looked back, walloping the Ducks 16-0 and taking the final two games of the series with a combined score of 22-7.

With freshman Jackson Pace getting the start, the game had a rather ominous beginning, as the first pitch was hammered to left-center field by Cody Scrier for a double.

From there, Oregon’s winning outlook would continue to deteriorate as UCLA added four runs in the first inning. JonJon Vaughns, who’s been a thorn in Oregon’s side this series, lofted a fly ball to left where Tanner Smith severely misplayed the ball, allowing for a bases-clearing double with two outs.

“That was a big play, wasn’t it?” said Wasikowski after the game. “Getting out of the first inning, giving up one run, and then missing a routine flyball and it turning into a big inning, it was a big deal. I thought we lost some counts and some other things, but at the end of the day, we didn’t prepare our club well to play today. And that’s our fault.”

Ducks drop series to UCLA

Oregon fell behind early and then could not muster any offense to come back in a 16-0 loss to No. 13 UCLA in a Pac-12 Conference game on Sunday at PK Park.

UCLA (12-3, 2-1 Pac-12) picked up the series victory with back-to-back wins after Oregon (9-5, 1-2 Pac-12) won the series opener on Friday.

How It Happened: The Bruins scored four runs in the first and five more in the second to build a 9-0 lead. Oregon starter Jackson Pace lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing eight runs (7 earned) on four hits with three walks.

UCLA added five more in the fifth and two in the ninth to wrap up the scoring.

Oregon was held to three hits. Rikuu Nishida broke up Kelly Austin's no-hit bid in the fourth with a leadoff double. Jacob Walsh added two hits, a double in the fifth and a single in the seventh.
