Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 13 Share Posted March 18, 2023 Ducks drop fourth straight, strikeout 17 times in loss to Washington State Oregon’s losing streak moves to four straight after dropping the first game of a three-game series against Washington State, 7-1. The loss moves the Ducks to 9-7 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. During this four-game losing streak, Oregon has been outscored by its opponents (UCLA, Niagara, and Washington State) 39-13. As pitching woes highlighted the three losses before Friday night, Oregon turned to its veteran on the rotation, Jace Stoffal. Stoffal was coming off the best start of his career, striking out nine Bruins over four innings. The Ducks looked for Stoffal to get them back on track, but early on, it was evident that command issues would plague them again. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 26 Share Posted March 19, 2023 Oregon offense explodes with 14-8 win over Washington State After a fairly uneventful series opener, Saturday’s game was anything but. Oregon and Washington State went back and forth for much of the game, but it was Oregon that prevailed, beating the Cougars 14-8 in an offense-dominated contest at Bailey-Brayton Field. Six Ducks had multiple hits. Drew Cowley reached base five times, while Gavin Grant hit a grand slam and Tanner Smith had four hits and three RBIs. They combined for 17 hits and nine walks as a team. It ended the Ducks’ four-game losing streak, rejuvenating life into a squad that had struggled to keep the energy up over the last few games. "We've been pushing a big boulder uphill the last couple games," Smith said. "And today, we really wanted to come out and slow everything down, and really capture momentum every pitch and every play. I think we did a really good job with that." Read how the Ducks' bats finally came around in the Daily Emerald. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 39 Share Posted March 20, 2023 Ducks score 12 unanswered, overcome six-run deficit and earn series win over Washington State It didn't look ideal early on as Oregon looked to win a series over one of the surprise Pac-12 teams in Washington State. The same problems that had plagued the Ducks early on in the season resurfaced as the Cougars scored seven runs on three hits in the first, helped by multiple free passes. However, Oregon responded incredibly well, scoring 12 unanswered runs en route to a 13-7 victory. Jackson Pace started the game for Oregon and failed to get out of the first inning, finishing his outing with five earned runs, seven total runs, three walks, and one hit batter. It was the second straight start for Pace where he struggled with command after three excellent starts to start the season. Oregon (11-7, 3-3 Pac-12) received a stellar performance from a trio of bullpen arms to seal the victory on Sunday. Washington State found itself in an early lead in the first inning despite a leadoff home run from Rikuu Nishida. The Cougars took a 7-1 lead in the bottom half of the opening frame after scoring seven runs off Oregon starter Jackson Pace. The Washington State bats would go cold from there, adding just two more hits throughout the contest against the Duck bullpen arms. Matthew Grabmann was the first to appear in relief, pitching three scoreless innings and matching a career-high with four strikeouts. Oregon began to chip away at the Cougars' lead in the fourth.
