Oregon Previews provide perfect weather for distance racing as Oregon Track and Field team opens its outdoor season

As darkness fell and the temperature dropped, the lights were bright at Hayward Field for the first time this year as the Oregon Previews kicked off the 2023 outdoor season on Friday night. Day one featured the women’s and men’s 10,000 meters.

The 25 laps for the women were paced by junior Izzy Thorton-Bott, who finished ninth in the mile at the NCAA indoor championships earlier in March. Eight women toed the start line, including regional cross-country qualifiers Harper McClain, Malia Pivec and Maddy Elmore.

After taking the lead at the end of the third lap, Emilie Girard led the pack in the first mile with a time of 5 minutes and 22.93 seconds. Pivec began falling behind the lead pack 12 laps in, with Thorton-Bott urging her to keep up. Thornton-bott pumped her arm in the air every time she passed the finish line, causing the Hayward crowd to clap, yelp and cheer on the athletes.

Welcome back: Oregon’s star sprinter Micah Williams

While he didn’t end 2022 with the individual goals he had in mind, Williams still qualified for the Team USA men’s 4x100M relay team, albeit as a reserve.

Williams talked about the guidance he received from the USATF veterans.

“I had Fred Kerley, Noah [Lyles], Grant Holloway and all of them were all great mentors,” Williams said. “They were telling me certain tips about the game and what to expect. Even Fred will comment on my stuff today and help me, that’s the biggest thing.”

Tune in to see if Williams, the “Quad God” – a name given by fans – can improve his world ranking as he takes the blocks next at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, California, on April 6-7.

Racing finally returns to Hayward Field with Oregon Relays

Track fans finally got to scratch the live competition itch, as racing returned to Hayward Field after a month-long hiatus for the first day of the Oregon Relays on Friday.

The rain-soaked invitational started with a victory from British Columbia’s Ruby Broadbent in the girl’s two-mile. The Parkland Secondary School senior finished the eight laps in 10:19.11. Broadbent is primarily a soccer player, who found running as a way to stay in shape during the pandemic.

She acknowledged the size of “super big” Hayward, the awesome crowd atmosphere and thanked her coach, Dacre Bowen, for the game plan: “Go out at an easy pace and pick it up every kilometer.”

The ex-Duck All-Stars were victorious in their old stomping grounds, completing the 4x1 mile in 16:07.83. Matthew Centrowitz, Charlie Hunter, Sam Prakel and Johnny Gregorek fell 18 seconds short of the record that’s been standing since August of 1985. There have only been three successful attempts at cracking the sub-16 minute mark.

“Thank you all for staying up past your bedtime to watch this,” Centrowitz said. “As the lead off, I gave these guys a little bit of work to do. They came through. I had no doubt in my mind that they would get the job done. It was a lot of fun to get the band back together. We were all at U of O at different times, so it’s special to be a part of something together now.”

Oregon Relays Day Two Recap

As the sun was setting over the cascades surrounding Hayward Field, hundreds of fans gathered on lane six, banging noise making tubes and cheering on the athletes competing in the mile championships during night two of the Oregon Relays, on Saturday.

Eugene’s own Jenn Randall won the women's pro mile challenge, completing four laps in 4 minutes and 33.84 seconds. She works as a physical therapist and coaches kids in the community, all while still running professionally for local team, Cascadia Elite.

Three men ran sub 4 minutes during the professional mile race. Johnny Gregorek was the fastest man in the final event of the night, running a 3:58.44.

Future Duck William Heslam now holds the state’s leading time in the boys 800 meters. The Rosevelt high school senior’s time of 1:49.79 is the fifth fastest in the nation this year. He took advantage of long strides and a strong kick to take control of the race on the home stretch.

“I knew if I put myself in a good position,” Heslam said, “I could put the wheels on in the last 150. This is obviously such a magic place to run and I’m super excited to show what I got – shout out to my grandma.”

BURLESON HEADED TO COLLEGIATE ATHLETE HALL OF FAME

THE 14-MEMBER CLASS WILL BE INDUCTED SEPT. 14 AT THE HULT CENTER IN EUGENE.

Oregon great and three-time NCAA champion Dyrol Burleson is headed to the Collegiate Track & Field/Cross Country Athlete Hall of Fame as announced Wednesday morning by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Cottage Grove, Ore., native is part of a 14-member class that will be inducted Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the Hult Center in Eugene. The ceremony will be open to the public and be two days prior to the Prefontaine Classic (Sept. 16-17) which will double as this year's Diamond League Final.

Undefeated against collegiate competition during his UO career, Burleson ran to the 1960 NCAA title in the 1500 meters followed by back-to-back titles in the mile in 1961 and 1962. That win in 1962 helped lead the Men of Oregon to their first NCAA team title with 85 points in front of the home fans in Eugene.

In April 1960, Burleson became the second sub-four miler in American history and the first to break the milestone barrier at Historic Hayward Field. With his time of 3:58.6, he broke the American record in the mile. He also set an American record in the 1500 meters of 3:40.9 in 1960. Burleson finished his running career with bests of 3:38.8 (1964) at 1500 meters and 3:55.60 (1963) in the mile.

As a senior, Burleson added a third American record to his credit with his 8:42.5 over two miles in 1962. In May of that same year, he anchored the Ducks' 4xMile relay to a then-world best time of 16:08.9 with teammates Archie San Romani, Vic Reeve and Keith Forman.

Oregon's Abdinasir Hussein earns 2023 Pac-12 Sportsmanship Award

The Pac-12 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) voted to award Oregon Men's Track and Cross Country student-athlete Abdinasir Hussein with the Pac-12 Sportsmanship Award for the 2022-23 season, the Conference announced today.

Nominated by Oregon Athletics in collaboration with Oregon's SAAC, this year's honor recognizes Hussein for his outstanding mentorship and encouragement of his fellow Duck teammates.

Known as "Naz," Hussein, who just completed his sophomore season, is a long distance runner that competes on both the Oregon cross country team in the fall and the indoor and outdoor track teams in the winter and spring.

While an injury limited him most of 2023, Hussein spent the time helping some of his peers navigate their own recoveries as well.

HARRISON WINS DUCKS’ THIRD U20 TITLE

FORMER UO STANDOUT RAEVYN ROGERS WILL REPRESENT TEAM USA AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Freshman Rheinhardt Harrison recorded this first win at Hayward Field Sunday with his performance in the USATF men's U20 1500 meters. In the senior-level competition, Raevyn Rogers was runner-up in the 800 meters and will represent Team USA at the World Championships in Budapest.

Sitting in second at the bell, Harrison powered away from the field with just under 300 meters to go and stopped the clock in 3:48.30 to secure the victory. The win marked the third U20 title of the meet for UO freshmen, joining Aaliyah McCormick (100H) and Benjamin Balazs (steeplechase).

Oregon signee Tayson Echohawk finished second behind his future teammate. He used a late charge in the final homestretch to cross the line in 3:50.28, moving from fourth to second in the process.

Rogers will be making her third-career appearance at the World Championships. She took the lead with 200 meters to go and held on for second place in a season-best 1:59.83 behind U.S. champ Nia Akins. In 2019—the first of her three WC appearance—Rogers came home with a silver medal.

Aiden Carter, another soon-to-be Oregon freshman, navigated the two-day, 10-event U20 decathlon to win the junior title. He entered Sunday in fourth place overall but climbed to the top of the leaderboard with top-three point totals in four of five events on day two. Carter claimed gold with 6,915 points.

Hayward Field to host U20 World Championships in 2026

Eugene’s reputation as an international citadel of athletics grew again on Monday, as the World Athletic Association selected Eugene to host the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships at Hayward Field.

The facility, which has hosted events such as the United States Olympic Trials to NCAA Championships and IAAF World Junior Championships, completed a $200 million renovation in 2022 that saw new facilities added and improved with the goal of bringing international events to the city.

At the meeting, council President Sebastian Coe highlighted the appeal of bringing the competition across the globe saying, “We are grateful that so many around the world are interesting in hosting our events and we’re delighted with the quality of candidates we have had to choose from to host these World Athletic Championships over the next three years”.

The World Athletic Championships facilitate one of the highest levels of competition for track and field across the globe. With history dating back to 1983, the WAC was privy to world record holders across various events, including Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and British distance runner Mo Farah. In 2026, it’ll invite Olympic-level athletes aged 20 and under to the University of Oregon campus as the competition hosts its biennial series.
