OUTDOOR CAMPAIGN BEGINS AT HAYWARD FIELD

Before Friday night's 10K session, the Ducks will host a Kids Try-It Clinic (12 & under) at Hayward Field. The one-hour clinic will give kids the change to experience several track and field events including long jump, high jump, hurdles, shot put and turbo javelin.

On-site registration begins near the tower at 5:30 p.m. Gates for participants will open at 6 p.m. with the clinic beginning at 6:15 p.m.

The meet officially kicks off at 8 p.m. with the women's 10,000 meters. Izzy Thornton-Bott, ninth place in the mile at the recent NCAA Indoor Championships, is scheduled for pacing duties. The field includes three UO women—Maddy Elmore, Malia Pivec and Harper McClain—that were all-region selections in cross country this past fall.

The men's 10K will start at 8:40 p.m. and be paced, in part, by former UO standout Aaron Bienenfeld. As part of the 20-man field, Caleb Brown, Abdinasir Hussein, Quincy Norman and Cameron Stein are set to represent the Ducks. Hussein and Norman were both all-region performers in cross country.

Oregon Previews provide perfect weather for distance racing as Oregon Track and Field team opens its outdoor season

As darkness fell and the temperature dropped, the lights were bright at Hayward Field for the first time this year as the Oregon Previews kicked off the 2023 outdoor season on Friday night. Day one featured the women’s and men’s 10,000 meters.

The 25 laps for the women were paced by junior Izzy Thorton-Bott, who finished ninth in the mile at the NCAA indoor championships earlier in March. Eight women toed the start line, including regional cross-country qualifiers Harper McClain, Malia Pivec and Maddy Elmore.

After taking the lead at the end of the third lap, Emilie Girard led the pack in the first mile with a time of 5 minutes and 22.93 seconds. Pivec began falling behind the lead pack 12 laps in, with Thorton-Bott urging her to keep up. Thornton-bott pumped her arm in the air every time she passed the finish line, causing the Hayward crowd to clap, yelp and cheer on the athletes.

EIGHT TOP-FIVE FINISHES, TWO WINS AT SDSU

The Oregon track and field team totaled eight top-five finishes including two wins and a top-10 program effort Saturday at the 44th Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State.

Freshman Aaliyah McCormick recorded the Ducks' first win of the afternoon, stopping the clock in 13.23 (-1.1 m/s) to take the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles. In addition to the victory, McCormick moved to sixth on the program's top-10 list despite the headwind. The San Diego native finished sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles (8.01) two weeks ago in Albuquerque.

Jadyn Mays, fifth in the 60 and 200 at NCAA Indoors, got her outdoor season started with a victory in the women's 100 meters. She crossed the finish in 11.19, just off her wind-legal PB of 11.16 from the Desert Heat Classic last season. With her performance, Mays improved upon her opener of 11.35 from last year at the same meet.
