Duck Baseball: 4/7-4/9 vs Oregon State (Game 3, Ducks LOSE 12-2)

Recommended Posts

I just received the email announcing that due to weather...tonight's Thursday night game versus OSU is moved to Sunday at 12:05 PM!

Oregon looks to extend winning streak as they host rival Oregon State for three-game series

Whatever you want to call it, the rivalry between Oregon and Oregon State travels across all sports.

This weekend, No. 25 Oregon (19-7, 6-3) hosts Oregon State (18-10, 5-7) for a three-game series, starting Thursday at 7 PM. Oregon State enters this matchup with a below .500 conference record but hopes to end the Ducks' 10-game winning streak.

Oregon State comes off a series victory over another Oregon rival, Washington, taking two of three against the Huskies on the road. The 2023 Oregon State Beavers may not be off to the start many expected but they still possess talent up and down their lineup and rotation.

Oregon State baseball weekend primer: Beavers visit Oregon Ducks for 3-game rivalry series

After limping through most of March, the Oregon State baseball team has regained its footing at the perfect time — right before facing the rival Oregon Ducks in a crucial three-game series in Eugene.

The Beavers have won six of their last eight games and earned a pair of Pac-12 series victories along the way, showing signs of life after a forgettable stretch in which they lost six of seven and suffered a sweep at the Stanford Cardinal.

But one of the biggest tests of the season looms this weekend.

The No. 25 Ducks enter the rivalry series in the middle of their hottest streak in more than 10 years, featuring a potent offense and veteran talent up and down the lineup.

Heres’s a primer on the series:

No. 25 Oregon baseball carries 10-game win streak into rivalry series with Oregon State

Oregon enters its annual series with rival Oregon State riding a 10-game win streak, a far different and better position for the Ducks than when they met the Beavers last season.

OSU swept all five meetings of the teams in 2022 and UO’s only lead in the season series came midway through the second inning in the fourth of those games.

Since his arrival in the summer of 2019, Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski has made it a point that he wants to be the best team in the state and prove it on the field each year. In 2021 UO took five of six from OSU, including a sweep in Eugene. The roles were reversed last season, when the Beavers were ranked No. 2.

“Playing the Beavers every year at PK is some of the most special games always,” Tanner Smith said. “The fans, the environment and that bad blood that’s within that rivalry.”

In Eugene on Comcast--the game is not on the Pac-12 Network.  However it is on streaming, and that quality has been excellent all season.

The Ducks are building a great NCAA resume' with a Strength-of-Schedule at No. 4 in the nation, with an RPI of No. 11, thus if we keep winning....

Beat those Blasted Beavers!

Rivalry Shutout Extends Win Streak To 11

Jace Stoffal was masterful Friday night as Oregon opened a three-game series against OSU with a 2-0 win at PK Park.

Thanks to a gutsy effort from an in-state kid, the Oregon baseball program is riding a win streak not seen around here in six decades

The Ducks extended their winning streak to 11 games Friday night, riding seven shutout innings from Roseburg native Jace Stoffal to a 2-0 win over Oregon State before 3,224 fans at PK Park.

Oregon has its longest win streak since the 1964 season, when that team put together a 12-game streak that the current team will look to match when the Beavers return to PK Park on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Jace Stoffal twirls a one-hit gem as No. 25 Oregon takes game one against Oregon State

“Being in-state, it’s pretty special,” said Stoffal on his performance. “Oregon was my dream school, and being able to pitch against Oregon State, who has a good history, so the emotions are pretty, pretty crazy. So I felt really good.”

Stoffal’s performance began with a loud out as Travis Bazzana rifled a ball to the right-field warning track before Rikuu Nishida made a leaping catch. From there, Stoffal settled down and was in a groove.

Working with a four-pitch mix, Stoffal consistently threw strikes, hitting over the 60-percent threshold on 104 pitches. Stoffal sat 89-91 MPH with his fastball, topping out at 93 MPH, while pairing it with a changeup and slider.

Baseball recap: Stoffal and Ducks shut out Beavers 2-0 in series opener

In front of a near sold out PK Park, Stoffal turned in the best start of his Oregon career, going seven innings and just that one hit with nine strikeouts and three walks.

OSU didn’t threaten to score until the seventh when Stoffal was running out of gas. The Beavers managed to load the bases with one out, but the Ducks right-hander coaxed Brady Kasper to pop out and Smith to fly out to center to end the potential rally.

Oregon’s bats weren’t exactly hot either. Beavers starter Trent Sellers was matching Stoffal pitch for pitch, but the Ducks had many more base runners and just couldn’t get one to cross home.

Jace Stoffal threw seven innings of one-hit ball and that was just enough for the Ducks to defeat the Beavers 2-0 to win series opener.

The local Comcast station does not get the games on TV, but it comes through on Live-Streaming just great.  I listen to the Oregon broadcasters on the app on my phone and then watch the live-stream.  GoDucks.com--Sports--Baseball--Schedule--"Watch" on the game.

Rivalry Series Will Be Decided Sunday

Oregon took an early lead over OSU on Saturday but the Beavers won 4-2 to even the series.

Another tightly played game between in-state rivals Saturday has produced a tight series that will be decided with a rubber match Sunday.

Oregon gave up two home runs Saturday, the difference in a 4-2 loss to Oregon State before 3,879 fans at PK Park. The Ducks (20-8, 7-4 Pac-12) were in line to capture their second nail-biter in two nights until a three-run homer in the seventh put the Beavers in front and set up a series-deciding game Sunday at noon.

"Two really good ball games," UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. "You know, one team came out on top one day, and the other the next day. Both of them were very good games. I'm looking forward to getting back out there again — I wish we could play right now."

Late inning homer lifts Oregon State over Oregon, snapping Ducks 11-game winning streak

A late seventh-inning three-run homer by Oregon State designated hitter Micah McDowell became the difference maker in a 4-2 Beavers win, snapping the Ducks' 11-game winning streak.

With RHP Matthew Grabmann on the mound, Oregon opted to go with the true freshman instead of playing matchups against the lefty McDowell with two outs in the inning. Grabmann hung a changeup, and McDowell put a charge into it, sending it mere feet above the outstretched arm of centerfielder Colby Shade.

“Guy (McDowell) just hit a changeup up,” said head coach Mark Wasikowski after the game. “Matthew didn’t make a great pitch on that one, and the guy hit it out. He’s (McDowell) coming off of an injury, he didn’t play last weekend. No, he just did a nice job.

He needed to get a hit, and he did… There was a lot of discussions about not just him but several of the other hitters. We went with Matthew, we trust Matthew, and I’d do the same thing over again.”

A writer from D1 Baseball has been at the Duck/Beaver series this weekend. However, the articles

are behind a paywall so I can't post them here. The writer has been amazed at the atmosphere/attendance

of the games at PK Park. Rob Moseley quotes a takeaway from the article in the tweet below.

Ducks Drop Rivalry Series Finale

Oregon is back in action at home against San Francisco on Tuesday after losing Sunday to Oregon State.

The deciding game of Oregon's rivalry series against Oregon State was a disappointment for the home team, with the Ducks allowing five runs in the top of the first inning and going without a hit until the eighth on the way to a 12-2 loss before 1,645 fans at PK Park.

The Ducks (20-9, 7-5 Pac-12) lost back-to-back games for the first time since mid-March, after OSU ended their 11-game winning streak Saturday. The Beavers led 7-0 through three innings Sunday and 9-0 before Oregon broke up the no-hitter and the shutout in the eighth.

"They out-pitched us today, considerably," UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. "And that was the story of the day."

Oregon's offensive woes continue as they drop game three and series against Oregon State

A day after Oregon State ended No. 25 Oregon's 11-game winning streak, the Beavers walloped the Ducks, 12-2, to earn a series win on Sunday.

Sunday's matchup, initially scheduled for Thursday night, brought out the smallest crowd of the series as the game fell right during the middle of Easter celebrations.

However, it did not take long for the Beavers to start making members of the crowd contemplate heading home early.
