Spring Football Practice: 4/6/23

Recommended Posts

Spring football practice is scheduled for today. I am starting this thread early so that posters may start dropping items in as they occur.

There are 15 spring practices scheduled this season. Each practice will have it's own thread on OBDF and all articles in that thread will only pertain to that particular practice.

This should help in keeping information organized and make it easier for our readers to navigate.

FYI, in the article below you will see the dates for the practices scheduled. Be sure to check in later today as practice articles, interviews, and updates start coming in.

Spring Ball Takeaways: Ducks look for fast play in fourth spring practice

On Tuesday afternoon following the Oregon Ducks’ first spring practice after the two-week break, head coach Dan Lanning was asked about what he wanted to see from his players going into Thursday’s practice, and then again into Saturday’s practice.

Consistent growth was the answer.

Tosh Lupoi and Oregon's defense attacking their weakpoints from 2022 in early periods of spring ball

Year two of Oregon's defense under Defensive Coordinator Tosh Lupoi is underway and the Ducks have plenty of holes to fill, new talent to merge with returning talent and build off a first season that saw a lot of success but also left a lot of room for improvement.

"Now it's certainly exciting to see the culture unfold, guys buying in, having a true offseason together," said Lupoi after Oregon's fourth spring practice of the year.

One of the first steps for Oregon's staff and defense will be to find its new vocal leaders. Gone are seniors Bennett Williams and DJ Johnson, and underclassmen Noah Sewell and Christian Gonzalez declared for the NFL Draft with eligibility remaining.

"We're going to make it more of a position responsibility," Lupoi said of filling the leadership void. "Some of the guys that played with us last season, and certainly some guys who are competing now. We're going to start clean and fresh. No one here has a guaranteed job. We're going to try and improve every single day."

Sometimes the little tidbits at the bottom of an article prove interesting...

"Former Oregon TE Matt Mariota was on the sidelines at Oregon's spring football practice and intends to start working for Oregon's coaching staff. Mariota played for the Ducks from 2014 to 2018 and then headed to England for his Master's Degree at the University of Leeds this past fall. He was eligible to play for Leeds' American Football team this fall and did so. Now back in Eugene, he's working with Oregon's staff to join the program shortly as an intern and get into coaching."

Looks like the Ducks will have one Mariota family member joining the staff... Good luck with your career choice, young man!

Notable quotes from defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi after Ducks' practice

The Dan Lanning era for the Oregon Ducks has brought many great things to the program. However, one of the few downsides of his tenure in Eugene is the fact that he rarely makes his coordinators available to the media. Under Mario Cristobal, we were able to talk to both offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead and defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter each and every week, but under Lanning, that has changed.

The last time that we got to talk to DC Tosh Lupoi was back in August during fall camp. So on Thursday, when he was made available to the media following the Ducks’ fourth practice of the year, there were a lot of questions to ask, and a lot of things to talk about.

Between the frustrating 2022 season defensively, the new players coming in, the new coaches on the staff, and many other things, Lupoi was a busy man answering questions. Here are some of the most notable quotes from him on Thursday.

“We didn’t play well enough,” Tosh Lupoi said of Oregon’s 2022 defense. “We can continue to climb to improve and that’s what we’re doing right now.”

FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT: APRIL 6

Among the mantras UO defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi barked to his players throughout practice Thursday was "good to great."

Thursday was Oregon's fourth practice of this spring, and the second in full pads. Lupoi was consistently reminding his players in practice to raise their level from "good to great," and the UO defense is looking to take that same step as a unit from year one under the current coaching staff last fall to year two this upcoming season.

"At the end of the day, (it was) awesome to be part of a 10-win season and to have that senior class go out the way they did, with the victory at the end," Lupoi said of the 2022 season, which ended in a Holiday Bowl victory over North Carolina. "However, starting with me, we have tons of improvement and things that we can get better on, (that) we're really attacking."

Oregon players continue to rave about OT Josh Conerly's development this spring

Oregon Ducks offensive lineman Josh Conerly came into camp last season with much fanfare. He was one of the program’s highest recruits in history, and the highest-rated offensive lineman to ever sign with the Ducks. While most true freshmen end up riding the bench for a season, Conerly played some sparingly in 2022, often used in a jumbo, short-yardage package.

Despite playing on the O-line, Conerly’s highlight of the year was actually a touchdown catch at Colorado vs. the Buffaloes. But Conerly wasn’t brought in to catch passes. He was recruited to protect the quarterback and open running lanes, following in the long line of successful left tackles at Oregon that includes Penei Sewell, Tyrell Crosby, and TJ Bass in recent history.

According to his teammates, Conerly has worked hard in this off-season and is well on his way to reaching his high potential.

Troy Franklin talks year two with Bo Nix, Ty Thompson growth, and Will Stein's offense

There’s a nice mix of returning faces and new additions for the Oregon Ducks this season. While almost half of the roster has been turned over, and over 40 recruits or transfers are now on the team, some of the top performers from the 2022 season will be in Eugene again this year.

Among them are QB Bo Nix, WR Troy Franklin, RB Bucky Irving, and TE Terrence Ferguson.

We got our first chance to talk to Franklin, Oregon’s leading WR from last season, on Thursday afternoon following the Ducks’ fourth spring practice of the year. It gave us a chance to discuss what Franklin had been working to improve over the offseason, how his chemistry with Nix is growing, and what his new role in the Will Stein offense.

It resulted in some great insights and quotes from the junior WR. Here are a few of the most notable things Franklin said.

WATCH Marcus Harper II: Postgame Interview

Marcus Harper II preparing for bigger role on reloading Oregon Ducks offensive line

Oregon’s offensive line is in a similar position to where it was three years ago, having to replace four starters from a heralded group that was a pillar of the offense the year before.

Alex Forsyth, T.J. Bass, Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu, Ryan Walk and Steven Jones had the unenviable task of replacing Jake Hanson, Shane Lemieux, Calvin Throckmorton, Brady Aiello and Dallas Warmack and later Penei Sewell. Yet the Ducks had the best offensive line in the Pac-12, allowed the fewest sacks in the country last season and paved the way for a top 20 offense in nearly every statistic.

Who was going to take over at center after Hanson was the biggest question facing the group entering the 2020 offseason, which Forsyth more than solidified over the past three years. Now the question resurfaces and it’ll be up to Marcus Harper II and Jackson Powers-Johnson to compete to be the next starting center for the Ducks, make the protection calls on the field and snap the ball to Bo Nix.

“Center is a lot harder than people think,” said Harper, who was the center with the first-team offense early during Thursday’s practice.

What's been Jordan Burch's early impact at Oregon?

The Oregon Defense needs to be better at getting after the quarterback next season. After posting just 18 sacks in 13 games last year, the worst number at Oregon since the 1986 season, the Ducks spent this past offseason retooling the roster. One of those additions was one of the top transfer prospects in South Carolina, edge defender Jordan Burch.

"You talk about changing a defense; it starts with having guys with great size up front that have the ability to play and play at a high level. Jordan's done that," said head coach Dan Lanning.

Marcus Harper splitting time between positions, enthused by opportunity at center

Junior offensive lineman Marcus Harper has his heart set on earning a starting job for a second straight season, however, right now it's not clear exactly which spot that will be.

After working exclusively at left guard last season (where he played 710 snaps — the sixth most an Oregon offensive player), Harper has opened up the month of April working at center as well as offensive guard.

“I’ve been bouncing around equally [between center and guard]," Harper told reporters after Thursday's practice. “Center is a lot harder than people think. I played center a few times in past years in practice. It’s a different feel. You're the second quarterback of the offense, and the O-Line kind of runs through you."
