Spring Football Practice: 4/11/23

Recommended Posts

Spring football practice is scheduled for today. I am starting this thread early so that posters may start dropping items in as they occur.

There are 15 spring practices scheduled this season. Each practice will have it's own thread on OBDF and all articles in that thread will only pertain to that particular practice.

This should help in keeping information organized and make it easier for our readers to navigate.

FYI, in the article below you will see the dates for the practices scheduled. Be sure to check in later today as practice articles, interviews, and updates start coming in.

Tez Johnson, Traeshon Holden bringing healthy competition to Ducks' WR room

One of the several areas on the Oregon Ducks’ 2023 roster that can stand to add a couple of pieces going forward is the wide receiver position. After losing a handful of players over the last two years, Dan Lanning and Co. have done a nice, job of adding some talented players, but they still have room to grow, especially when it comes to depth.

This offseason, both Traeshon Holden and Tez Johnson were added to the roster. Each presents a different skill set — Holden is more of a big-bodied, physical receiver, while Johnson’s slight frame allows him unique speed and agility in open space — but both can provide major upsides for the Oregon offense.

With Tez Johnson and Traeshon Holden now fighting for targets in the WR room, Bo Nix knows that the end result will be everyone getting better.

Oregon WR coach Junior Adams opens up about team's new receivers

After losing one starter to graduation and a few key receivers to transfer portal, the Ducks set out this offseason to replenish Bo Nix's crop of targets.

Wide receivers coach Junior Adams targeted, recruited and landed the services of a pair of veteran transfer receivers along with two top prep targets. Three of those four players have since enrolled and taken part in spring camp.

Portal additions Traeshon Holden (Alabama) and Tez Johnson (Troy) have paths to immediate playing time, and according to their new position coach have exhibited their desire to do so from the get-go. In particular, Adams praises the way the pair have worked to get up to speed with the offense, terminology and verbiage.

"Treaeshon and Tez come in at like 6 AM in the morning and start to jump into the install before anyone gets there," Adams said after Tuesday's practice. "You can see it's paying off."

Oregon's offensive system blending new and old this spring

Part of the focus when bringing in a new coordinator like Will Stein is making sure that his scheme and philosophy mesh well with the rest of the offensive coaching staff while also bringing in new ideas for the talent on the team.

“The key for us now is, 'OK, let’s challenge ourselves to be different and use our personnel in the best way,'” Lanning said. “No offense or defense should ever look the same when personnel changes.”

Integrating Stein’s offensive plan with wide receivers coach Junior Adams’ style of route combinations will be compared to the early days between him and Dillingham, but apparently, these two are off to just as good of a start.

Oregon newcomers Traeshon Holden, Tez Johnson make strong first impressions

Oregon might have had an inkling prior to the season starting that wideout Troy Franklin was about to take a major step toward stardom, but few outside of Eugene expected the second-year wideout to break out the way he did.

In fact, expectations were low for what was a young Oregon receiving room in general entering last season. Then Franklin turned into a big-play machine, with 891 yards and nine touchdowns. Chase Cota was a reliable option for Bo Nix. Kris Hutson posted career-highs for receptions and yards.

Things are different now. Entering the 2023 season, this group looks like it will be one of the better wideout rooms in the conference.

Franklin’s return plays a part in that. Offseason additions from Alabama’s Traeshon Holden and Troy’s Tez Johnson help, too. The summer will also bring 5-star 2023 signee Jurrion Dickey to campus.

“Competition brings out the best in everyone,” wideout coach Junior Adams said Tuesday.

And the newcomers are pushing for spots.

FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT: APRIL 11

Another week of spring practice for the Ducks began Tuesday, but this week won't be like the others so far.

Oregon's third practice of this week, scheduled for Saturday, will be the program's first scrimmage of this spring.

What, UO coach Dan Lanning was asked Tuesday, will be the Ducks' goal for the scrimmage? "Get better at football," he said with a wry smile.

Lanning was having some fun with local media with the clipped response. But there was truth in the simple answer, too — spring ball is about steady progress, day to day, week to week, month to month.

The Ducks began a new week of practice Tuesday that will culminate in a scrimmage Saturday.
