Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 16 Share Posted April 19, 2023 Ducks drop heartbreaker at Portland Portland scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally to a 10-9 win over Oregon at Joe Etzel Field on Tuesday night. Tanner Smith added the career RBI record to his resume in his first bat driving in a pair on a double for his 138th and 139th RBI. The Ducks' left fielder broke the record of 137 set by Gabe Matthews (2017-2021). The Ducks tacked on a run in the top of the ninth to give them a three-run lead. Bennet Thompson doubled and came around to score on a Portland throwing error. The Pilots rallied with one out in the ninth. A hit, walk and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases before a fielder's choice plated a run for the Pilots. Then with runners at the corners, pinch hitter Justin Tsukada delivered a two-run double to tie the game. It went from bad to worse for the Ducks when Grant dropped what would have been an inning-ending pop out allowing Tsukada to score the winning run. A ninth-inning blown save from Josh Mollerus, the first of the year, gave Portland a 10-9 stunning win over the Ducks. Oregon turned the ball over to Mollerus in the eighth inning, looking for the six-out save. Mollerus struck out the first four batters he faced before a one-out single in the ninth inning began the Pilots' second comeback of the night. Mollerus would walk and hit another batter, loading the bases. A fielder's choice allowed a run to cross, as Oregon led 9-7. Justin Tsukuda, a true freshman, ripped a two-RBI double to right off Mollerus, just his third hit of his career. After the double, the game was knotted, 9-9. Mollerus induced a weak pop-up to Gavin Grant, who dropped the ball amidst the rain, as the winning run crossed home plate. Tuesday marked Oregon's second-midweek loss of the season and dropped them to 24-11 on the season. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 17 Share Posted April 19, 2023 Oregon Baseball Loses To Portland 9-10 Ducks pitching fails on all levels in the loss. On the surface, it would appear that Oregon Ducks baseball lost on the road in Portland in the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday because of an error in the outfield. This defeat, however, squarely rests in the lap of the pitching staff because the game should have never gotten to the point of turning on a botched play in the bottom of the ninth inning. Freshman Jackson Pace pulled the start for the Ducks. In spite of a run by the Pilots in the second inning, Pace pitched well enough into the mid-innings to have the luxury of sitting on a comfortable lead. Meanwhile, the Oregon bats immediately jumped on Portland’s pitching with a Tanner Smith 2-RBI double that gave him the all-time RBI record at Oregon.
