2024 Football Recruits...Announcements, Updates (No. 3)

Recommended Posts

Our 2nd thread for this topic has reached a 3rd page and has gotten too cumbersome to handle.  So, I am starting a new thread (No. 3).

NJDuck and I have never gone through a whole year cycle of postings regarding recruiting before, so this has been a learning experience. Along with the fact that Coach Lanning and his crew are such good recruiters, this thread grows quickly.

War Daddy Recruit: Breaking down the contenders for No. 3 prospect Williams Nwaneri

Two years ago, the nation was still struggling through the Covid-19 pandemic and it was tough for teachers and coaches to get to know kids at school with all the restrictions. Jamar Mozee eyed a “tall, skinny kid” wearing a mask in the cafeteria and approached him with the idea of adding another big-framed body to the roster thinking Nwaneri was going to tell him that he was a basketball player. That’s when Williams Nwaneri first told him he’s a football player that had sent him that Twitter message. Nwaneri says he still has that message saved.

“He says you never answered me,” Mozee said with a laugh, adding he never heard from Nwaneri from eighth grade football in the area as well. “He swears by it.”

The season was unfortunately halfway over at that point, but Mozee and the now nearly 6-foot-7, 260-pound Nwaneri have been on the same page ever since. Nwaneri was excited to start attending offseason workouts leading into his sophomore campaign and he hasn’t missed a day since. He’s gone from having a hard time doing box push-ups to dominating every snap of a varsity football game...

Williams Nwaneri is a naturally-gifted late-bloomer who saw his recruitment take off like a rocket ship.

Torres’ Take: The Latest in Oregon Football Recruiting

Recruiting intel and notes ahead of the big spring game next weekend.

The spring game is next weekend, which means Oregon will host its most impressive group of visitors all year. The only weekend that comes close to matching that level of talent is the Saturday night live camp, typically held every year in Eugene at the end of July.

All eyes are on next weekend and the potential for some serious fireworks, but there's plenty to talk about this weekend. Here are some of my thoughts and what I'm hearing on top Oregon targets.

Return visits, delayed commitments raise intrigue around UO's 2024 QB recruitment

There are some interesting developments that are taking place when it comes to quarterback recruiting at the University of Oregon.

Over the past couple of months, it has become clear that the Ducks are largely picking between a pair of quarterback recruits in the 2024 class; 3-star Luke Moga and 4-star Michael Van Buren. While there was some early buzz that they might be in the mix to land 5-star QB Dylan Raiola, that has cooled over the past month, and it appeared that one of the two aforementioned players was going to end up being Will Stein’s guy in the 2024 class.

A week ago, handicappers would have said that Moga was the likely option, with a prediction from 247Sports Steve Wiltfong for the rising passer to pick Oregon. However, some things may be changing as the cycle goes on.

On Sunday, Van Buren — who was in Eugene for a visit last weekend — announced that he would be coming back to Oregon for the spring game next weekend. Not long after, Moga announced that he would be delaying his official commitment, which was scheduled for April 28, the day before Oregon’s spring game.

It should also be noted that Moga was on campus with the Ducks this weekend.

So what does all of that mean? I’ve got a few thoughts.

More Twists and Turns for Oregon Quarterback Recruiting

Delayed commitments and return visits add more intrigue for Will Stein and the Ducks.

Oregon is looking to make a major impact on the recruiting trail in the coming weeks and that starts this weekend.

On Saturday, the Ducks will host a star-studded group of recruits on campus for their spring game, but two names have drawn the most attention in recent days.

Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy quarterback Michael Van Buren and Phoenix (Ariz.) Sunnyslope quarterback Luke Moga have both taken unofficial visits to Eugene in recent weeks. As of Monday morning, they'll both be back on campus for the spring game.

For starters, it looks like the Ducks are at the very least seriously considering taking two quarterbacks in the 2024 class. That much we know for sure.

Making the Case: Will it be Georgia, Oregon or A&M for Tristan Jernigan

Tristan Jernigan has more than a dozen offers but in recent days the three-star linebacker has narrowed his choices to three programs.

Georgia, Oregon and Texas A&M made the cut for the Tupelo, Miss., standout and while a solid commitment date has not been finalized it looks like one of those three programs will win out for his services.

And Jernigan will be a big-time catch in the 2024 class. The three-star linebacker is incredibly aware on the football field and also a devastating tackler who likes to hit people hard, track them to the sideline and make plays from his linebacker position.

In today’s Making the Case, experts from around the Rivals network make an argument for a particular school and then National Recruiting Director Adam Gorney issues his verdict as to where he sees Jernigan ending up.

Ressler is a talented receiver who will be a three-year starter for the Monarchs. He’s a tough, sure handed slot receiver who runs well after the catch.

“One thing all five of my schools have in common is great coaching,” Ressler said. “A strong coaching staff is very important in my decision and all of these schools have world class head coaches and position coaches.

“My main goal is not only to play early but to get mentorship and to continue to get better. I believe all five of these schools can provide that for me.”

Is Oregon Trending for Linebacker Justin Williams Ahead of a Spring Game Visit?

It's a big week for Oregon Football. The 2023 NFL Draft kicked off on Thursday, the spring game is on Saturday, and the Ducks are hosting their best group of recruits in program history.

Five-stars litter the updated recruiting visitor list, but some names draw more attention than others. That's because they're viewed as priority targets, guys that Oregon believes they have a legitimate chance to land.

One such recruit is 2024 Conroe (Tex.) Oak Ridge linebacker Justin Williams, who will return to Eugene for the first time since January, and the Ducks could be looking to seal the deal.

Ahead of this weekend's visit, Williams was predicted to Oregon by national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman of On3 Sports. Oregon is also the 247Sports Crystal Ball leader for the five-star linebacker, with Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong logging his pick for the Ducks back in October.

Four-Star DB Dakoda Fields locks in official visit dates with Miami, Oregon and USC

Fields has been active taking unofficial visits this off-season and is set for a busy June with three official visit dates now locked in.

“I’m going to USC June 2, Miami June 16 and Oregon June 23,” Fields said. “I like all three of those programs a lot and feel a good connection with the coaching staffs so I'm excited to get out there and take my visits."

Brandon Baker, Nation's No. 1 Offensive Tackle, Recaps Oregon Spring Game Visit

Baker is a priority target for A'lique Terry in the 2024 recruiting class and one of the biggest names on the West Coast.

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei offensive tackle Brandon Baker has been at the top of Oregon's recruiting big board for a long time. In fact, I considered Oregon the team to beat last fall.

But the departure of Adrian Klemm served as a bit of a reset in his recruitment. He visited Eugene for the spring game this past weekend and broke down some of the highlights with Ducks Digest.

"Really just being able to get a feel for Coach Terry, the new offensive line coach and the new O-line staff that they have with Coach Cutter (Leftwich) and Coach Cav (Mike Cavanaugh). It's really great to see how they're all gelling together and what Coach Lanning is doing."

Baker had particular praise for Dan Lanning's vision and even has confidence that he'll finish his career in the company of college football's elite.

Prediction: Oregon to Land All-American Quarterback

Oregon is surging up the national recruiting rankingsfollowing the recent commitment of Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy cornerback Ify Obidegwuon Sunday.

Now, their attention turns to a number of big names including USC wide receiver transfer Gary Bryant Jr., who is set to announce his decision on Saturday.

Today, I'm ready to roll out another prediction. I'm predicting that Oregon will land 2024 Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy quarterback Michael Van Buren.

EXPLAINING THE PICK

First off, Van Buren, or MVB as he's come to be known in the Oregon Football community, has clear interest in the Ducks. He has them in his top three along with Maryland and Penn State.

Furthermore, he took two trips out to Eugene in the month of April, which would also indicate clear interest. However, maybe you could dial back what you take away from that second trip just a hair because he did compete in the Elite 11 Eugene regional.

That's not to say he didn't want to take another trip, but that probably played a role in his prompt return out West.

Furthermore, he's spoke very highly of his relationship with offensive coordinator Will Stein, who's generated a lot of buzz in just the short amount of time he's been on staff with the Ducks, securing commitments from quarterbacks Austin Novosad ('23) and Luke Moga ('24).

The Ducks also landed a commitment from Van Buren's teammate Ify Obidegwu, which gives them a peer recruiter that can stay in his ear about Oregon in a more casual sense versus a coach's approach. He's not on the same side of the ball, but it's still an opportunity to play college ball with a friend, which offers familiarity and a sense of comfort, which is especially important given the distance.

The Ducks are already building a special class that's ranked inside the top ten nationally, and both MVB and the coaches know a commitment from him could shoot this class to the next level and attract more high-level recruits. Penn State, the team that had previously been viewed as his leader, offered a 2024 quarterback in Trever Jackson out of Winter Garden, Florida late last month, which could indicate that they're pivoting their approach, or at the very least preparing for a situation in which they lose out on Van Buren.

Lastly, some of the sources I've talked to are indicating that a commitment date of July 8 that the Under Armour-American had previously set could very well be flexible, so if you take into account all of his recent activity on the trail, Oregon continues to trend as the team to beat.

Tuesdays with Gorney: Buying and selling recruiting rumors

In today’s Tuesdays with Gorney, Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney plays Buy It or Don’t Buy It when it comes to 10 recruiting rumors he’s hearing:

RUMOR: Oregon will beat Penn State and others for QB Michael Van Buren.

dkboxmaujr11y5g6qfru

BUY IT. The Ducks just landed a quarterback commitment from Phoenix (Ariz.) Sunnyslope’s

Luke Moga in late April but Oregon is probably not done in that department. There is always the transfer portal route but it’s more likely that the Ducks have turned a corner with the four-star quarterback from Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances. It seems like things are trending in that direction and that Oregon looks like the leader right now for Van Buren as Moga is also fine with it because he was told the planning for QB recruiting as well.

Ducks become overwhelming favorite to land No. 3 OT in 2024 class

The Oregon Ducks are trying to get bigger on the offensive line, it appears, and they might be well on their way to achieving that.

Over the past several months, A’lique Terry and the Ducks have been recruiting 4-star OT JacQawn McRoy, the No. 3 ranked OT in the 2024 class. Standing at 6-foot-8, 365 pounds, McRoy would be among the biggest players on the team if he ended up coming to Oregon.

Fortunately for the Ducks, it appears that the possibility could be turning into a reality. A pair of recruiting predictions on On3 came in on Tuesday that show Oregon as the team to beat for McRoy’s commitment. According to On3’s recruiting prediction machine, the Ducks have an overwhelming 92.7% chance to land the OT who is rated by 247Sports as the No. 62 overall player in the 2023 class.

We will see in the coming months whether or not the Ducks can close, but for the time being they seem to be in a great spot.

Latest crystal balls for Dylan Raiola and other 2024 quarterbacks

The Ducks are focused on taking two quarterbacks in the 2024 college football recruiting class and landing one already at the end of last month by landing three-star QB Luke Moga.

At one time, I thought that commitment could mean Oregon wouldn’t have as good a chance with Raiola or Michael Van Buren, but since Moga’s commitment, Van Buren has continued to pick up crystal ball projections to land at Oregon.

Van Buren was once viewed as a Penn State lean. He’s ranked 129th overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings, as well as 11th among quarterbacks. The Nittany Lions felt like the favorite before he visited Oregon.

Now, Oregon seems poised to land Michael Van Buren and Luke Moga. The Ducks also flipped four-star quarterback Austin Novosad in the 2023 cycle, so the quarterback position is going to be set going forward for the Ducks, despite missing on Dante Moore in 2023.

Moore flipped from Oregon to UCLA.  But Bo Nix is still going to be the starter this season and by the time the 2024 season rolls around, Novosad will hopefully be ready with Mona and Michael Van Buren ready to compete as backups, at least if all the projections prove to be true.
