Ducks Bring Win Streak Into Weekend

A monumental series beckons for the Oregon baseball team, and the Ducks will take a three-game winning streak into the weekend after completing a two-game midweek sweep of Gonzaga on Wednesday at PK Park, 10-5.

The No. 20 Ducks (28-12) are tied for third in the Pac-12 at 11-7, 2.5 games behind first-place Arizona State, which will be in Eugene this weekend for a series with significant implications on the conference race.

Oregon brings momentum into the showdown after two come-from-behind wins over Gonzaga, with UO head coach Mark Wasikowski's team scoring seven runs from the fifth inning on Wednesday to overcome an early 3-2 deficit.

"Coach Waz (brought) in a blue-collar mentality, and late in the game that's when you need it, especially when you're not going great," said UO outfielder Bryce Boettcher, who reached three times and stole a career-high-tying three bases Wednesday.

"Instead of rolling over, our team does a good job of rallying together. … I think it goes back to that white T-shirt, blue-collar mentality that was instilled in us, and that's what helps us."

This team is really starting to run on all cylinders, both on offence and defend. Really fun to watch a team that disciplined and make very few mistakes.

Sweep Averted By Sun Devils

No. 20 Oregon led through six innings Sunday but No. 12 ASU rallied to win and avoid being swept at PK Park.

In a game that turned out to be a microcosm of the weekend series between Oregon and Arizona State, the No. 20 Ducks had the better of things most of the way in Sunday's finale but the No. 12 Sun Devils rallied late to win 9-6 and avoid being swept in the series.

Oregon (30-13, 13-8 Pac-12) had the lead Sunday until the seventh inning, when ASU scored four runs to go ahead 7-5. The Sun Devils homered four times to stave off a series sweep, including twice in the critical seventh inning.

"They did a nice job of hitting," UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. "They've got a good offense and they were able to put some at-bats together when they needed to. And I thought that's what the difference was. They did a nice job when they absolutely had to."

The third-place Ducks took the first two games of the series and pulled within 1.5 games of the Sun Devils in the Pac-12. Stanford and UCLA played later Sunday, with the Cardinal coming out of the weekend either a half-game ahead of or behind ASU based on that result; Oregon also took two of three from the Cardinal in April.

No. 23 Oregon drop game three against No. 12 Arizona State behind bullpen struggles

A perfect 5-0 week was on the table for the No. 23 Ducks on Sunday as they took on No. 12 Arizona State beneath the calm grey skies.

Through two games of this top-25 showdown, extra-base hits have run their course, with 31 recorded. Extra-base hits would again play a significant role on Sunday, helping Arizona State avoid the sweep.

A string of late-inning extra-base hits put the Sun Devils on top, winning 9-6.

All nine of Arizona State’s runs came after the fifth inning, as the Ducks held the Sun Devils hitless through the game's first 5.1 innings.
