If Kenny does well it might just be another indicator the coaching game is a young man's game, in the modern era. Kenny just might be another sign the modern job of college coaching isn't for those who aren't young at heart, and body.

Interesting the dawgs go with being associated with greatness, but it is consistent. Much like their purple and gold, which can be tied to their attempt to align with the imperialistic past. That is just a facade, like their mens athletic program.

Love your writing, thanks for all you do Darren!

Thanks, Hayward. And a lot of the young man's game is being able to relate to today's athletes. There is a reason the greatest NFL ever doesn't have a job this year.

Totally. I always felt that instead of a 168 mph fastball he shoulda made it a more "believable" 132 or something..... but, what do I know

The hiring of CK did not push tOSU into the National Championship spotlight. They were already a favorite before the hire. Therefore, Day and Kelly will be under scrutiny, and pressure, to produce that championship.

    The part that I like….

Oregon is on a collision course with them, and can impact that outcome.

btw…I also am of the opinion that the college football world has caught up to “CK’s genius.”

Yes, Chip created something new that nobody was used to, but the world has long passed caught up. We'll see how he now does with only offense to worry about and elite talent.

I personally think Chip caught lightning in a bottle at the UO and the moment has passed. I also think Day might be creating a bit of an echo chamber that won’t help tOSU evolve…but they do have a LOT of talent.

This will be a ton of fun to watch.

Yes, talent shouldn't be the issue at Ohio State. Time to see what Chip has left in the tank.

Thank you, Darren. Always great to read your takes.

Before delving into your article I wonder if OBD fans know that both Chip and Ryan Day were born and raised in Manchester, NH. Former Florida coach Dan Mullen is also a Granite State guy. Three 'Boston-Irish' guys with basically the same upbringing and with little tolerance for the negative. Recall Day calling out Granny Holtz last season. And Chip, unless he is working for ESPN, is not a warm and fuzzy media guy. Although he seems to have lightened up with the move to Columbus.

[OT - Chip played high school hockey in Manchester and his line held the NH record for total points, goals, and assists, for decades.]

I think Chip to Columbus is serendipitous for Chip, Day, and Ohio State. Chip likes to run the football. Day after 3 consecutive losses to That Team Up North knows that the Buckeyes have to be more physical on offense. The hiring of Jim Knowles from OK State two seasons ago to be the DC has paid dividends for Day. Ohio State had one of the best Ds in the nation last season and all of the top draft-eligible starters on D are back. Plus, Day added all SEC CB, Caleb Downs, from the portal. I think Chip could have the same impact on offense that Knowles has had on the defense.

Chip will have a dual threat playing QB, Will Howard the All B12 2nd team QB in 2023. (Behind our man Dillon but ahead of Texas' Quinn Ewers.) The tOSU Blue Chip Roster features two excellent RBs in Henderson and Judkins who transferred in from Ole Miss. The WRs even without Marvin Harrison Jr., will be elite and a 4* TE is on the roster waiting to replace Cade Stover, one of this season's top TEs in the NFL draft.

The OL has been an issue for tOSU; good but not great. This could be the only weak link on the entire Buckeyes roster in 2024, as so noted below.

Ohio State averaged 31 points a game in 2023 with a good but not great fit at QB. McCord had tough duty following Justin Fields and CJ Stroud. I expect, especially with a 'lightweight schedule' that Ohio State will exceed this average by quite a bit in 2024. Kelly and the O have the luxury of beginning the season with three home games vs. Akron, W. Michigan, and Marshall. Three G5 teams that all finished with losing records. Akron and W. MI. were not bowl eligible and Marshall lost its bowl game to finish 6-7.

Before the trip to Eugene on 10/12, Ohio State plays at Michigan State and home vs. Iowa. Close to a lock to be 5-0 when Ohio State plays Oregon. The Ducks will also be favored in the first five games setting up a B1G Battle of the Os in Autzen.

I would have preferred for O'Brien to stay in Columbus and for Chip to stay at UCLA. Chip will have lots of shiny new toys to play with on offense in Columbus. UCLA with DTR at QB, finished 3rd in the nation in 2022 in total offense. I do not think Will Howard is as good as DTR but he will be able to be both a pass and run threat.

    A happy Chipper = a tough out.

A Cotton Bowl collapse calls for every aspect of Ohio State's offensive line to come under the microscope entering the 2024 offseason.

Thanks for your take, John, I agree. One thing for sure, it will be entertaining.

I think Chip Kelly was the luckiest guy in college football, much like MariØ, Slick and a few assistants. They road the backs of guys who really put in the hard work, Bellotti and Brooks, and built a program they took advantage of.

I give CK more credit than the others, but he was at the right place, at the right time. That place, that time, for him have passed, and he is just continuing to riding the fumes left over from that ride.

I don't have much good to say about CK going forward so I will leave my comments to the above. I do agree he had the potential to quietly be a good NFL OC, or small college HC, but that isn't who he is.

I think a good analogy is that he created a very successful startup company but wasn't good at running the company once it got big. Heck, I remember studying that stuff at the U of O biz school in the 90s. Hey, I did learn something afterall!!!

Sorry...NOT SOLD, for a couple of reasons.

    1. When I did my Analysis videos of his offense at Oregon, the emphasis was to do the No-Huddle to RUN the ball better.  The Spread Offense to RUN the ball better, and now he is going to Ohio State where they have had sophisticated passing offenses over the recent years?  Can he coach that?

At Oregon...our only small weakness on offense under him was on third and long, because we were not as skilled a Drop-Back passing team as others.  Chip's primary passing attack was play-action off the run threat, and that is not enough these days--as evidenced at his time at UCLA.

    2. No matter what is said about "less" recruiting?  Baloney.  The OC is critical in QB and WR recruiting; Will Stein has killed it with his high school QB AND Portal QB recruiting in just being here a year.  Is Chip going to be able to attract QBs to tOSU with his track record?

I am grateful to have this OC....

    Will Stein_Screenshot from ESPN Video.jpg

Oh I'm not predicting here whether he will be successful or not. And, sure, he'll be recruiting, but he can focus more on his side of the ball and the ingredients that he wants while not being weighed down with head coaching obligations. He can be the chef without having to run the restaurant. I'm sure he'll be more happy and motivated to focus on QB's and WR's than linebackers.

Obviously, you are free to root for any team you like. But, I completely disagree with your theory that Washington success helps Oregon. The east coast people do not equate Washington wins to mean Oregon is good. They do not spend any energy or time thinking about such things. Thus, the only thing that helps Oregon is for Oregon to beat Washington, Ohio State and Michigan.

Our ability to be the best program in the west and nation is not helped by having the Huskies win a national title. Do you not realize that winning a national title makes Washington the best team on the west coast and the nation. This is exactly what OBD is striving to accomplish. I will not root for the Huskies to accomplish our goals just because some duck fans feel better if we loose to the eventual national champions.

My dislike of the Huskies did not occur overnight. The Huskies have earned my dislike of them over the past five decades of their arrogance towards all things Oregon. Maybe you and other duck fans can ignore the arrogance and hatred that the majority of Washington fans have for Oregon but I cannot. I will be cheering for Michigan to destroy that hated team from the north.

Do you think Auburn fans cheer for an Alabama national title? Will Ohio State be cheering for Michigan? Did South Carolina fans feel like the football world gave them credit when Clemson won their national titles?

I am a Duck fan that refuses to live vicariously thru the success of the Washington Husky football program.

GO DUCKS and on Monday night Go Michigan!

I don't care how other fans cheer, especially those down south. And, I don't care about how a Husky win might make the Ducks look better for this season.

Eadt Coast bias is real. Perception is reality. If west coast teams win more often then that would help the case for all west coast teams. The reality is that west coast programs have not won enough, hence they (i.e. Oregon) does not get the benefit of the doubt.

Case in point: If the Ducks had won this year's Pac-12 Championship game, they absolutely would NOT have been invited to the CFP. Lack of Pac-12 success would have been a big reason why.

    Preach, Brother Darren, preach.

UW wins and the perception of Left Coast ball, all finesse, glitz not guts, does not disappear but it will have an impact on the eve of the Pac-4 headed to the B1G. And it will be a small bow but UW win will tie a small bow on Oregon's season; 2 Ls to the 2023/24 champion by 6 points. Whether or not UW wins Monday night, the Ducks will be a 2024 preseason top 10 team and UW will not.

I have seen two expert predictions that have Michigan winning by 10 plus points and holding UW to 16 points in one prediction and 17 in the other. Huh? Bama put up 20 points on Michigan with a QB and an offense no where close to the abilty of UW.

In all of football, particularly in CFB, the team with the better QB and O most often wins the game. The best QB Michigan played against OCC and in the B1G was Maryland's Taulia Tag. UM defeated Mayland by 7 points. UM won the game because of its D. Behind McCarthy UM's O was stagnant against Maryland just as it was for but for 1 drive in the 2nd half vs. Bama. And Bama while it gets props for the usual Saint Nick win over UGA and Kirby, was fortunate to beat an Auburn team, a team that lost to NM State, a team with a dysfunctional QB, that was able to consistently run the ball against Bama's D.

Michigan has not faced a QB as talented as Penix. Played against no O close to level of UW's O. And while the Right Coast media can not stop talking about how great Michigan's D is, the level of competition UM played against in the B1G this season was not close to the level of talent UW played against in the Pac-12. UW won road games at Arizona, Oregon State and USC and a neutral site game against OBD where it was a 9.5 dog. UM defeated Penn State on the road but PSU's O was MIA for most of the season. The Michigan O struggled against an Iowa team that 8-4 Tennessee with a true frosh making his first start at QB destroyed in the Citrus Bowl. Michigan averaged less than 3 yards a carry against Iowa.

Post game x-rays on Johnson revealed no major damage. Johnson reaggravated a foot injury he has been dealing with for the 2nd half of the season. And as Charles recently pointed out, Penix was a run threat vs. Texas. The UM DL mauled Milroe but Milroe despite the lost yardage on 6 sacks and having to play shortstop on many snaps ran for 63 yards. Bama ran for 172 yards notwithstanding the yardage lost by the UM DL overwhelming the Bama OL on many passing downs.

Will UW fans be insufferable if UW wins the title? Yes. But what's new with that. I want the Pac-12 to go out with perhaps the most ironic championship in the history of CFB. How did 'these guys' screw 'this' up?

Great points, Jon. And, I agree, UM will be in for a surprise for how lethal the Husky offense is when seeing it person. "Go Pac-12!" That's what I'll chant when the Huskies roll it up on UM.

    Great points DP.

East coast bias is a real thing. The only way to affect it is for a left coast team not named USuC to win.

A UW win might help some, but Oregon is hitting the right notes on its own.

I will say this, there are very few coaches (if any) I detest more than Harbaugh. And for different reasons I don't like Michigan much. This team has so much cheating and disregard for the  rules, they should have been banned from playoff.

On the other hand, Penix has made a believer out of me. That first game this year we pressured and knocked him down...he still threw dimes. And his quick release south paw style looks so weird, you think his accuracy was a fluke. Except he does it game after game.

So I agree with you Darren.

Attack the east coast bias, don't cheer for cheaters and keep the natty in the northwest.

After all, they did beat us twice this year.

Which means they must be good, cuz we're awesome!

The reality is, any successful programs fans are going to be labeled as  "arrogant" by the WSU and OSU's of the world. Let's be honest, Oregon has its share.... just not as many as the Huskies.

Thanks Darren, I totally agree with your point.  Thanks for writing and sharing it today.  Schadenfreude is my favorite word of 2023!

Two of my three daughters attended OSU.  My favorite cheered for the Ducks.  The Civil War has been loud and spirited whenever we get together. I cheer for the Beavers when they don't play the Ducks.

Likewise, the same goes for all the Pac-12.  Except I do experience Schadenfreude when the Trojans lose.

The best point of your article was, "...the greater war is the war against East Coast (especially the south) bias."

Whatever helps us win that war helps Oregon in the future.

Thanks for all of your excellent writing Darren!

Thanks for your support. I just can't bring myself to root for the likes of Michigan and don't even get me started if it was Alabama instead. I do feel the regional, NW, pride.

So many points to speculate on. I will touch on 2.

Washington winning a NC sounds wrong. But Michigan winning, due in part to cheating, is even worse!! I will not root for the Huskies. I truly do want them to lose and here's why. Washington winning a Natty will give them 2 banners. When will be the next time Oregon wins 2 NC's, let alone 3 to out rank the Mutts? But. If the puppies lose then they only have a split championship. When we win ours we will have bragging rights. But, I see your point. If Washington wins and by a fair margin, thats going to make everyone sit up and take notice of the freight train coming to the B!G.

Either way, it's the B!G conference Championship next Monday night. 'B!G, It Just Means More!'k

Well, if the Ducks can "fulfill their destiny," and win one and beat the Huskies on a regular basis then all (for the most part, is silenced). UW fans weren't really mentioning 1991 during the 13 game losing

streak earlier this decade. We are severely out recruiting UW, so i feel good about regularly beating them. And, Pennix is their Mariota, pretty hard to replace, so you have expect some drop off at QB.
