This kid could make SC a viable contender in year one of Riley taking over the SC program. He far and away would be the best QB in the Pac-12. And if he portals to SC, others will likely follow.

The kid is fun to watch. I'd love to see him at SC. Put me in the "a strong SC is good for the Pac12" camp.

    I'm going to say "yes".

    1)  They "stayed" with the program until the end of their college careers.  The fact that they have a chance to make the NFL, then they shouldn't jeopardize their future for a somewhat meaningless game.  So far, we haven't seen any player opt-out of a playoff game (yet).

    2)  We want to foster a good relationship with alums.  Well, these alums are our highest profile alums and they shouldn't be shunned.  It is not a good look to recruits to see a school turn their back on players who are doing what is best for their post college livelihood.

    3)  They will be seen on the sidelines during the game and it will be a positive to have the announcers talking about these NFL bound players on OUR sideline.

Completely agree. And I think it adds to the sense of camaraderie.

And THIS opinion above is what our rules are for; on other sites you would get insulted and bullied into silence.  Here, I want to see this--even if painful and not in agreement with the majority of my own view.  You bring up some excellent points that make watching for them in the future all that more interesting.  You should copy-and-paste your post and save it for future reference for all of us.

I want to protect the minority opinion because....my opinion in the early days of Cristobal was quite the minority opinion that grew into the majority.

OregonRich...I am glad you feel that you can post your thoughts in safety, and I hope it is an example to everyone.  The Duck water in this pond is just fine, so dive in!

Thanks, Charles. That's one of the many things that make this such a great site - even a highly unpopular opinion like mine can be aired and no-one attacks me personally for it. That's pretty darn amazing if you stop and think about it.

Thanks for all you do in keeping it this way.

  4. I should probably change my screen name to "Mr. Negative," but I'm not excited about Lanning's hiring in the least. I'm concerned about his age, inexperience, and potential for a lack of "seasoned judgment."

I think hiring Klemm as an assistant speaks to this and was a huge mistake by Lanning. There was a time when Oregon wouldn't touch a coach who was accused of abusing players (active lawsuits against Klemm on this front) and I see it as a black eye for the school (my school) and the program.

Based on the noise coming out of Hawaii, I'm also worried about Lanning's tutelage under Graham. Is Lanning okay with this behavior? The Klemm hire seems to say so.

Of less importance, but still concerning, I suspect the exciting offense we've missed during the Mario years won't be returning with Lanning joining the flock. I don't see Dillingham airing it out and the plucking of Brown 2.0 from the portal doesn't appear to allow for it anyway.

Lastly, I'm not sold on the Georgia D as the end all all be all (Alabama sure had their number) and even so, I wonder who was really running the show (I think Kirby may have had more to do with things than not).

I don't for a second doubt Lanning's desire to succeed. I just don't see it happening anytime soon. I don't think we'll see a Pac12 Championship during his tenure, nor anytime soon thereafter. As far as a National Championship, not a chance.

The letter was written close to the very beginning of the search for the new coach. It expressed concerns with the last two head coaching hires of people who had no connection with Oregon's football history from people who were intimately involved with that history and who are still passionate supporters of their team. I am also a passionate supporter of my Ducks and I completely understand and sympathize with the sentiments expressed in the letter. I'm sure most of you do too.

John Canzano has a job to do and, love him or hate him, he does his job very well. He is a columnist for the Oregonian and a big part of what he does is to shine a prickly light into the dark corners and controversies of sports in Oregon. He is well connected and he digs deep to get his stories. The more he is able to raise controversy, the better he is doing the job he was hired to do.

The only bad part about the letter being released, aside from the fact that its authors had no intention of it going public, was the timing of the article which made it seem like an attack on Dan Lanning's hire. The updated comments and posts of the author/authors make it clear that they are all in support of "Lanning Strip's" hire. Anyone who was surprised by the content of the original letter hasn't been paying attention to what people like Joey Harrington and other former player media talking heads have been saying since Helfrich was fired. Most of us can relate to the thoughts and ideas they were expressing.

That all said, I don't understand the need some feel to demean or disparage Justin Wilcox. He's a wonderful person and an excellent coach, and I'm honored to count him among my friends. He was interviewed for the Oregon job, looked at it in comparison to what he is doing and building at Cal and, allegedly, decided to pass. If you feel the petty need to criticize him for that, you didn't want him anyway, so what's your problem?  Although he is from here and he loves Oregon, he realized that the Oregon HC job wasn't a good fit for him. He should be commended for making a wise decision.

Just in case you haven't noticed, it's never been an easy task for Oregon to "kick Cal's ass" since Wilcox has been head coach there, and I don't expect that's going to change any time soon.

    Perfectly stated.

True.  Moorhead isn't even being considered. Like Kelly as a great offensive mind then, Lanning might be even better on the other side of the ball. In house or not the numbers Lanning put up are undeniably great. Lanning also come with very high praise from his peers.

All true. And if he's the choice, I hope I'm completely wrong. It sure as heck wouldn't be the first time. But I'm just saying my reservations are very high.

  7. Per Canzano: "If you're Oregon...are you really countering the Lincoln Rilley hire to USC with someone who has never done the job?"

I'd have to agree with Canzano on this.

And based on how Alabama demolished Georgia, the same Alabama that looked very pedestrian on and off throughout the season, I'm not seeing this as a home run.

I'm also concerned by his lack of West Coast ties. If he proves successful, is he gone in a fews years, leaving us right where we started?

    I'm officially underwhelmed.

According to sportswriter Emily Van Buskirk, Phil Knight wants Chip Kelly, and Kelly wants to return. However, some high-profile donors are lobbying for Justin Wilcox.

Barring an unforeseen dark-horse candidate who emerges at the 11th hour, I think Kelly will be the next Ducks coach.

Looks like she walked it back a bit...

I think this idea came from one of Canzano’s callers on his show. He pretty much shut it down with common sense, but he was polite.

It sounds crazy to me but his Tweet said "it was bantered about internally at Oregon...". Maybe they were bantering about how ridiculous an idea it was.
