  1. Our friends from the south have been throwing us a bone, folks.

Take note to the number of GA faithful that have politely advised us to be patient.  It’s takes time to develop into the program we think we should be today.  If parity hasn’t gone the way of the dodo already, it’s right on the threshold.  The rich have made themselves richer and GA has an abundance of wealth.

It’s tough not to pile on with negative criticisms first thing on overreaction Sunday’s but we're being counseled by others that have been down this path to, “Hang in there, you got the right guy”.  I'm sure DL and his staff are going to be critical of themselves and grow as a coaching unit as the team develops as well.

I have my thoughts on what I would like to have seen differently during the game, but perhaps I’m better served by staying in my lane and by just being a good team supporter.  After all, right now, that’s what our team needs.

I apologize.  That was uncalled for, but it's 2:30 here and I'm still wondering if that bad dream I had was really the GA game.  I'm going to bed!

So, I think we can assess from the difficulties with coverage and edge containment today that the new defensive install didn't go as well as hoped.  There were clearly some "issues" that will need to be teased apart in the film to identify where the players will need the fundamentals of the defense clarified for them.

If Fusky fans weren’t so inept, I’d suggest they deployed a ransomware attack and are holding our offense and defense hostage until PK coughs up the sum of:

  4. For what it's worth, my brother-in-law called me after the game with an observation from what he could see from his seat in the stands.   He's never coached, but is always objective in his analysis and has well above average intelligence, so I listen when he has an opinion.

He (bro-in-law) said that from the jump these QB's were playing different games.  The guy in red had multiple targets available with sizeable throwing windows on almost every play, while the guy in green faced just the opposite.  I gave him a kind of "no sh*t" response given the outcomes we were viewing on our flat-screens.  He assured me that I didn't understand.  He said the gap between one teams ability to create open space in comparison the other teams was as wide as he's seen in years.  Hearing those words, and being familiar with his tone, was very disconcerting to me.

Bo's put together a body of work that fairly puts him in the cross-hairs with performances such as today's.  But...man, there's plenty of concern to be had here.  The defense couldn't tackle a fat man in a phone booth, looked slow and out of position, was less threatening than the kittens on Charles' memes, and now I hear our receivers were gaining zero separation.  And...sadly put me down in the column that believes DL made a mistake.  For multiple reasons Ty should have played the 4th quarter.  You've gotta keep this young man engaged in the game of football, and when Bo gets Nixed this year, your back-up has to come in ready to play.

To wrap this up with a positive bow, this was just one game...the first game...against not only a top-notch SEC team, but perhaps a top 2 team in the country.  The guys now have the opportunity to regroup and work on turning this thing around.  They just witnessed what the best in the country looks like.  I'll be curious to see how the team responds the next couple of weeks as I believe it will tell us a lot about the character of OBD.

As for Bo, I'd hold off on benching the guy based on the all-around dreadful team performance in this game.  View this as a truncated mean where the lowest evaluation and highest evaluation are discarded, because I can't imagine this team performing any worse.

  5. In answering this question, I’ll assume that his bad rap is based on the occasional (some say too often) lapse in decision making when trying to channel his inner-Favre.

Can he shake it, yes.  What helps it squelch it – winning.  Just like it was it was in the scorpion’s nature to sting, thus dooming himself and the frog, being a playmaker is in Bo’s nature.  I considered referring to Bo as a gunslinger, but that’s usually reserved as a descriptor for QB’s with howitzers for right arms.  Bo doesn’t really check’s that box, but there’s no denying his desire to be a playmaker.

Of all fanbases, the Oregon fanbase should know this best.  Going 13 of 31 with 2 interceptions would typically be registered as being just plain awful but can be easily overlooked when you toss a 26-yard game winning pass with nine seconds left.  Toward the end of that game, Bo was balancing on the razor’s edge of having what could only have been described as a disastrous debut, to being Johnny Clutch - Future Legend.  A college football playmaker was born.

If Bo gets under center on Oregon’s initial possession, I’ll trust that the UO staff is fully aware of Bo’s tendencies and have decided that he still gives the Ducks to best chance of winning.  In Lanning & Co. I trust.

While we are arm-chair quarterbacking, let’s be fair.  Let’s be sure we count the number of plays Bo extends with his legs and makes with his arm as we hold our breath until “Uh-Oh, Bo” comes out to play.

    We’re pulling for you Playmaker!

P.S.  Ty, if you get the starting nod, we’re pulling for you too, big guy.  Go Ducks!

Jester, back when they announced USC & UCLA to the Big Ten.  President Johnson made the statement that the Big Ten was not done expanding.  Many believed that was in reference to Notre Dame.

I am of the opinion it was not in reference to ND.  At that time, word was that Oregon and Washington had approached the Big Ten when they heard USC & UCLA to the Big Ten.  In the last week, word has come out that Oregon, and then Washington has had representatives meet with the Big Ten.

As I posted in an earlier thread & post, the Big Ten is slow when it comes to expansion.  They talk and they talk, they discuss and analyze the data.  This is what people in Academia do.  They try to come to a consensus.  Whenever you see a Big Ten vote, it is always unanimous when they announce it in public (even though in back rooms there may have been disagreement). When Penn State was added, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana were opposed.  It passed because Northwestern vote for it BUT on the condition that there was a pause on expansion (Texas came to the Big Ten at that time BUT the Big Ten honored Northwestern's request and paused).

It may seem like a long time.  But negotiations take time.  Look how long it took with USC and UCLA, months.

What people need to understand is that anyone coming to the Big Ten is buying into the Big Ten network.  Because of the LA market, USC & UCLA cover the buy in.  The reason for the buy in is over the first few years, Big Ten teams did not take any money but built equity.  When a new teams comes (Nebraska, Rutgers & Maryland) they bought in at a lessor amount to get an equal share of the network.

I can tell you based on the past, no school received less (usually more) than what it had in their old conference.  And usually the buy in is over about 5 years.  Escalates over the time period, ending in a full share.  This is part of what they are negotiating (has been in the past).

Also, even though USC & UCLA have been added, they don't have voting rights until they officially join the Big Ten.  And it also means that they do not have access to the Big Ten Academic Alliance (Academic arm of the Big Ten).

And I will leave you with this from 2013.

IOWA CITY – The Big Ten Conference boasts a financial model that no other college athletics association is willing to …

The 117-year-old league, of which the University of Iowa is a member, shares television and postseason revenue like many conferences. But the Big Ten also splits its football gate receipts from league games, a step devoid of other conferences. Thirty-five percent of Big Ten home gate receipts - with a $1 million cap and a $300,000 floor - goes to the league office. From there it's distributed into 12 equal pieces.

For Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta, sharing gate receipts is just one component of a much-larger revenue share within the conference.

“It's an all-in,” Barta said. “You can't fairly evaluate one without looking at the big picture. We choose to share revenue. There are areas where Iowa probably is a giver and there are areas where Iowa probably is a taker. In the long run, we all benefit.

“It's tempting to take one piece and want to evaluate it. But the only way to do it is to evaluate the conference as a whole.”

This is why the Big Ten will not have uneven revenue sharing where one school (Ohio State) will get more than another school (Indiana). Sorry to be long, just want to give you an idea of what you may be getting into.

    Good luck.

airspace - Not long at all, and appreciate your perspective!

As a Penn State guy, I wish you the best of luck with the Irish this weekend.  I just don't care for them.

Ducks fans, it may sound funny, but the #5 Irish are a bigger underdog against the #2 Buckeyes than UO is against GA.

It's not green, but I have to admit this is a good look.  It's not overly complicated.  The black pin-stripping on the pants and sleeves, the black number outline, and the black "G" give it just the right amount of zing.  Plus, that logo is just downright synonymous with winning football right now.  The red resembles like the blood that was in the water when the GA defense was on the field last year.  Let's hope that has mellowed just a tad.

She appropriately used "president speak" to comment on the recent inclusion of USC & UCLA into into the BIG, and what those two schools bring to the table academically, while ever-so-slightly referencing athletics.

The presidents statement was far from "the more-the-merrier" as the news anchor leads us to believe.

That being said, I do find it difficult to believe tOSU would object to adding schools that would make the BIG a better and/or more profitable conference.

  9. I'll go with a bootleg of some type.  I think Dilly's going to want to show immediately that the Duck QB is not going to be a stationary target, and he also may want to put a little pressure on the Dawg D.

A counter naked boot would be adventuresome against a disciplined defense like GA's, but maybe Dilly's a gambler.  Who knows?  Regardless, I think the QB rolls on play #1.

Just wait, we'll all be on the edge of seats and the Ducks will run a dive up the A gap on the right side for .5 yards.  The ghost of MC lingers.

  10. Not too sure about the USC fan base, but big market media outlets are driving me nuts.

With people like Cowherd, I used to be able to change the channel when I thought they were on a tireless rant I didn’t agree with.  I would wait a few minutes, and then tune back in.  Now, I check in about once a week, and I’ll be darned if I don’t hear someone praising USC within half an hour.

Just past 3PM (EST) today I tuned in to Fox Sports radio just in time to hear the host asking a guest two questions.  He asked which team will be the most intriguing to watch this year, and he asked which team will be the surprising team of the year?  Not only was the answer to both questions USC, but the notable guest writer also commented that the Trojans will push, if not be in, the top 5 by season’s end!

I live on the east coast, so at a local level I’m not inundated with Trojan love, but man, the folks that cover college football nationally have just been over-the-top.

Given the cornucopia of pre-season accolades being piped specifically into the west coast , I wouldn't be surprised if Trojan fan is just basically unbearable right now.

There’s a pretty big difference between walking into a locker room for the first time as a green-behind-the-ears freshman, and as a welcomed, seasoned veteran

The above statement makes complete sense in reference to an experienced player, but Travis decided to take it one step further.

Being the veteran that he is, he’s taken part in many interviews, and understands that his words carry weight and will be displayed for all to see.  The “I didn’t know any better, that's not what I meant” card is no longer at his disposal.

Being complimentary of your new team is part of the game.  It makes you a member of the club and shows that you are all-in with the “us against the world” mentality.  I get it.

Where I take issue (just an observation, really) with his comment is when he chooses to make a comparison.  This is blatant and comes across as being passive-aggressive in nature.  When he added, “better than any other group I’ve been part of” to his statement, that was pretty much an eye-poke at Oregon without having the nerve to directly say so.

Someone suggested that we be the bigger person here.  Well, physically in comparison to that lilliputian, mid-1970’s Gabe Kaplan style mustache having backstabber - I am...by a couple phonebook thicknesses.

This may read as if I’m bitter about Dye’s departure.  I’m actually very happy with our current RB room and I typically wouldn’t even bother to voice an opinion on this guy.  Guess there’s just something special in the air today.

If I've never mentioned it, "Good riddance, Travis".  I’m sure you’re fitting right in at the University of Sneaky Conspirators.

Any endeavor, no matter how painstakingly thorough the preparation, can end in failure.

That being said, at this moment I don’t think we could have expected any more than what we’ve seen from DL, and all indicators are pointing in a very positive direction.

I’m cautiously optimistic that the Ducks will be a force under DL’s supervision.

  14. Two things make this simple for me.

I’m two hours from Beaver Stadium, and I’m a White-Out veteran.  I strongly encourage anyone that has to opportunity to attend a White-Out game to please do so.

If you’re into stadium amenities and extras – this ain’t it.  If you want the ultimate college game day environment - this is it.

The Ducks going to the BIG is still such a pipe dream to me that I haven't put any thought into this potential match-up.

I do agree with your take on Riley.  I would have been thrilled to have him in Eugene, and I think in short order he will make that team very formidable.

I'm actually one of the not-so-popular posters when it comes to predicting the Ducks record this season as I see them at 8-4.  Now, if the Ducks prove me wrong and make it to the conference championship, I would wager that they would win.  Getting to that point would be confirmation that the DL hire and Bo Nix (or whoever) experiment was a success.

Lot of folks on this board see it that way, and I hope they are right.

21 TDs with 4 INTs in 8 games on 211 attempts. If extrapolated (dubious, at best, for predicting) over the entire year (assumed 13 games), key stats:  34 TDs with 7 INTs

    - CW threw a TD pass every 10 attempts with an approximate 4.9 to 1 TD to INT ratio.

Yes, I’ll give you the nod that he amassed decent numbers while running the gauntlet of Western Carolina, K-State, Texas (still can’t play defense), TCU, Kansas, and Texas-Tech.  That looks even worse digitally than it sounds verbally.  Lol.

But…you can’t ignore what happened against Top 20 (2 game sample), in conference, competition.  I watched both those games (loses), and was surprised that Williams' stat lines were as good as they were.  3TD's and 2 Pics while completing a frog's hair over 50 percent (50.7%) of his passes.  Defenses turned the heat up and the young man (like most) panicked.

The reality is we can sit hear and pull fly crap sized offensive statistics out of pepper all day, but we got to remember these QB's are going to line-up against someone on the other side of the ball.  Given that Captain Obvious statement, when comparing UO to USC, who's defensive unit do you believe will provide more resistance to opposing offenses?  At the end of the day, the answer to that question may play the biggest role in deciding the conference pecking order, and I haven't heard that Williams and/or Nix are being considered for two-way duty.

That last paragraph was for me because I occasionally neglect the fact that offenses have to work against an opposing force.

  18. Wow.  If this guy is the measuring stick for being a Trojans Wire contributor, our local middle school is loaded with current candidates.  Was he drunk?  There is really nothing useful in this 30 sec. read of useless word-vomit.

The guy puts Celeb Williams on a pedestal, makes four weak food comparisons, and then slightly takes his foot off the accelerator by conceding that Box Nix could exceed expectations (“Maybe that will happen”), and sheepishly concludes with a proposition to lay a few $20’s on the game.

So, let’s take a quick look at the Grand Canyonesque disparity in just a few key 2021 passing stats between the two of them.

    Caleb – 174.1 yds./game, 64.5% completion, 211 attempts – 4 Int’s

    Bo – 229.4 yds./game, 61.0% completion, 323 attempts – 3 Int’s

Of course, I cherry-picked a couple categories but with the obvious chasm between the playing abilities of Lord Williams, Duke of Los Angles, and Peasant Boy Bo, I would hope to see sizable gaps in ANY statistical category that favor LA’s knight in shining armor.  By the way, what’s the curve for putting up stats against SEC competition vs. doing it in a conference where defense is optional for a few teams?

Me personally, I like what Wonder Boy did his last 3 regular season games (Baylor, ISU, and Ok. St.) of ’21 vs. adequate opponents.  Come get some of this stat line, Tommy Trojan.

CW went 37 of 75 (49%), 4 TD’s & 3 Pics, 160.3 yds./game, with an astonishing QBR of 63.7.  Gosh guys, he’s so good he threw the ball with his left hand in these games just to make things fair!

I’m not suggesting the kid is not good.  He was the 2nd ranked QB coming out of high school and does show moments of solid to excellent QB play.  To me there’s just not enough consistency in his game to break-out the anointing oils.

As for Matt Zemek’s proposition of laying a few $20’s, I’ll make it a few $50’s with one caveat.  MZ comments on finishing behind Oregon, so I assume he’s alluding to the regular season.  That’s not good enough.  My wager would be on the two playing head-to-head in the conference championship.  If that were to happen, then I would say Bo exceeded expectations, and with help of his Duck cohorts, they will deliver well-deserved Trojan beatdown.

MZ – thanks for giving me a midday work break, and I look forward to scanning your next release of drunken musings from a shameless Trojan.

  19. I'm thinking Andrew’s take on Bo’s comments say more about Andrew than Bo.

The only thing “awkward” is how poorly Bo’s comments were transcribed.  Bo’s reference to the “O” gives us insight into the respect he (Bo) has for the program and that he understands Oregon’s stature in the college football community.  Does he hint at Oregon having a path to the CFP – yes.  But doesn’t that accompany being a P5 team that plays for conference titles?  As Bo says, “why not Oregon”.

My Auburnese is a little rusty, but here’s my advice for Andrew.

“Move on.  I understand you’re jealously because Bo is playing part of a team that has you’re in a year out has a chance to be in the four of the final.  Your and many of you War Eagle dips of sticks had been taking way too time and time and energy worrying about Bo.  Get it over.”

Wow!  That was tougher than I thought, but luckily, I retained a lot of what I learned from my time working in Alabama. Roll Tide!
