this says something to me about the absurdity of all the focus of the TV networks on markets. Oh, you have to get the teams from the large markets.
Here are teams from Columbus, OH, a good but not great market, and Eugene, OR a nice small city in western Oregon. They have the most watched game in the B1G in 18 years. Wow.
Good exciting football will get you market share. Oregon has had that in great abundance for a long time now. That's why people like me living in Ohio and now Maryland are Oregon fans.

A few observations.
Though the stats were fairly close, Oregon won every meaningful stat (including the score), even if by a small margin. If I looked at the box not actually knowing the score I would have thought Ducks 38 useless nuts 28.
The nickel and dime stuff I was worried about (and stated the Duck could not beat OSU with) seems to thankfully be gone. It's still not 25 yards in a cloud of dust early Kelly stuff (you couldn't do that vs OSU either) but they took shots down field successfully, stretched the D in every direction and got big plays when big plays were needed. Well done!
Having lived in Ohio for the better part of 7 years of my life (I'm in Maryland now, maybe I should change my name on here) and knowing some OSU fans that are most great people and knowledgeable football fans, they will tell you the Ryan Day getting out coached is not unusual. Even in games they win they somehow have made games a lot closer then they should have vs far inferior players. I've scratched my head often about that. He gets great players and wins a lot of games, but eventually he has to beat that team up north or he will not last much longer.
That said, yes DL out coached Day. He made some good decisions, maybe some very crafty next level ones. It's good to see he's growing as a head coach!
There is a lot of exciting football left this season. I have to get back on cable or find a streaming service to watch it now.

There has been a lot of turnover and to think that everything works smoothly even with plugging in player who may ultimately be just as good just isn't true.
My concern is somewhat from a fan's point of view. It sometimes looks like the offense is more designed to break records for completion percentage (not necessarily a bad thing) than moving down the field and putting pressure on the opposing D. It looked like that at times last year too.
Maybe I'm just missing the days of hurry up offense, chunk plays and 3 and 4 play scoring drives. That's what made me a Duck fan. Now I'm hooked for life, but I still would like to see a little more of what brought me here. There just doesn't seem to a lot of aggressiveness in the offensive game plan.

An alliance between the B1G and SEC ought to be met with an anti-trust law suit from someone. This movement toward consolidation to one big (not B1G) conference already has me caring less and less about college sports. Of course this seems to mostly be a scheduling agreement, but is it just the start? Where is the Big 12 in this, and other smaller conferences?

Yeah, this definitely has the potential for a trap game. This is not one of the best MSU teams to take the field, but there is a lot of pride in that program and after the loss to OSU where they were pretty much dominated in every phase of the game, they may come out pretty fired up.
I'm still thinking 3+ touchdown Oregon win, but I won't be surprised if MSU hangs with the Ducks early.

After week two, I won't say disappointed, but concerned is the word. A not dominant performance vs Idaho and squeaker vs Boise was not what I was expecting. The Ducks have improved the last two games. Boise is proving to be a better quality opponent than it seemed at the time, but I'm still a bit puzzled by the Idaho performance.
Some have mentioned a lack of going very deep into the play book, I hope so because the offense has looked like it is being built on nickel and diming rather than attacking aggressively, going for chunk plays, keeping the D on their heals and taking advantage of that, what I've come to think of as Oregon offense.
We won't beat OSU by nickel and diming.
That said, there is still enough talent to contend for a NC. In two weeks we'll know more about if the team is ready. Being 6-0 in a couple of weeks will cure a lot of disappointment!

Wow, been out of touch for a while. No TV options recently to watch the Ducks, so highlights and box scores are all I have.
Good to hear that the O-line improved vs. the Beavers. I thought the game would be a little closer and figured something good came together for the Ducks when I saw the score.
I was concerned seeing the boxes of the first two games. Looked like a lot of complete passes for not that much yardage and the running game wasn't producing so well either. I wonder how many shots have been taken down field. We certainly have the receivers to do that, has their just not been enough time to set it up? I'm really asking here because I haven't seen the whole games. I was afraid Stein in all his brilliance (not kidding here I think he is brilliant) was falling in love with the nickel and dime stuff.
Glad to see Gabriel running some too. That has often been what opened up the Duck's offense.
In any case, the players are certainly there for this offense to be one of the best in college football. Here's hoping the O-line continues to improve. Everything else seems to be in place.

But I've been reliably informed by national media and other prominent head coaches that Oregon is only recruiting well because of NIL money, and that they have "infinite" money.
If that's the case, then they should win every recruiting battle for "infinity", right?
Also, an OBD poster made a comment I liked: "Let's stop using the word 'commitment' for all these early verbal promises."
What word / phrase should we use instead?
I like the following:
- 4 Star WR out of California "conditionally" commits to Oregon.
- Amazing get for Dan Lanning!! The Ducks "secure" the "provisional" commitment from Blue-chip, 5-Star defensive lineman from Louisiana.
Yeah, it's pretty obvious from the amount of flipping going on, commitment doesn't mean commitment anymore.

Thank you, NJ. For this and all of the other great posts.
5 years. These days in CFB who the heck knows where the game itself will be in 5 years? In close to 5 years we (I may be stretching it with the 'we?') will see at least 2 new significant events, the renegotiation of the B1G media deal, with Oregon as a full partner, and the Playoff media broadcast deal also renegotiated with the new deal beginning in 2031/32. I doubt that in the next half-decade, we will see stasis in the conference realignment, NIL, direct pay-for-play, players as employees, how the product will be delivered, etc. fronts.
DeBoer, Freeze, Kiff, Sark, and Smart. Based on the pressure in the SEC, I wonder how many of these men will still be coaching in the SEC 5 years from now? Is there room for all five of these guys to be successful in the SEC along with the coaches at A+M, Florida, Oklahoma, and other SEC teams? The Dixie standard is Natty or Bust. In the next five seasons, I do not see all five of these coaches winning a CFB playoff title. Norvell? Where will the Seminoles be chopping? In the easier ACC, the SEC, or elsewhere? Perhaps the B1G if FSU can capture an AAU ranking.
If Big Time CFB continues to coalesce, as is likely, there will be fewer jobs for the more talented coaches; possibly without the parity guardrails built into the NFL. Even with the guardrails, Kansas City is odds-on to play in its 5th Super Bowl in 6 seasons in 2024/25. Lots of quality, experienced coaches do not win titles or win half their games or more. Boil CFB down to say, 32 to 40 teams and how much room will there be at the top?
Dan Lanning? I won't, of course, argue with a Natty in the next five seasons. It is certainly doable with Dan at the helm. At 37 years of age, is Dan a CFB lifer? Win a Natty or two, kids grown up and gone, will Dan hear the NFL sirens calling? Have to love the man's loyalty. Turning down Bama? Wow. But if Ryan Day heads off to the pros and Dan receives an offer closer to his midwest growing-up place? And bless him and I am certain that Phil Knight will take care of Oregon after departing this mortal coil, but 5 years from now Uncle Phil will be 91. The world could look different to a 42-year-old Danno.
Change is permanent. And in this wired world we live in today, change seems to be accelerating. Any prediction 5 years out that materializes will take one heck of a futurist and a lot of good fortune, a/k/a luck.
Yeah, I know it's hard to project out one year and this is three, but I could see none of these coaches being where they are now. I hope Lanning is still at Oregon and think that's a good possibility.
Day, frankly I'm not that impressed with him and wouldn't include him in my top 5. OSU will not be satisfied if he doesn't have them at the top of the B1G and with at least one NC, I'm not sure he will get that done.
Smart as 1, I get, but will he still be at UG?
Norvell will be good at FSU, but will the weaker ACC get him the recruits and seeding in the play offs he needs?
Sark doesn't have a track record of sticking around long term, maybe that changes at TX maybe not.
I actually think Lanning is the best possibility of being where he is and being this successful of the 5 of these.
But as I said, 5 years is a long time in college football right now.

Very good player, probably got away with holding/PI more than any other DB in the country, hopefully he'll get the same favorable call if goes to the Ducks.
Remember we're going to the B1G, look at how the Michigan DBs played against UW. They don't call much in the B1G. I wish they called more personally.

Ryan Day is considered a failure. Let that sink in. The man is 55-8, had the defending and eventual champion Georgia on the ropes. Missed a field goal that would have got them into a game with TCU. They we would've won that game.
Ten years ago Oregon would be ecstatic with the two seasons we just witnessed. But it was a letdown for us. We know Oregon has the roster to beat Michigan. We are disappointed with a top ten finish. We are disappointed in losing to a team up north. Three straight losses, it has to end next November.
Seems to be a lot of parallels between the two programs. Both should make the playoff next year. How crazy would it be to have three matchups this upcoming season? Oregon wins the first, Ohio State wins the conference title game. Oregon wins the National Title. Let the hate flow through the Buckeyes as they beat Michigan, only to find out they have another team they should need to focus on.
That team out west.

I think the regular season best record comes down to the game between Oregon and OSU at Oregon.
Though on paper and preseason the Useless Nuts schedule looks easier, I don't see a game on either's schedule they shouldn't win.
Of course should win and winning can be two different things. The B1G will be an adventure for sure.
Go Ducks!

DeBoer may have jumped from a great situation to a difficult one. UW fans would be crazy in love with him for years, for one NC game appearance.
Now he is in a place following a legit legend. He will have great resources, tradition and brand, but the expectations are not a NC game appearance every now and then. The expectations are winning NC games on a regular basis. If you don't...
He may well be up to the challenge, he's a good coach. He proved that the last few years at UW.
But if he stumbles out of the gate, he could have a difficult time.

Okay, I have to admit this. I love the Ducks, but it is going to be hard to switch conference loyalties from the PAC to the B1G (or as I call it The Big Slow and Ugly Conference). I've seen the B1G as over rated in just about everything for decades now.
Yes, in OSU and that team up north are usually good, but the rest of the conference is usually mediocre. Basketball, the whole conference is mediocre. I think the 4 teams coming in from the West Coast just may come in and be among the top 6 teams with OSU and Mic... can't say it.
In basketball, it could be similar. All four West Coast teams should be in the top half of the B1G.
The one advantage the B1G has had is money. They have not been innovative, usually with teams (in most sports) built more around power than speed and skill and often just tend to be as Coach Gains described the Veer offense in Remember the Titans, "Like Novocaine. it will lull you to sleep but effective."
Hopefully the West Coast bunch will add a little excitement, and it won't be too bad.

Ohio State has the best defense in the nation. If their offense was as good, they'd be in this position.
I thought Washington choked. Dropped passes, penalties, and Penix finally lost his composure.
Michigan forced the issue, but plays were left on the field, and UW didn't continue the strategy they used to close within seven at halftime.
I expected much more swing routes to the RBs and WRs. Setting up fakes to those areas and quick strikes downfield along the sidelines. UW actually did that to Texas, and I expected more of that. And those vaunted curl routes to the TE they used against OBD.
OBD are capable of handling all the playoff teams, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Missouri. That slow start in the Conference Title Game hurt our shot at taking this physical brand on. OBD have an offense that can handle these elite teams.
I like Michigan. I think you can drop thirty on them. Washington showed you can. I'm sure plenty disagree. I'd love a shot at that defense. They can be forced to deal with what their aggression leaves available. It's there for the taking.
That's why I'm not a fan of repeating the same plays over and over again in practice. My philosophy is give them looks so you can take what they give you, which means my OC is using ALL 195 plays in his playbook.
But that's just me.
Pretty much my take. Taking nothing away from that team up north, the pups beat themselves. Open receivers were missed all game, passes were dropped and if it weren't for holding that team up north couldn't cover anyone at all. I was actually rooting for UW. Even if it's them, it would have been nice for the PAC to go out with a NC.
