The defense is going to be a major project.

We complain about how bad it is right now but the sad truth is that this defense has had the same problems for the last three years.

I feel like Lanning is addressing the issue with recruiting but at this time we don't have the players capable of making this defense better for whatever reason.

These players have the same problems for three years with three different DCs!

A lot do that is due to the fact that premier defensive linemen have been leaving the West coast for the BIG10 and South.  San Diego State being added to the conference isn’t going make it better. JTT is at Ohio State and Jayden Wayne left for Miami. No scheme is going to fix not having talent on the DL. In 2019 Oregon was carried by their defense with AA coaching them. They were 13th in the nation and 1st In the conference in overall defense.

What?  Must *cheat or perish?  Perish the thought!

Lupoi was let go under a cloud at three different schools, Cal, Washington and Alabama.  Now he has Lanning convinced this is how to win?  If it's true (and that's far from proven) then I don't care what Lanning's record is at Oregon.  I'd rather he move elsewhere.  Let's wait til we find out the truth.

I guess that would be satisfactory for some.  💁‍♂️

If this is true then I don't like it - not one bit.  Tosh Lupoi was caught doing that when the D.C. at Cal - against Oregon!!!  His coach reprimanded him for it.  It's one of the reasons I'm not a fan of Lupoi.  Lord, I don't want to think Dan Lanning is the same kind of person.  It's wrong!

I don’t have a problem with is. So many programs using spread uptempo and the rules now favoring the offense more and more. Defenses can’t even tackle a quarterback without the player getting kicked out the game and I don’t trust the incompetent Pac-12 referees. Saban’s teams do it. Dani’s teams do it. Even Kirby’s teams did it in the national title game when Bama had a chance to change the game. Must adapt or perish.

But the question is why is TT (or Jay Butterfield for that matter) not ready to step up when needed?  Remember, the Next Man Up mantra.  What has Lanning not done, if anything, to not have a backup QB with 5-stars affixed to his name ready to lead his team when needed?

Perhaps he's not very coach able. Perhaps he simply doesn't have the "IT" factor the way 5 star Spencer Rattler got overtaken by freshman Caleb Williams at Oklahoma. Spencer is still a horrible quarterback at South Carolina after transferring from Oklahoma. 247 talent evaluators don't always get it right. If you go and analyze the recruiting rankings going back 15 years you will see plenty of 5 stars who never panned out.

I don't think that's the best strategy honestly, the BIG has similar problems go check their fan sites for clips of crazy ref stuff.

Are you aware that there's a massive shortage of football officials for high-school football?  That absolutely has an impact on CFB with crews bringing in qualified replacements for retiring officials.  I'm a big big believer in cleaning up officiating to improve the game and to do that it's going to require the conference to invest money and time in officiating.

We need professional sports officials and the best way to do that is for the professional, college and high-school sports to establish a national organization for officiating.  I know there are organizations but they are fragmented.  We need a better resourced and MUCH better led organization.  That organization should get resources from all levels for the recruiting, training and evaluation of sports officiating.

The Big10 & SEC have quietly been hiring the top rated referees from the other conferences through increased salary. I cannot wait until that invitation in a few years during expansion movement again.

  6. Might be time for the program to allocate NIL resources towards defensive lineman and edge rushers. Atheltic corners and linebackers are a dime a dozen out west but premier pass rushers & line stuffers are a scarce commidity especially west of the Rockies.

Isn't that ironic?  We finally get a defensive-minded HC, and our defense takes a step back, without guys like KT to shoulder the load.

Is it just a matter of DL and Lupoi getting the players they need to run the SEC-like type of defense or are they calling an ultra conservative game, which doesn't put our players in a position to make a play on the ball?  They are always start lined up, too far away to make a play on the ball.  I don't know if its due to poor instincts or running the zone defense. By the time they react, the receiver or back is flying past them.

Reminds me a little of Bob Stoops. He was a defensive coach and the DC for Spurrier when the Gators won the title in 1996. His long tenure at OU wasn't known for defense. Being a defensive coach is not the same as being the head coach.

  8. Oregon needs to leave the Pac-12 so they simply don’t keep getting screwed over by these referees. The incompetence is astounding. Every season the low quality of refereeing costs Oregon. How much money have these referees costs the conference payout. Too tired to do the math tonight but it’s easy to calculate. The BIG10 pays their referees and invests in them. This conference does no such thing. Can’t wait for the eventual invitation. Good Riddance Pac-12

  9. USC is going to have a hard time replacing Dye's production and leadership.  When the passing game wasn't productive they would lean on him heavily as their bellcow.  The depth behind him is not great.  Addison, their top wideout is also not 100% after missing several games due to injury.

They have some depth at receiver with Kyle Ford, Mario Williams and Tahj Washington, but Addison, the reigning Biletnikoff award winner, was the best of the bunch.  He did not look like himself against Colorado with only one reception for two yards. I'm taking UCLA depending on the line set after they play Arizona.

  10. You could add DJU from Clemson to that meme as well. Consensus 5 Star blur chip rated QB. Talk about a disappointment. I expect he hits the transfer portal after Clemson is done this season. His brother Matayeo being a 5 star defensive end Oregon is recruiting this cycle could play a factor. DJ grew up loving Oregon and rooting for Masoli & Mariota. Could be his chance to get his career back on track to get to the NFL.
