Ohio State’s D is stout but Iowa is not known for offense. Oregon will have to pass downfield to open up the running game and short pass/screen game, IMHO. We’ll see if DG is able to hit on a couple of downfield throws. As we have discussed on other threads, I hope that Coach Stein opens up the playbook and that T. Ferg. and E. Stew. are a bigger part of the offense against Ohio State.

The interview is worth watching if you want to learn more about Coach Lanning's background and mindset. It's the most comfortable and open I've seen him. Oregon is very fortunate to have such a wonderful person leading our program and I can see why recruits and the team can really connect with him, as a person.

Terrance Ferguson has been a part of some great offenses over the years and says that this year’s Oregon offense is the “best offense I've been a part of" (at the end of the interview). We have weapons everywhere and it’s like playing a video game when they are clicking. The stats to date don’t back it up but perhaps he is seeing what they are capable of in practice, behind closed doors, and, hopefully, we’ll all see more starting on Saturday against a really good Ohio State defense? Obviously, the first 2 1/2 games were working out the kinks on the offensive line. The last couple of games Oregon took the foot off the gas in the second half but the offense could have scored more if not for turnovers in the red zone. This offense has a lot more potential than it has shown to date.

I agree that all college referees should be hired, trained, evaluated and paid for by the NCAA (and not individual conferences). There are too many examples of favoritism to protect the top teams/programs in college football.

I hope you're right. E. Stew. is a fantastic weapon and has been underutilized to date, as has T. Ferg.

I agree with you but, at this point, it seems like Congress is going to have to pass a bill on some of the issues plaguing college football. One possible solution is that you let a player transfer one time, for any reason, without having to sit out and then they reinstate the rule that the player has to sit out a year the next time they want to transfer. You could waive the one year waiting period for the second transfer, if the player graduates from his prior school to encourage graduation. To me, the bigger issue is the unlimited and highly secretive NIL deals. Teams should have salary caps. Eventually, if the players create a union, they may want to place limits on max. NIL earnings, especially for freshman (like the NFL does with rookie contracts).

Hopefully Evan Stewart (aka E. Stew.) will be "full go" against Ohio State this weekend, after leaving the Michigan State game with an apparent injury (anyone have any updates on his status?). Watch the above video and please explain to me why Oregon hasn't been pushing the ball downfield to E. Stew.? The dude makes ridiculous catches and 50/50 balls 80/20. Time to "unleash E. Stew.!!!"

Oregon should hire the Vegas ring announcer for the start of the game! I wonder how many NFL scouts will be at the game in Eugene on Saturday? Talent all over the field for both teams…

This is a great observation and I have thought the same the past two games. Coach Lanning said that he talked with NFL teams about the long season. It appears that he is rotating more players in the game to limit the wear and tear over a long season and once we have a lead, he is content in running out the clock (vs. running up the margin of victory for “style” points). Oregon could have beaten both UCLA and MSU by more, if we wanted to. Hopefully it’ll pay dividends later in the season.

I really hope Coach Stein involves Ferguson heavily in the passing game against Ohio State. He is such a good weapon and is nearly unguardable. Oregon had a long string of TEs that had successful careers in the NFL. T. Furg. is as good as any of them, especially as a down field receiver.

If Oregon loses a close game, we should remain in the top 5 (Oregon's lone loss would be "better" than any other team's). However, if we are blown out at home (and look bad doing so), we could drop out of the top 10. Luckily, there is still plenty of time to climb back up the standings before the playoffs.

Very good examples, Charles. It's great to see our young coaches learning from past shortcomings and making adjustments. It's also wonderful to see Oregon run the ball on those critical 3rd or 4th and short plays, as I believe that they have a higher conversion rate. In the first play you highlighted, it appears that the Michigan State defender (#27?) would have been in a position to make the play, if he didn't bite on the misdirection or was more athletic to recover. I'm sure that Ohio State will be coaching the backside help to freeze and, even if they take a step in the wrong direction, their 5-star athletes will be quick enough to recover (then it's a just a matter of who wins the 1:1 battle). It'll be interesting to see if Coach Stein has a counter to this play against Ohio State. As I mentioned above, I'm really interested to see if Oregon opens up a more intermediate passing attack or has some counters to the wide receiver bubble screens. I would expect Ohio State to crowd the line of scrimmage and play press coverage with their CBs until Oregon proves that they can beat them. Go Ducks!!! Saturday can't come soon enough...

Coach Lanning said that the coaches made the decision to hold back some things in the second half of the UCLA game due to the score. I'm assuming that it was the same with the Michigan State game. Hopefully, we see more of an intermediate passing attack and some counters off of the bubble/wide receiver screens against the Buckeyes.
