Class of 2023 Ducks: News, Announcements, Awards, etc.

Oregon Spring Preview: O-Line a Mix of Returners and Newcomers A'lique Terry will spend the spring mixing and matching. We're continuing our Oregon Ducks football spring preview with a look at the offensive. It's a position that's seen a lot of change this offseason both from a coaching and personnel standpoint. Adrian Klemm is out and A'lique Terry is in, with veteran offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh coming to Eugene with him to lend a hand Almost all of Oregon's starting offensive line from a year ago is gone--with Alex Fosyth, Ryan Walk, T.J. Bass and Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu all taking their shot at the 2023 NFL Draft. But the cupboard is far from bare in Eugene despite a massive wave of departures. There's definitely a theme of a new wave along Oregon's offensive line in 2023. After being a model of consistency for the past three or so years the loss of multiple veterans will shake up the group. https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/college/article273094710.html#storylink=rss -

Redshirt Review: Kawika Rogers Today, we'll continue the series with offensive lineman Kawika Rogers. Recruiting Ranking — 820th overall in 2022 247Sports Composite / 68th best offensive tackle prospect Games played in 2022 — Two. What he brings to the table — Standing 6-foot-5, Rogers has a great frame for the position and carries his listed weight (334 pounds) well. Despite playing tackle in high school and being projected by recruiting services there, he worked primarily at guard last season. Of his 15 snaps in 2022, 12 came at left guard. Rogers has the versatility to play right tackle as well — the position he played for the other three snaps. https://247sports.com/college/oregon/article/redshirt-review-kawika-rogers-206363207/

Oregon Spring Ball Position Battles: How will rebuilt linebacker crew look in 2023? The Oregon Ducks went into the 2022 season with what many considered the best linebacker group in the nation, led by veteran Noah Sewell and breakout candidate Justin Flowe. Unfortunately, Flowe never reached his potential thanks in part to injuries, and while Sewell was solid – the unit as a whole was disappointing. Now both Sewell and Flowe are out the door, Sewell to join his brother Penei in the NFL and Flowe to the Arizona Wildcats via the NCAA transfer portal. However, Oregon’s linebacker group in 2023 is still expected to produce for coach Dan Lanning, with a few veteran returners like Jeffrey Bassa, transfer portal additions, and up and coming recruits ready to contribute in Eugene. Spring is the chance for some of those younger players to earn a role this fall, and it gives those transfer additions a chance to acclimate to a new defensive system before the season gets underway. Below is a look at the likely candidates to battle for a significant role on Lanning’s defense this spring. Oregon Spring Ball Position Battles: How will rebuilt LB crew look? DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM The Oregon Ducks lost a lot of talent in the linebacker room this offseason, but they have plenty of options to fill those roles in camp. -
Live Updates: Oregon baseball shoots for series victory over No. 16 UCLA Oregon will send freshman RHP Leo Uelmen (1-1, 2.51 ERA) to the mound, squaring off against UCLA's ace, RHP Alonzo Tredwell (2-0, 1.06 ERA). "The guy's got a bazooka, and he'll run the ball up to 96-97 miles an hour with a heck of a breaking ball," said head coach Mark Wasikowski on Tredwell. "People need to come out and watch that guy pitch, and hopefully, the Ducks beat him. I mean, he's really good, and we're gonna need to be on our game not only against him but their Sunday starters really good too. I mean, UCLA has done a nice job of accumulating pitching, and coach Savage is very good at what he does. And so we need to be on point for us to be able to beat good programs, and they're a good program." The Ducks' offense did its job in game one of the three-game series, sending home six runs, including a pair of two-run homers from Jacob Walsh and Owen Diodati. Both came on opposite field blasts, something the Ducks have been working on the last two series. Oregon will look to put the ball in play as often as possible on Saturday, as Tredwell sports a 26/4 strikeout-to-walk ratio this year. Live Updates: Oregon baseball shoots for series victory over No. 16 UCLA 247SPORTS.COM Fresh off a 6-2 victory on Friday night against No. 16 UCLA (10-3, 0-1), the Oregon Ducks (9-3, 1-0) are looking to earn a series victory heading into their Saturday afternoon

Wooten is listed two inches shorter on Oregon's roster than he was as a recruit (from 6-foot-6 to 6-foot-4), but possesses enough size regardless. Top-10 RB Jeremy Payne puts Oregon among top schools in 2024 The Oregon Ducks have a strong history at the running back position over the past several decades, and that hasn’t changed at all under Carlos Locklyn, who took over as the RB coach under Dan Lanning in 2022. The Ducks have brought a number of highly-rated RBs to Eugene over the past couple of seasons, landing guys like Jordan James, Dante Dowdell, and Jayden Limar in the recruiting world, while also bringing Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington to Eugene via the transfer portal. It appears that Oregon is in good shape going forward, as well, landing among the top schools for 2024 4-star RB Jeremy Payne. Standing at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Payne is rated as the No. 10 RB in the class, and No. 153 overall player in the nation, per 247Sports. The Ducks extended an offer to Payne back in December of last year, and have not yet received a visit from the Texas back. We will likely see that change going forward. Oregon Spring Ball Player Spotlight: Austin Novosad and the future of the Ducks' QB position The Oregon Ducks will be taking the practice field and getting the spring football season started a week from today. This fact has brought a ton of excitement to Eugene. Why? Because after the successful and encouraging 2022 season under Dan Lanning, there seems to be more anticipation surrounding this program than we’ve seen in the past few seasons. The Ducks have a Heisman contender at quarterback, a potential Biletnikoff contender at wide receiver, and a running back group that could be among the best in the nation next season. On the defensive side of the ball, there are some key returning starters in the front seven, a couple of promising up-and-coming players in the secondary, and a handful of intriguing transfer-portal players who could end up making a massive difference for Oregon. On top of all of that, the Ducks are fresh off of back-to-back top-15 recruiting classes, stacking the roster with young, unproven talent. It’s safe to say that there are a handful of guys that we can’t wait to see take the field in Eugene. To kick off our preview of some of these players, we wanted to focus on QB Austin Novosad, a 4-star player from the 2023 class who flipped to Oregon late in the game, choosing Will Stein and the Ducks over the Baylor Bears. Here’s our breakdown of the young QB who could end up giving a glimpse of what’s to come this spring in Eugene. The Hype Going into Spring Oregon Football: Can Austin Novosad show flashes of future in spring? DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM There are a handful of Ducks we can’t wait to see once spring ball starts. QB Austin Novosad is near the top of the list. -
Transfer Portal: Players of Interest

Where Oregon's 2023 transfers rank among the nation's top 150 Do you remember back to the end of the 2022 calendar year when the transfer portal window opened up and Oregon Duck fans started to feel a bit uneasy? It’s understandable why, as a number of players on the current roster — like Byron Cardwell, Dont’e Thornton, Justin Flowe, and so on — announced they would be entering the transfer portal. Some thought that it showed players didn’t want to play at Oregon, while others realized that the Ducks were simply making way for a crop of players better suited to Dan Lanning’s system to come to Eugene. It appears now that the latter half of thinkers were correct, with a birds-eye-view showing us that the talent level on Oregon’s roster has vastly improved this offseason. The best way to see this is by looking at the latest transfer portal rankings from 247Sports. Of the 10 transfers that the Ducks added this offseason, 6 ranked inside the top 150. Contrarily, of the 22 players who transferred out of Eugene, only 2 ranked inside the top 150. It’s not hard to do the math and see that Oregon got better. So where did all of the Oregon players, both outgoing and incoming, rank among the 247Sports top 150? Let’s take a look. ESPN names Oregon's 'newcomer to watch' prior to the start of spring practice ESPN previewed spring practice for every Pac-12 team on Wednesday. That included Oregon, which is looking to build off of a 9-3 campaign in Dan Lanning’s first season at the helm. The Ducks were rolling until a late-season injury to quarterback Bo Nix preceded losses in two of their last three regular-season games. A big reason for the success up to that point was Oregon’s ability to keep Nix upright and free from any danger. With a huge piece of that offensive line moving on from the program, Oregon’s strength up front will be a major storyline throughout the offseason. ESPN’s writers seem to feel the same. ESPN analysts picked a “newcomer to watch” for each team in the league. For the Ducks, it’s a transfer on the offensive line. Here’s what Kyle Bonagura wrote: Cornelius was one of two transfer offensive linemen to join the program this offseason, alongside former Texas lineman Junior Angilau. Jason Zandamela on A’lique Terry, Oregon Interest The Ducks are pursuing a top offensive lineman from Florida in the 2024 class. When Dan Lanning hired A'lique Terry, his fire on the recruiting trail was something that immediately stood out. He played a big role in the Ducks recruiting Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 2021 class when he was on the staff under Mario Cristobal and he's gotten right to work since rejoining the Ducks. One of the players he has his eye on is 2024 interior offensive lineman Jason Zandamela from Clearwater (Fla.) Clearwater International Academy, who was offered by Adrian Klemm. The 6-foot-3, 286-pound lineman is originally from Mozambique and moved to the U.S. prior to the 2022 season. He spoke with John Garcia Jr. at the Under Armour Next camp in Orlando and has started to build a relationship with Terry at Oregon. "Coach Terry recently got hired. He's a Florida guy. Spoke to him. I love how he talks. He's very straight up about everything and he's gonna be real with you as well," Zandamela said." https://www.heraldonline.com/sports/college/article272898315.html#storylink=rss -

Oregon Spring Ball Position Battles: WR room should be main attraction For many reasons, the 2022 season felt like a breath of fresh air for Oregon Duck fans, offensively speaking at the very least. After a few years of gritting through the vanilla offensive scheme that came with Mario Cristobal and his tenure in Eugene, Duck fans were treated to a new system, headed up by Kenny Dillingham. This hurry-up, no-huddle (HUNH) system threw a litany of new elements at the Ducks, including a few things that we hadn’t seen for quite some time in Eugene, like QB snaps from under center, and the reintroduction of the deep ball. It’s that latter half of the equation that really got fans buzzing inside Autzen Stadium. With deep passing back in the mix, the Ducks saw a resurgence at the wide receiver position. No longer were wideouts confined to catching short screens or 5-yard curls over the middle, but they could open up and run, trying to get behind the defense and take the top off. This gave us the emergence of Troy Franklin, who quickly became the team’s top receiver, and one of the best receivers in the Pac-12. While we don’t expect that to change in 2023, what will be interesting to see is who steps up alongside Franklin. Chase Cota was a solid piece last year, but he graduated this off-season. Dont’e Thornton had his moments, but a transfer to Tennessee after the season left his spot on the depth chart vacant. Kris Hutson is still on the team, and he likely has a leg up when it comes to divvying up target shares. However, there is a lot of new competition that he will have to hold off. The Ducks were active in the transfer portal at the WR position this offseason, adding proven players like Traeshon Holden and Tez Johnson to the mix. They also have a handful of incredibly talented, but unproven players who came to Eugene over the past 2 seasons as recruits. Guys like Kyler Kasper, Justius Lowe, and Ashton Cozart will all vie for targets this spring, while 5-star WR Jurrion Dickey will work to state his case for playing time when he arrives in Eugene this summer. Oregon Football: Previewing WR position battle ahead of spring ball DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM There’s a ton of talent at the WR position in Eugene. Signee Spotlight: CB Collin Gill Oregon adds a versatile defensive back from Washington, D.C. in their 2023 class. In today’s spotlight we will be taking a look at another east to west coast connection with the signing of another corner back. Three-star Collin Gill will be joining a corner back room looking to redeem themselves. VITALS: Height/Weight: 6’0/200 pounds -Hometown: Waldorf, MD -High School: St. Johns College High School - First-Team All-WCAC (Washington Catholic Athletic Conference) Defensive back SIGNEE SPOTLIGHT: 2023 Oregon OL Gernorris Wilson EVALUATION Playing a mix of both corner and safety, Gill looked impressive at both spots. When he plays safety he's able to fly to the ball and get a hand up in the receiver's face, forcing regular incompletions. The same thing can be said while at corner, only difference is he'll keep up with the receiver right from the start. Being athletic enough to play both positions also allows him to develop into an elite defensive player by understanding the different views of the defense. His tackling is also great, he breaks down a lot before wrapping up the ballcarrier one-on-one in the open field. He flies to the opposite side of the field if he has to in order to make a play. A lot of his highlights had him batting balls down left and right which is great thing to see. His best trait has to be his timing, getting to receiver just before or as the ball arrives in time to make plays. https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/college/article272894900.html#storylink=rss -

Ten Ducks who need to step up this spring for the team to reach its ceiling Oregon kicks off spring practice in about a week. The Ducks enter spring with high expectations for 2023, and will need to maximize the 15 spring practices, which begin on March 16 and conclude with the spring game on April 29, in order to do so. There was much to address this offseason thanks to graduation, early draft entry and transfers. Over two dozen new players will be on hand for spring to help fill holes. Ultimately, that's what much of what the spring will be about — identifying who fits where best. Atop the priority list will be finding four new offensive line starters, shoring up a defense which was sub-par last season and a special teams unit which struggled mightily down the stretch. Today, I'll be naming 10 members of the team who will need to fill key roles during this spring's practices. Do not consider this to be an exhaustive list by any means. Of course there are more than 10 people who need to step up. These 10 just might be the most integral right now.
