Big Ten ‘committed to nine’ conference games, maintaining Flex Protect Plus football scheduling model with additions of Oregon, Washington

Four weeks since it accepted an invitation to join the Big Ten, Oregon is still awaiting details on its 2024 football schedule.

The Ducks, who have four nonconference games scheduled in 2024, can rest assured that they won’t be required to break any of those contracts.

Oregon will continue to play rival Washington, which also moves from the Pac-12 to Big Ten next year, but who its other conference opponents will be is still being determined, as UO athletic director Rob Mullens said during an in-house radio interview on Thursday that he did not have details about the new schedule.

In June, the Big Ten announced its first divisionless football schedule format for 2024 and 2025 that preserved many of the league’s most significant rivalries in what it called a “Flex Protect Plus” model.

The league is “committed to nine (conference games) for the foreseeable future” and will not be abandoning much of what was previously announced, according to Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny.

Mixed feelings from Oregon basketball coaches, players about Big Ten move: ‘It’s going to be complicated’

Kelly Graves views Oregon’s move to the Big Ten in 2024 with some excitement and trepidation.

The 10th-year Ducks women’s basketball coach feels enthusiasm because it’s new, as do many of his players. The 2024-25 basketball season has more fresh challenges than any in decades for Oregon.

Dana Altman sees the nonconference a bit differently. The 14th-year Oregon men’s coach said he’d prefer to heavily schedule West coast opponents.

“I’m not interested in traveling all over the country playing games in nonconference now,” Altman said.

Altman, 65, has mixed feelings about heading to the Big Ten. He says he’s “really excited” about the new challenge. He likens it to his move to Oregon after spending 16 years at Creighton.

New Big Ten scheduling program will increase travel times

After Oregon football announced its conference matchups for 2024 through 2028, one thing that stood out was the road trip distance. This season, the team will travel 4,509 miles to play games on the road. Next season, all of that changes.

Oregon’s 2024 conference road trip distance is 12,618 miles with just one one-way flight to UCLA being less than 1,000 miles.

And that’s the same for all Pac-12 schools joining the Ducks in the new conference. Washington will travel 16,573 miles over the course of the 2024 conference season. Both Los Angeles schools will each travel over 15,000 miles for their inaugural seasons.

Part of the reason for the long travels is because the Big Ten eliminated the East and West divisions starting in 2024. Instead of the best teams from each division facing each other in the conference championship game, the top two schools with the best conference records at the end of the season will play each other.

When should the Oregon-Washington game be played as part of Big Ten football schedule?

Oregon and Washington will bring their intensifying rivalry to the Big Ten next season, but when the Pacific Northwest matchup will be played is still to be determined.

The Big Ten formally announced the meeting of the Ducks and Huskies among its 12 protected matchups in its 2024-28 football schedules.

Six of those games are played on the final weekend of the regular season, but it’s not a foregone conclusion that the Oregon-Washington game will join those other rivalry games on the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving, which has not happened in the rivalry since 1939...

This Michigan story keeps popping up, and I haven't been paying much attention to it. However, I'm curious if Mr. Stalions ever took the time to watch TCU last year.

Dan Lanning provides comments on Michigan sign-stealing investigation

For the past week, the biggest storyline in college football has been the ongoing investigation into the Michigan Wolverines program and its sign-stealing.

The news dropped on Friday by ESPN's Pete Thamel regarding Connor Stalions, a Michigan assistant, traveling across the country to steal signs against upcoming opponents.

In Thamel's reporting, Stalions would purchase over 30 tickets to games across multiple years to multiple Big Ten games and non-conference games, including a matchup between No. 6 Oregon and No. 25 Washington in 2022, first reported by Jon Wilner of the Mercury News.

"Yeah. I don't have a lot of really thoughts on it. I haven't been focused on it that much," said Oregon head coach Dan Lanning on the investigation. "I mean, ultimately, I think that'll all sort itself out."

For Lanning, that was not the first time Stalions had ventured to watch a game with him involved. According to Thamel's reporting, Stalions had traveled to the SEC Championshiop game between Georgia and Alabama, where Lanning's Georgia Bulldogs would fall to Alabama.

In the College Football Playoffs, Michigan would meet Lanning's Bulldogs in the 2021 Orange Bowl, a game Georgia would win, 34-11.

Lanning, on Wednesday, said the only thing he remembers is the "result of that game" when asked...
