Ducks eek out road win over Texas Tech thanks to late game heroics

The Ducks pride themselves of playing situational football. On Saturday, that paid off when it mattered most.

Trailing by two with five to play, the Ducks executed regulation to perfection. Bo Nix led the offense on a scoring drive, aided by first down passes to Tez Johnson and Patrick Herbert before Camden Lewis hit his third short field goal of the night. The kick gave the Ducks a 31-30 lead, which proved enough to escape with a nail-biting win.

Jeffrey Bassa pulled off his best Mase Funa impersonation on the subsequent drive picking off a Tyler Shoug pass and racing in for six points to seal the 38-30 win.

The win moves the Ducks to 2-0 this season and provides them their first road win of the season.

3 takeaways from Oregon's incredible comeback win over Texas Tech

Oregon rose up off the mat.

Can you believe it? If you still need a few minutes to process what just happened — or maybe come down from that emotional roller coaster — it’s certainly understandable.

Thanks to some late-game magic, No. 13 Oregon (2-0) pulled off a stunning, improbable, incredible, come-from-behind win Saturday night in Lubbock to escape with a 38-30 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The Ducks entered the fourth quarter trailing 27-18 and then outscored Texas Tech 20-3 in the final quarter.

Oregon is in Lubbock on Saturday night for a showdown against Texas Tech. It’s an interesting matchup for the Ducks in their nonconference schedule, and one that can help boost their Playoff résumé should they win.

Oregon holds a 15-7 lead after the first quarter, but the opening 15 minutes wasn’t without some hilarity.

Ducks Storm Back To Win In Lubbock

Camden Lewis made a go-ahead field goal with 1:10 remaining and Jeffrey Bassa's ensuing pick-six clinched No. 13 Oregon's 38-30 win Saturday over Texas Tech at Jones AT&T Stadium.

A scoreless third quarter by the Ducks (2-0) helped the Red Raiders take a 27-18 lead into the fourth quarter. But Oregon outscored Texas Tech in the fourth, 20-3 — including the final 10 points of the game — to come from behind and win.

"Really tough environment to play in," UO coach Dan Lanning said. "A lot of teams would have lost their cool when things weren't going well, and our guys kept their composure the entire game. And they went out and executed down the stretch."

True freshmen tracker: Eight true frosh play in Oregon's road win over Texas Tech

After more than 20 true freshmen played in the opener, eight appeared in Saturday's 38-30 win over Texas Tech

It appears this year's crop is better prepared to help the Ducks win football games than last year's collection. After more than 20 members of the class appeared in the opener, eight played in Saturday's come-from-behind 38-30 win in Lubbock.

“If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. I've said it for a year now. Last year, it didn’t really necessarily matter, because there weren’t as many guys that were good enough. We have guys that are good enough to play for us," Lanning said on Saturday.

"If you can go make an impact in the game, which those young players can, that’s when we’re getting better. We’re developing within our program. We’re developing young players to go make an impact in this game."

A week ago offensive players stole the show, as a few even found the end zone. This time around the majority of contributors came on the other side of the ball.

It came down to the final seconds, but Oregon and head coach Dan Lanning found a way to dig out what appeared to be a growing hole against Joey McGuire and Texas Tech. Despite a valiant effort from Red Raiders QB (and former Oregon QB) Tyler Shough, it was Bo Nix's clutch offensive leadership and a timely 4th quarter pick six from Oregon LB Jeffrey Bassa that sealed the eight point win. Stock Report: Dorlus, Bassa shine while miscues nearly destroy Ducks

We knew after the Oregon Ducks’ season-opening game against the Portland State Vikings that there was still a lot to be uncovered for this team.

With over half of the roster coming in as new faces, a new offensive coordinator, and a set of high expectations, there was a desire among fans, media members, and likely coaches to see how good Dan Lanning’s squad could be in his second year in Eugene.

I think we got an answer to a lot of those questions on Saturday night in Lubbock. The Ducks squeaked out a 38-30 victory in dramatic fashion, using a 45-yard pick-six from LB Jeffrey Bassa to seal the deal late in the game.

It gave Oregon a 2-0 record and now allows fans to largely look past the miscues that put them in a tough place against the Red Raiders.

And boy, were there a lot of miscues.

Following the Portland State victory, in our weekly “stock report” where we identify players who either played well or played poorly, there was nothing but upward movement for the Ducks.

Of course, in an 81-7 victory, you aren’t going to easily identify players who didn’t perform up to par.

Following Week 2, though, we have a few guys who saw their stock drop a bit. as well as a handful of others who are starting to reach their ceiling as Ducks.

Here is our weekly stock report after Oregon’s win over Texas Tech...

Report Card: Ducks receive passing grades, but without much room to spare

It’s a stat Oregon football usually doesn’t have to worry about all that often, but in last night’s 38-30 win over Texas Tech, penalties were almost as much of an opponent for the Ducks as the Red Raiders were.

The Pac-12 refs that were officiating the game threw a flag on Oregon 14 times, with most of them being either false starts or defensive pass interference.

Perhaps it was the combination of some growing pains that come with a new offensive line and new secondary playing their first road game, but Texas Tech will hardly be the most hostile crowd Oregon will face this season.

If Dan Lanning and his staff don’t find a way to clean this up, the Ducks won’t be as lucky to come out with a win the next time.

When Oregon wasn’t getting flagged, it was able to move the ball on a fairly consistent basis, but the defense had some problems keeping containment.

Tyler Shough led all rushers with 103 yards. Again, Shough won’t be the most mobile signal caller this defense is going to face.

Fortunately for the Ducks, not all wins are going to be the Mona Lisa and a prestigious work of art. At the end of the day, they got the win.

Here are the ups and downs of the Week 2 report card...

By the Numbers: Oregon vs Texas Tech

It was a thrilling late afternoon game for the Ducks on the road Saturday. A very fired up Texas Tech team welcomed the Ducks following a tough week one loss to Wyoming on the road.

Oregon fans meanwhile weren’t sure what to expect. It was a dismantling of Portland State in week one but we knew Tech would be ready. And they were. Tyler Shough played a gritty game against his former team but came up short when it mattered most.

You should know the drill by now. Here are ten stats from the game, presented without any other context. It’s amazing how many of the stats between Oregon and Texas Tech were very close.

Column: Is early-season scheduling partially to blame for Oregon's close call in Lubbock?

Season openers are often tricky to get right in the world of college football. Teams across the nation take many different approaches every season. Some schedule cupcakes that provide a smooth on-ramp into the season, allowing them to knock off the rust.

Others like to jump into the deep end, capturing early-season eyeballs with a top-10 matchup that will either catapult them to the top of the rankings or derail their season early on.

The Oregon Ducks have tested both methods over the past decade or so. I’m not convinced either one is the correct strategy at this point.

There are positives and negatives to both, in my eyes.

ESPN FPI: Oregon's struggles vs. Texas Tech cause win probability to drop across the board

The Oregon Ducks accomplished what they needed to accomplish against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock over the weekend, coming back home with a victory.

In the long run of the season, that’s all that will matter as we eventually will look back and forget about the miscues that led to Dan Lanning and his squad needing a nine-point comeback in the 4th quarter to win vs. an unranked team.

For now, however, those memories are still fresh, and that means that current perception of the Ducks has dropped a bit in the national lens.

After each week of the season, we like to look back at the ESPN FPI and see how the projections change based on the previous result. For the Ducks — who were favored to win all but one game coming going into Week 2 — expectations may have cooled off a bit.

While the Ducks are still favored to win every game but one, their win probability has dropped quite a bit in most of the upcoming games, per ESPN.

Despite the win probability drop, the Ducks’ likelihood of winning the national championship increased, likely due to losses elsewhere in the rankings.

Take a look at the latest FPI predictions following Week 2...

NIX NAMED PAC-12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Quarterback Bo Nix has been named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Oregon's 38-30 comeback win at Texas Tech, the conference announced on Monday.

Nix completed 32-of-44 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns in Lubbock, and he led the Ducks with 46 rushing yards while converting on third down with his legs four times. Nix's 32 completions are tied for the seventh-most in UO single-game history, and he surpassed 300 passing yards for the eighth time in his career.

Nix was especially efficient in the fourth quarter, going 8-for-9 for 68 yards while leading Oregon to a touchdown and a pair of field goals. The Ducks scored 20 fourth-quarter points to erase a 27-18 deficit and leave Lubbock with a victory.

This is the fourth career Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week award for Nix, who last season became just the third player in league history to earn the honor three weeks in a row...

Duck pass rush shows more teeth in win over Texas Tech

Oregon's front gave Texas Tech trouble all evening on Saturday, recording five sacks along with the game-sealing hit of Tyler Shough to set up the Jeffrey Bassa's pick six.

After failing to get home in the opening win over Portland State, Oregon's front altered the complexion in Lubbock throughout Saturday night.

The Ducks finished with four total sacks and 15 additional pressures of Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough.

No pressure was bigger than Brandon Dorlus' in the final minute of regulation. The senior reached his former teammate, who'd rolled left, and made contact with his chest plate as the ball was coming out.

The pass fell like a lame duck into Jeffrey Bassa's arms for an easy interception and even easier score.

Watched the Post game Video of Dan Lanning, where he said he was yelling for Bassa to "go Down, go down" after his interception.  This does NOT happen, if you have a Defense, you have faith in.  Pretty scary but in my mind, Coach Lanning, fix the issue with your Defense, adjust find better, do not get locked into something that works right when the world is in synch.  This is how Oregon has taken down so many Goliaths in the past.  Fighting to their strengths and turning it into a street brawl to survive.  Oregon did not always win but they took the shine off many Blue Bloods.  Appalachian State almost did it to @ (17)North Carolina the eastern version of Oregon back in the 90's - 2006.

As fast as TT took to score, You Have to Keep Playing to WIN, not playing to lose.  Protecting a lead with the current defense is not reliable.  If the Defense was even a little better, like Nick Aliotti's, he had safeties that could hit and DB's that disrupted routes and timing.  Not so much with the scheme now.  Pressure, worked the comfort level of Shough.  Forced him to make mistakes.  Front four DL did well how the LB's and Secondary work is a mess.

Forcing Bo to run, is a gamble not worth taking, the Washington game should have showed many.  Not the same QB after the injury.  No capable back up, if this is THE YEAR to make the last run for the Playoffs in the PAC-12, all the eggs in the basket with Bo.  Injuries happen in normal Football, adding to the danger seems a bit crazy.  Put Ty in, then they expect the possibilities of run but with first string OL we get Thompson experience and reps, both important to his and the Ducks future.  Sure the risks are high but Bo showed how important he is to the team through a 12 game season.

I am excited for the PAC-12 in 2023, Two weeks into the season and 8 Conference Teams in the Top 25, feels like we are the SEC for our last season.  Let's make it memorable, the pieces are there, now it all rest on pLANNING and execution.  Do not sell the ducks short.  Blur the lines and Go Ducks!

Game Balls vs Texas Tech

It wasn’t pretty but at the end of the day we’re still talking about an Oregon win. And that is the most important stat in the game of college football.

The Ducks had to grit out a win over Texas Tech on Saturday. And while it wasn’t the blowout Oregon fans wanted, it was a win nonetheless. So now a 2-0 Oregon gets ready to host Hawaii and is two weeks out from hosting a potentially 3-0 Colorado as well.

Before we get to either of those games however, let’s hand out game balls for Saturday’s performance...

Where Oregon's offense ranks nationally in key stats following win vs. Texas Tech

I think even fans of the Oregon Ducks would be willing to admit that the statistics after Week 1 for their favorite team were a bit skewed.

The Ducks beat Portland State 81-7, putting up 729 yards of total offense and scoring 7 touchdowns. As you would expect, that ranked them near the top of the nation in almost every major statistical category when it comes to offensive production.

So now that we have another game to work off of, the stats for Oregon are looking a bit more realistic. That doesn’t mean that the Ducks don’t still have one of the best offenses in the nation, but rather that Oregon fans can feel more validated by the numbers, knowing that they are averaged out by a game against a legitimate Power 5 team.

So where do the Ducks rank now in the major offensive statistics going into Week 3? Let’s take a look...

Duck Tape: Film Review of Week 2, 2023 at Texas Tech

In addition to the usual problem of sacks and scrambles on called passing plays being mixed in with designed quarterback run plays – all of which showed up in this game frequently – the official box score is even more misleading because several rushes that started with a lateral toss were classified by the scorekeeper as pass receptions.

As always, the statistics in this article reflect the actual play design from charting the game film.

Oregon football kicker Camden Lewis recognized by Lou Groza Award

Oregon kicker Camden Lewis earned national recognition for his play in last week’s win at Texas Tech.

Lewis was one of three kickers selected as the Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week for Week 2. UCF’s Colton Boomer and Ole Miss’ Caden Davis were the other two kickers recognized.

Lewis went three for three with two go-ahead field goals in the fourth quarter of Oregon’s 38-30 comeback win.

He made a 23-yarder to put Oregon ahead 28-27 and a 34-yard kick with 1:10 to go that made it 31-30. The fifth-year senior also had a 28-yarder earlier in the game, 3 PATs and handled kickoffs for the No. 13 Ducks.

It’s the first time Lewis has been recognized as a kicker of the week by the Groza Award.

As we start to transition through the week and look ahead to the Oregon Ducks’ week 3 game against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, we wanted to take one last look back at the Week 2 game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders and dive into the grades given by Pro Football Focus.

While we spend a lot of time looking at the box score and various different stat sheets to try and piece together the story of the game, one of the best tools at our disposal is the grades given by Pro Football Focus, where they break down every snap of the contest and given numerical scores for overall performance for each player.

So after the win over Texas Tech, which Oregon players graded out the best according to PFF? Here’s a look...
