Looks like the CFB Playoff in 2024 and 2025 will stay with the 6 champion automatic qualifiers and 6 at large, with the top 4 conference champs receiving a 1st round bye.

Using the latest AP Poll the top 4 seeds, when accounting for conference realignment would be:

1. Georgia - SEC

2. Michigan - B10

3. FSU - ACC

4. Utah - B12

At large - 5, Texas/ 6. Ohio State/ 7. Penn State/ 8. Washington/ 9. USC/ 10. Oregon/ 11. Washington State - MW/ 12. NR Tulane - AAC

Wazzu would knock out 11. Notre Dame. Tulane would knock out 12. Alabama. This is why the 2026 format will likely be a 16-team field seeded in accordance with the final playoff committee rankings with one spot guaranteed for the G5.

Stay with a 12-team field in 2026 with the top 4 ranked teams receiving a 1st-round bye regardless of conference affiliation, and with 1 G5 team in the mix, the top 4 would be :

1. Georgia/ 2. Michigan/ 3. Texas/ 4. Ohio State = 2 SEC teams and 2 B1G teams. Including UW, USC, and Oregon, 6 B1G teams would be in the field with 2 SEC teams, Georgia and Texas in the field.

As Oregon State and Washington State try to figure out their future, it seems like the CFP will not change their system regardless of what happens.

Now, wait a minute!

AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco has come out in favor of a 5/7 format for 2024/2025.

The rub? 9 conference commissioners (and what about the Pac-12's vote, if any,) and the Notre Dame AD, would have to unanimously approve any changes to the existing 6/6 format.

Kliavkoff is in attendance at the playoff committee meeting in Chicago that commenced yesterday and runs through today. But does he have standing to vote when the P-2 has effectively removed him from office? We know that OSU and WSU are not averse to litigation. Would the 2 attempt a power play so that one of the 2 Pac-2 Conference Champions would be in the field?

OSU and WSU push too hard and it could result in the B12 (Fox/ESPN) bringing them into the fold at a discount; or, lead to something like the B1G/SEC holding their own playoff with an invite for the ACC and B12 champs and 1 G5 team to placate the politicians.

The discussion is not over. Based on the 2024 conference realignment, the 5/7 format makes far more sense. What also makes financial sense is a 2nd G5 champion not knocking out Notre Dame.

Like everything CFB today, $ will be the deciding factor. The P4 may have to throw more money at the G5 but there is no world in which anyone in the P4 wants to see a Tulane getting in over a Notre Dame. If the G5 gets a bigger share of the proceeds, other G5 commissioners along with Aresco (even with Tulane being an AAC team) will approve a 5/7 format come 2024.

SOS makes a CFB 'playoff' screwy enough. Giving the 4 top-ranked conference champs a first-round bye instead of the 4 top-ranked teams is senseless. This you do not see even in the 68-team CBB playoff.

With the Pac-12 receiving so many death sentences this summer due to conference realignment, you better believe that will play a huge factor in how the new 12-t
