No. 8 Oregon football favored by more than a field goal at No. 13 Utah

Oregon is favored by more than a field goal at Utah.

The No. 8 Ducks (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12) opened as 4.5-point favorites against the No. 13 Utes (5-1, 3-1) on Saturday (12:30 p.m., Fox), according to Caesars Sportsbook. The over/under is 52.5...

BREAKING: Utah's star LB Lander Barton is out for the remainder of the season

After a thrilling win, Kyle Whittingham confirmed the worst after the game... Utah has lost linebacker Lander Barton for the season after suffering a season-ending injury tonight.

The reigning Pac-12 defensive freshman of the year is lost and that's a tough blow for the Utes.

Barton left the game in the 4th quarter and was seen on the sideline with a shoe off, while limping heavily. After the game, he also exited the locker room with a boot on his right foot and on crutches.

Barton has been a big leader for Utah this season. He does and means so much to this defense. Barton is a fantastic football player but he brings so much from a mental standpoint that often goes unnoticed.

He's been a leader and an emerging quarterback of the defense this season. Barton was really rounding into form and even had one of his better games of the season tonight.

Now, it's going to be tough to replace all that Barton brought to the field but Utah does have depth at linebacker. That depth is headlined by a previous Pac-12 All-Conference selection in Levani Damuni.

The Utes also have Sione Fotu and Justin Medlock, both of whom will need to step up the rest of the season. They provide different skills and traits but Colton Swan will need to get the most out of his group the rest of the season.

This is yet another brutal loss this season, Utah is now approaching double-digit figures for season-ending injuries. Barton is the second starting member of the defensive unit to be lost for the year after Logan Fano was lost a few weeks ago.

Dan Lanning offers injury update on Khyree Jackson, Bucky Irving

Two of the most important players on the Oregon Ducks’ roster, running back Bucky Irving and cornerback Khyree Jackson, missed some time on Saturday in the game against the Washington State Cougars.

In the case of Jackson, the star cornerback missed the entire game after suffering an apparent shoulder injury a week earlier against the Washington Huskies.

Irving went down with an undisclosed injury early in the fourth quarter but eventually returned to the field for the final drive of the game.

On Monday night in his weekly press conference, head coach Dan Lanning offered a brief update on both players’ status going into this week’s game against the No. 13 Utah Utes.

“I think those guys will be good to go this weekend,” Lanning said. “They were both out there at practice today.”

Irving leads the team with 649 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns this season, while Jackson has been the team’s No. 1 cornerback. Without Jackson, the Ducks turned to a combination of Jahlil Florence, Trikweze Bridges, Dontae Manning, and Nikko Reed last weekend...

No. 8 Oregon, No. 13 Utah clash in likely elimination match

Both teams are 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-12.  The team that loses falls out of national championship consideration.

“Big game in the conference picture,” Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said his Monday news conference. “They’re a one-loss team, as are we. Both our backs are to the wall. Hopefully it will be a great football game.”

Utah’s lone blemish is a 21-7 defeat at then-No. 19 Oregon State on Sept. 29. The Ducks lost 36-33 at then-No. 7 Washington in a battle of unbeatens on Oct. 14.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning shares Whittingham’s view that it’s a must-win game.

Utah Safety Sione Vaki Trending Toward Primarily Playing Offense For Utah

Before the season started, there were many prognosticators who felt safety Sione Vaki could be a breakout star for Utah. They were correct, but the surprise is how that is happening.

It is no secret the Utes have been banged up from the jump in 2023 and were in desperate need of a spark- particularly on offense.

Utah’s coaching staff went to work doing what it does best when their backs are against a wall- identifying their best available players and moving them in positions to be difference makers. Vaki happened to be one of those players.

This is the one Utah player articles have been saying the Ducks need to pay extra attention to...

5 Utah Utes Oregon needs to look out for on Saturday

Not many would have thought Utah would be in this position without their starting quarterback Cam Rising. The Utes are No. 13 in the country with a 6-1 record and are coming off a big win over USC on the road.

And all of this has been done by switching quarterback numerous times between Bryson Barnes and Nate Johnson, neither of whom has been spectacular, but both of whom have been serviceable.

It’s been the Utah defense that has held everything together and it’s that defense that will give the Utes a good chance against Oregon this Saturday.

They have one of the best defensive ends in the country as well as an opportunistic and fundamentally sound unit that gives Utah a fighting chance, no matter who is at quarterback.

Currently, it looks as if Barnes has won the job after his good game at USC, but he has shown to be inconsistent at best.

These are the five Utes Oregon needs to pay close attention to if the Ducks want to get out of Rice-Eccles Stadium with a win on Saturday...

College football predictions Week 9: Florida-Georgia, Oregon-Utah lead top picks

Final picks for this week's biggest games.

OREGON -7 AT UTAH

12056536.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,off

Hummer (Oregon -7) — This is a tough spot for Oregon. The Utes just don’t lose at home. They’ve won 18 straight and 29 of their last 30 in Salt Lake City, a stretch that includes multiple wins against top 10 Oregon teams. But this one should be different. As well coached as Utah is and as good as Utah’s defense is, it doesn’t have the offensive firepower to keep up with Oregon.

The Utes rank 101st nationally in yards per play. Oregon ranks third. Yes, Utah’s toughness often closes the talent gap in this series – in fact, the Utes have often just run over the Ducks in recent years – but I think Oregon’s offensive firepower is too much to overcome. … Oregon 28, Utah 20.

Crawford (Utah +7) — Betting against Utah is dangerous, especially with the Utes playing at home, where they've won 18 straight — so we're not doing it here. The Ducks have more firepower offensively, but considering this one's a must-win for both teams with a lot on the line, I'll take the home team getting a touchdown. This is not a preferred play by any means in Week 9, but I feel there's value here with the rare opportunity you can get the Utes with points in Salt Lake City. ... Oregon 31, Utah 30.

Series History: A look back at the history of Oregon vs. Utah

The Oregon Ducks will face off against the Utah Utes this Saturday for the final matchup between these two schools as members of the Pac-12.

The era of these teams being in the same conference has been short, but it has also been fruitful. Some of the Ducks’ best games over the last ten years have come against Utah.

Most recently, Oregon took down the Utes 20-17 in Autzen Stadium last November. The game came a week after Oregon dropped its second game of the season to Washington.

Bo Nix had suffered an injury late in the Washington game and was hindered throughout most of the game against Utah. But, late in the game when it mattered most, Nix used his legs to pick up a game-clinching first down for the Ducks.

Oregon has an all-time record of 24-12 over Utah and a 6-4 record in the Pac-12 era. Since the Utes joined the Pacific Athletic Conference in 2011, the Ducks have had five head coaches, while Utah has remained steadfast with Kyle Whittingham — one of the longest-tenured coaches in the sport...

Learning to master the pressure

It’s undeniable that those who have the ball in their hands –– those fans call superstars, gamechangers or legends –– are the ones that attract praise.

They’re the ones on billboards, hoisting trophies and selling jerseys. If one asks a young child (or even a seasoned adult fan), they’re far more likely to cite Bo Nix or Marcus Mariota as their “favorite player” than any other member of the team.

But that’s just it. It’s members of the team, even those who take the field three or four times a game for a single play, who deserve the label of “gamechanger.”

Because a gamechanger is that player who has the will and ability to shoulder the pressure of tens of thousands of fans in a stadium –– of millions around the world –– and channel it into something that allows them to attempt an act of brilliance.

Who fills that void in America’s most-watched sport, if not the quarterback?

Camden Lewis is the Oregon Ducks’ fifth-year kicker. He’s gone from something of an unknown quantity in 2019 to one of the team’s veteran fixtures.

In his words in an interview during Oregon’s 2023 media day from 247Sports’ YouTube channel, “I feel very old.”

In the Cornelius, N.C. native’s five years in Eugene, he’s improved exponentially, bettering his field goal make percentage in every complete season but 2020, and defining what a kicker can be.

Lewis told reporters at Oregon’s 2023 media day, “I’ve tried to focus on [improving] kickoffs…but honestly it’s just confidence –- you don’t get nervous any more after this long [and] I feel like a different person after this long.”

That confidence is what drives gamechangers in high-pressure moments, when adrenaline is coursing through their veins.

This is  very good article as very few words are written about kickers during the season...

3 Reasons Why The Oregon Ducks Will Beat Utah On Saturday

On Saturday, the Oregon Ducks bounced back from a tough loss to Washington by defeating Washington State 38-24. Bo Nix was 18-25 for 293 yards and 2 TDs.  Bucky Irving had 15 carries for 129 yards and 2 TDS on the ground.

With the victory, Oregon moved to 6-1 on the season. This Saturday, Oregon will compete in another pivotal Pac-12 matchup against the battle-tested #13 Utah Utes. The Utah Utes have had to deal with a number of injuries.

QB Cam Rising and TE Brant Kuithe are out for the season. As a matter of fact, seven players are out for the season for the Utes.

Nevertheless, the Utah Utes remain undaunted. For the fourth year in a row, they defeated the USC Trojans. This latest victory was due to a last-second field goal that left Caleb Williams and the USC fanbase miserable.

However, the Oregon Ducks are a different animal for Utah to be worried about.

Injury Report: Updated look at injury news for No. 8 Oregon and No. 13 Utah

It’s Week 9 of the college football season and the two injury reports for Oregon and Utah are very different.

The Ducks are relatively healthy with just one player definitely out, but the Utes have a long laundry list of injured players that are out for the season, or dealing with certain nagging injuries going into this week.

The Utes’ injuries haven’t seemed to slow them down much as Utah is 6-1 overall, 3-1 in conference, and are coming off an impressive 34-32 win at USC.

Quarterback Cam Rising is the biggest name on the list, but the all-Pac-12 performer has been out all season. Utah is just now getting used to the fact Rising will not be available in 2023.

Oregon received a bit of a scare last week when running back Bucky Irving went down late in the Washington State game, he should be good to go against Utah on Saturday.

Here is an updated look on injuries that you should be aware of going into this game...

Oregon vs. Utah: 'Tale of the Tape' for No. 8 Ducks vs. No. 13 Utes

The intensity is being ramped up once again for fans of the Oregon Ducks.

After a relatively laid-back week against the Washington State Cougars, Dan Lanning and his team travel down to Salt Lake City this weekend to take on the No. 13 Utah Utes in a high-intensity game that will draw the eyes of the nation to Rice-Eccles Stadium.

ESPN’s ‘College GameDay’ will be there, and the No. 8 Ducks will have an opportunity to prove that they can get the job done against a top-rated team on the road, setting themselves up in a great position to make it to the Pac-12 Championship Game, and potentially the College Football Playoff as well

It’s not going to be easy, but based on the matchup, this is a game that the Ducks should be able to win if they stay true to form and play their own game. To get a closer look at the specific areas where Oregon will need to perform well, let’s break down the tape and look at the numbers on paper.

Oregon Ducks vs Utah Utes: 5 Things to Watch

The last time the Oregon Ducks went into Rice Eccles Stadium and came away with a win, it was on a game winning touchdown pass from a hometown kid nobody knew named Justin Herbert.

Upsetting the #12 Utes at home would be one of the few bright spots in a 4-8 season for the Ducks.

This year, the contest is between a pair of top 15 teams, each with one loss, and each with a solid path to a conference title, and perhaps even a playoff berth.

Each team is off to a new conference after the season as #8 Oregon heads to the Big10 and #13 Utah to the Big12, making this the final regular season showdown between the 2 teams that have consistently been at the top of the soon-to-be-former Pac 12.

There is a lot riding on a game that brings ESPN’s College Gameday to town.

Nick Bartlett’s Week 9 SuperWest Fearless CFB Predictions

No. 8 Oregon at No. 13 Utah
Saturday, Oct 28
12:30 pm PT, FOX

Utah’s story this year has proven heartwarming. Most people wrote them off without Cam Rising and Brant Kuithe—me too.

Nevertheless, the Utes have continued to win and are somehow amongst the favorites to win the conference.

Utah’s scoring defense is ranked 11th in the nation, and they will need to pace themselves if they’d like to hold up against Oregon.

If UO can’t beat Utah with the Utes missing their two best players, I don’t want to hear anything from Eugene for the rest of the year.

Bo Nix has improved in big games, but he usually falls short. Not this time.

3 Keys to victory for the Oregon Ducks against the Utah Utes

On Saturday, the Oregon Ducks will face off against the Utah Utes in what will surely be one of their toughest tests of the season.

The Utah Utes are without their best QB Cam Rising — as they have been all season — but in recent weeks, Bryson Barnes has emerged as a strong leader for the Utes’ offense. Sione Vaki, a safety, has also started playing RB for Utah and has seen a lot of success.

The Ducks will have their hands full on Saturday, but they also have the tools necessary to win this game.

Below, are the three things I think are most necessary for Oregon to do to leave Salt Lake City with another tally in the win column this Saturday...
