Fox broadcaster Joel Klatt says, “Bo Nix is good” as Oregon leads Utah

Last week, Kyle Wittingham’s Utah Utes put a lid on Lincoln Riley’s Caleb Williams’ led offense in their win over USC. Last year’s Heisman trophy winner did throw for any touchdowns against Utah, but Bo Nix threw two in the first half. He also ran in the first score of the game.

Instant Reactions: Oregon's hot start allows for a thrashing of Utah

Oregon coming out of Utah with a win would have been nice, but no one expected them to win quite like this.

The Ducks dominated the Utes for four quarters in Salt Lake City and Oregon goes back to Eugene with a 35-6 victory.

They’re now 7-1 overall, 4-1 in conference, and have the bragging rights, for now, as the best team in the Pac-12. The win also broke Utah’s 18-game home winning streak.

It was a given that Oregon would put points on the board, but the Duck defense completely stifled Utah’s offense and held them to single figures.

Safety Tysheem Johnson was the defensive star of the game with his two interceptions and Oregon held Utah to just 99 rushing yards and 241 total yards...

Bo Nix has his Heisman moment in blowout victory in Salt Lake City

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix led Oregon's offense to a blowout win over the Utes in Salt Lake City and in the process further solidified his Heisman Trophy candidacy.

It had been nearly a decade since an opponent blasted Utah on its home field by as many points as the No. 8 Ducks did on Saturday.

Jon Gold: Oregon's Dan Lanning keeps a pitch-perfect perspective after definitive win at No. 13 Utah

Judging by the guns a sleeveless Kyle Whittingham bared on Friday in a surprise visit to ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show, the No. 8 Oregon Ducks had to know they would be in for a fight on Saturday on the road at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Whittingham was the star of the show Friday, riding onto the set on a Harley, challenging the similarly sleeveless McAfee to an arm-wrestling contest. And winning.

The No. 13 Utah Utes have been dealt blow after blow this year, most glaringly with the season-ending injuries to arguably their 3 best offensive players — quarterback Cam Rising, tight end Brant Kuithe and running back Micah Bernard — but Whittingham’s Utes don’t know the definition of the word quit.

So Dan Lanning and the Ducks knew they’d have to be particularly feisty against the claw-your-eyes-out Utes.

It wasn’t too much of a surprise, then, to see them choose to receive the opening kickoff.

What happened next? A surprise...

7 major takeaways from No. 8 Oregon's demolishing 35-6 win over No. 13 Utah

If there were any doubts about how good this Oregon Ducks team can be going into Saturday, there shouldn’t be anymore.

After a non-conference slate that featured very few major tests, and a loss in their biggest game so far this year up in Seattle, Dan Lanning and the Ducks faced a major test in Week 9, traveling to a hostile Salt Lace City environment to take on the No. 13 Utah Utes, a team that almost never loses at home.

It’s hard to picture things going any better for the Ducks.

They jumped out to an early lead, and leaned on a suffocating defense to keep the Utes out of the endzone for the entire game, going on to a dominant 35-6 win.

It gave us a clear front-runner in the Pac-12 Conference, a clear-cut candidate for the Heisman Trophy, and a ton of answered questions about who this Oregon team really is.

Here are some of our biggest takeaways from the game...

Duck defense reaching its ceiling as November looms

It had been six decades since Oregon last held Utah without a touchdown. You'd have to look back to that memorable 14-6 win at Autzen Stadium in 1968 to find it.

The Utes as a program had not concluded any game without a touchdown since a 10-3 loss to Washington in the 2018 Pac-12 Championship Game.

As Dan Lanning said shortly after Saturday's 35-6 win, the Ducks put together their best overall performance since he took over last year, and that was especially true when the Utes possessed the football.

"I think of all the games I've experienced since I've been here, our defense capitalized on putting out the fire," Lanning said.

Utah reached the red zone just twice. Once following Oregon's first lost fumble of the season, and a second time with a short field. Both trips resulted in field goals.

The Utes amassed just 241 total yards, had no drives span more than 53 yards and turned it over twice after giving it away just four times over the season's first seven games.

How close is this to the best these Ducks can play?

No. 8 Oregon ends No. 13 Utah's home winning streak with impressive victory

Statement made.

It wasn't the flashiest or most dominating win for No. 8 Oregon, but it was one of the most convincing of the season for the Ducks.

Dan Lanning's team went to Salt Lake City to face No. 13 Utah and came away with the first victory for an opponent at Rice-Ecceles Stadium since 2020.

The Utes' 18-game winning streak had been a feather in the cap of the team, and it came crashing down thanks to a balanced attack on both sides of the ball for the Ducks...

Stock Report: No. 8 Ducks see nothing but risers in demolition over No. 13 Utah

Over the past day, I’ve tried several times to accurately depict what the No. 8 Oregon Ducks did to the No. 13 Utah Utes in their home stadium on Saturday afternoon, but nothing will ever be as accurate or eye-opening as the way that Utah coach Kyle Whittingham described it after the game.

“That’s as thoroughly and as soundly as we’ve been beaten in a long time, particularly at home,” Whittingham said. “Give Oregon credit, they are a complete football team just like I’ve been saying all week long.”

Report Card: Ducks reach honor roll status in blowout over Utah

Let’s face it, Oregon was hoping they would play well enough to get out of Salt Lake City with a win of any kind. No one had done that in three seasons and the Ducks needed a signature road win.

They got it and then some.

Oregon dominated the Utes in every facet of the game in the 35-6 beating of Utah in front of a national television audience on FOX.

The Duck defense held the Utes out of the end zone, a feat that hadn’t been done since 2018 and the offense set the tone at the beginning of each half with touchdowns.

With the win, the Ducks moved up in both polls and Bo Nix is finally being considered as a top Heisman Trophy candidate.

It was probably the best week for the program in the Dan Lanning Era and the report card is going to reflect it...

Snap Count Takeaways: Major notes from Oregon's usage report vs. Utah

It’s not normal that you get to see some of your depth pieces and bench players in a top-15 matchup that is expected to be the best game of the day in the college football world, but it’s quickly becoming clear that the 2023 Oregon Ducks are not a normal team.

They’ve proven that they’re better than we expected them to be.

In a 35-6 win over the then-ranked No. 13 Utah Utes, Dan Lanning and his team jumped out quickly and put the game away early, largely running out the clock for the final half of the game and ultimately getting some playing time for depth pieces on the team.

While the starters shouldered the load early on, we got to see some young guys get valuable experience late.

As we do each week, let’s take a dive into the usage report for Oregon and see what we can glean from the snap counts going forward...

Where Oregon's offense ranks nationally in key stats following win over Utah

While it was the Oregon Ducks’ defense who got a lot of the storylines on Saturday after holding the No. 13 Utah Utes out of the endzone in a top-15 matchup, I would argue that Bo Nix and the offense had a more impressive day, putting up numbers with ease on a Utah defense that ranked as one of the best in the nation.

Though the total numbers might not be up to where the Ducks usually see them against average teams in the Pac-12, Oregon’s ability to pick apart the Utes’ defense should not be overlooked.

At this point in the season, we’ve seen the cream rise to the top when it comes to national rankings, and the Ducks are currently sitting pretty.

Here’s where they rank nationally in some key statistics after Week 9.

Where Oregon's defense ranks nationally in key statistics after win over Utah

What the Oregon Ducks defense did on Saturday afternoon against the Utah Utes team will go down as one of the best performances of the year.

Of course, there won’t be songs written about Utah’s offense under Bryson Barnes this season, but the fact that Tosh Lupoi’s unit was able to so completely shut down the Utes and keep them out of the endzone from start to finish is nothing to look past.

Unsurprisingly, the result boosted Oregon up in a ton of top statistics nationally, with the Utes only racking up 142 passing yards and 99 rushing yards on the day.

So just how good is Oregon’s defense now when we look at it from a national perspective? Take a look...

Ranking Oregon's top 10 players vs. Utah according to PFF grades

While the Oregon Ducks proved over the last weekend that they are indeed playing as well as any team in the nation, a handful of players on both the offense and defense showed that they are truly coming into their own as the season goes on.

Whether it’s Evan Williams and Tysheem Johnson continuing to shine in the secondary, or Jeffrey Bassa and Jestin Jacobs holding it down in the middle of the field, Oregon’s defense looked as good as it has all season in a blowout win over the Utah Utes.

Likewise, Bo Nix had one of the most complete games of the season on offense, while Bucky Irving, Jordan James, Troy Franklin, and Traeshon Holden all stood out at their respective positions as well.

So which players performed the best in that game?

As always, we turn to Pro Football Focus’ grades to see where everyone graded out...
