15 young Oregon Ducks who have big-time breakout opportunities in the Fiesta Bowl

It’s the time of the year when we see football rosters in flux across the nation, whether it be due to players leaving via the transfer portal, or others opting out of bowl games and declaring for the NFL Draft.

That means that there are holes to fill on teams playing in bowl games across the nation, and young players with opportunities to step up and make a name for themselves.

In other words, it’s a perfect opportunity for breakouts to take place.

“Every one of these games, you’re gonna see somebody who probably hasn’t made a huge impact throughout the season that shows up in a bowl game,” Lanning said after practice on Friday. “So I’m excited to see the progress they make over these next several weeks. And then the opportunity to get on the field and make an impact.”

The Oregon Ducks have seen a good amount of roster turnover so far since the season ended, with a handful of players entering the transfer portal, and a few others declaring for the draft. We will undoubtedly see more of both take place between now and the Fiesta Bowl against Liberty on New Year’s Day.

So with those departures comes a chance for some young players to step up. Here are the guys who we have our eye on to potentially have a breakout in the bowl game:

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

A look at some of the young Oregon Ducks on the roster with the biggest breakout opportunities in the Fiesta Bowl.

Freshman Iapani Laloulu preparing to make first career start in Fiesta Bowl

Iapani Laloulu never played center in youth football or at the high school level, but in about two weeks time the true freshman will likely make his first start at that very position.

"Coming here from high school, I never thought I'd play center," he told media on Tuesday afternoon. "I'd never played center in my whole life until I got here."

Commonly referred to by his middle name "Poncho", Laloulu began working at center during spring practice. As he tells it, his position coach, A'lique Terry, followed a hunch and surprised the freshman by asking him to take a rep there midway through camp.

"I'm like 'Center? You're scaring me right now'," Laloulu recalled of that moment. "Bo is in the back too, and I'm like 'I've got to make sure nothing happens to Bo'."

Laloulu has taken to the position well, and the Ducks are lucky for that. With Jackson Powers-Johnson skipping the Fiesta Bowl to get a jumpstart on his NFL career, Laloulu and left guard Marcus Harper have been sharing time there during bowl prep practices.

Five Questions Heading into Oregon's matchup against Liberty in the Fiesta Bowl

The No. 8 ranked Oregon Ducks have entered the bowl game week as the Ducks are now less than a week out from taking on the undefeated and No. 23 ranked Liberty Flames. That means it's time to start diving into this game, and we've got plenty of questions about the roster and makeup of the Ducks as they prepare for their final game of the year.

"Every one of these games you're gonna see some of the probably hasn't made a huge impact throughout the season that shows up in a bowl game. So I'm excited to see the progress they make over these next several weeks. And then the opportunity to get on the field and make an impact."

Going into the Bowl Game on Monday from Glendale, Arizona we have five questions around Oregon's stars and the underclassmen who play behind them this season.

IRVING KEY COG TO UO BROTHERHOOD

When it came to first impressions, Bucky Irving made quite a few memorable ones with the Oregon football team. In the two years since, he's forged bonds of brotherhood that have only further endeared the UO running back to his teammates.

Irving joined the Ducks in 2022 after spending one year at Minnesota. His talent and competitiveness were immediately apparent to his new teammates.

Monday's Fiesta Bowl will bring Irving's two-year Oregon career to a close, after two 1,000-yard rushing seasons. But Irving's teammates will remember him for much more than his production on the field.

After making such a strong first impression, he has cemented his connection with the Ducks ever since.
