Michigan was perfect in 2023 -- and lost nearly every key part. On the challenging rebuild ahead. Plus: B1G power rankings, top football/hoops coaching combos and more.

OBD friends, B1G Tradition is worth a daily check-in. The above is a weekly feature that has some interesting takes on Oregon. But don't rely on Matt Hayes to get his facts straight.

Example: Dillon Gabriel has started 49 of the 50 games he has played in. DG has not started 51 games as Hayes reported. Nevertheless, an average of 3 TD passes a game (1) is not too shabby.

The best B1G coaching duo? According to Hayes, Lanning and Altman are No. 1.

Thanks for the post!

Ranking the B1G football coaches. Zack Neel can always be counted on for some interesting and puzzling rankings.

Shiano and Locksley are ranked below David Braun. A guy who had a very good 1st season but is 8-5 in his head coaching career at NW and failed in his 1st season of recruiting.

Indiana coach Cignetti is 119-35 in his college career; not 19-4. Braun at 8-5 is rated higher than Cignetti? Yet, Lincoln Riley, a guy who Dan Lanning has recently out-recruited and defeated is ahead of DL because of his 'body of work?" A body of work compiled when Riley had a roster advantage in the B12. Franklin is dinged for not winning the big games. Riley is Playoff 0-3.

These rankings like so many of Neel's rankings are based on facts when they support him and his gut when he feels like it.

IMO, when ranking coaches, the capital invested in a program should be taken into consideration. Shiano and Locksley have less money to work with than DL, Riley, and Ryan Day. Your record is the ultimate benchmark but based on ROI, Braun was probably the best coach in the B1G in 2023.

Fun stuff to ponder in a long off-season.

A CFP run in 2024 for the Oregon Ducks require statementz wins, says ESPN

The Oregon Ducks have been on the cusp of making the College Football Playoff over the past two years under Dan Lanning, but late-season losses tripped them up in both instances, with a defeat to Oregon State in 2022 ending the playoff dreams, while a loss to Washington in the Pac-12 Championship in 2023 cut things short.

So what will Lanning and his team need to do in 2024 in order to make the newly expanded, 12-team playoff? That’s a question that ESPN posited for the top 25 teams in the nation this year going into the spring season. Here’s what they had to say about the Ducks:

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

If the Oregon Ducks are going to make a run to the College Football Playoff in 2024, it will require some statement wins, according to ESPN.

Five Players From Oregon’s 2023 Signing Class Poised for Bigger Roles

There's turnover every year in college football. It's part of the game. Sometimes coaches get players for just a single year. Sometimes it's four or even five.

But the best coaches bring in top talent year after year and reload their roster rather than rebuild.

The Ducks lost a number of top players from the 2023 season including quarterback Bo Nix, wide receiver Troy Franklin and defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus to name a few.

Today I'm taking a look at five players from Oregon's 2023 signing class, which was ranked No. 9 by 247Sports, that are poised for a larger role next season.

Dickey was Oregon's lone 5-star recruit in the 2023 class, but we didn't see much of him as a true freshman. He appeared in five games (including the Fiesta Bowl) and caught one pass for seven yards.

His debut season in Eugene was limited in part by a meniscus injury he suffered his senior year of high school that he was recovering from. There was also a deep group of wide receivers under Junior Adams, which could've been part of the reason we didn't see more of him.

Entering 2024 there's still plenty of talent in the room, but maybe Troy Franklin's departure frees up some snaps that could come Dickey's way. He's an incredible athlete that has great ball skills and a strong frame at 6'2", 215 pounds that helps him eat up yards after the catch.

Pleasant appeared in seven games as a true freshman and made an impact play in the Fiesta Bowl, forcing a fumble against Liberty.

His agility, top-end speed and ball skills should make him a capable defender against most matchups despite being a bit undersized. He's an elite athlete that needs to see the field more in year two, even if that means getting the ball in his hands as a return man on special teams or even as a gadget guy on offense---something that was discussed as a possibility during his recruitment.

The 6'3", 330-pound pound sophomore appeared in eight games as a true freshman and recorded two tackles.

With so many players gone from a veteran-laden defensive line in 2023, Washington is a player that has a great opportunity for an increased role alongside someone like Bent Roberts, who enters his third year in Eugene.

His physicality and athleticism were part of what made him so special as a four-star high school recruit and some people I spoke with on the high school scene believe he was a snub from the All-American Bowl.

Gardner didn't see as many snaps as Washington, but don't let that subtract from his potential. After playing in just three games, the redshirt freshman is another player that could be in the mix for Tony Tuioti in 2024.

Former Duck Casey Rogers was impressed by Gardner last year in spring ball, calling him an advanced freshman.

"My'Keil Gardner has soaked things up. He's probably one of the most advanced freshmen I've ever seen come in and pick up a scheme and technique in the first couple of weeks and months he's been here."

I think some people might have forgotten about Mixon after the Ducks signed three more elite linebackers in 2024. His versatility and athleticism made him a special talent in the 2023 class, as he played linebacker, EDGE, running back and even some quarterback for Sacred Heart Cathedral as a senior in high school.

I think having a full year of the Oregon defense and speed of the college game under his belt did him some good and being able to focus solely on linebacker helped him. Jestin Jacobs and Jeffrey Bassa are the likely starters at linebacker, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see him line up next to Devon Jackson and/or Connor Soelle as part of the two-deep in his second year.

Which Big Ten teams will be the biggest rivals for Oregon going forward?

For the past several decades in the world of the Pac-10, and then the Pac-12, the Oregon Ducks have been comfortable in the fact that they knew who their biggest rivals were. You had Oregon State, you had Washington, you had Stanford, you had USC, and you even had Utah to an extent later in the lifespan of the conference.

Things are going to change in the future, though.

With Oregon’s jump to the Big Ten Conference, we are losing a lot of rivalries that became commonplace over the years. The Ducks will still play the likes of Washington, USC, and Oregon State going forward, but now they have a new pool of teams that will be on the yearly schedule, and a whole pool of potential rivalries to jump into.

This past week on the Sco-ing Long Podcast co-hosts Jonathan Stewart and Zachary Neel discussed which teams in the Big Ten would end up being the biggest rivals for the Ducks going forward.

To decide who the best candidates were, both Stewart and Neel assigned a number value to each team in the conference from 1-10 (10 being the strongest) for how fierce the upcoming rivalry would be.

Here’s what they came up with, and some of their reasoning.

A look at which teams in the Big Ten will likely be the biggest rivals for the Oregon Ducks when it comes to the new expanded conference.

As Oregon and Washington head to Big Ten, a new chapter in the rivalry begins

The landscape of college football is going to look a lot different in 2024 than it has in the past, and that is especially true for the Oregon Ducks.

While the expanded College Football Playoff will have an impact on every team in the nation, Oregon is one of several teams that are moving to a new conference, joining the Big Ten along with Washington, USC, and UCLA.

The new expanded conference offers a ton of exciting matchups for the Ducks, but it could potentially change some things that Oregon fans have come to know and love over the last several decades. In particular, there’s a good chance that rivalries will look quite a bit different in the future.

Oregon will still play the likes of Washington, Oregon State, and USC going forward, but with the addition of games against Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, and several other Big Ten teams, there’s a chance that some of the existing rivalries get watered down.

This past week on the Sco-ing Long Podcast, co-hosts Jonathan Stewart and Zachary Neel discussed this. In particular, they talked about Oregon’s rivalry with the Huskies. While it definitely stood as the biggest rivalry for the Ducks throughout their time in the Pac-12, Neel argues that it might lose some of its steam going forward, for various reasons.

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

The Oregon Ducks and Washington Huskies will likely enter a new chapter of their long-standing rivalry as new members of the Big Ten.

UW will be the last game in the regular season year after year. The Huskies are the Ducks' only permanent opponent in the B1G.

Because they will meet every season with the game having an impact on Oregon's post-season goals, champ game, and playoff, I expect the Cascade Clash will be right at the top if not at the top of Oregon's B1G rivalries. How dramatic was the 2023 Apple Cup when UW needed a late FG to win the game? WSU could have put a big dent in UW's PO hopes.

Beginning in 2024, Oregon will play Michigan and Ohio State in 2026 and 2027. No games vs. these 2 in 2025 and 2028. 3 games vs. USC in the next 5 seasons, 2025, 2026, and 2028, 2 of the 3 games will be played in Eugene. In the same period, Oregon will play UW 5 times; 3 games in Eugene.

Ducks Wire, IMO, does not pay enough attention to schedules when making many down-the-road predictions.

Thank you, NJ.

This will be Dillon Gabriel's 6th and not 5th season of college football.

Do you think The Portal matters?

Offense - 6 transfers: Gabriel; Tez Johnson; Stewart (due to QB injuries among other issues, I think it is a stretch to call Stewart a 'star' at A+M but he has star potential; Holden: Cornelius; and Brewer from Indiana.

Defense - 7 transfers: Caldwell; Burch; Jacobs; Muhammad; Alexander; Savage; and Johnson.

That's some fine Portal Picking.

ESPN names Elijah Rushing as potential instant-impact freshman in 2024

There are a lot of new faces on the Oregon Ducks roster as we get prepared for spring football to start in just a couple of weeks, many of whom were members of the historic recruiting class that ranked fifth in the nation for the 2024 cycle.

One of those players is 5-star EDGE Elijah Rushing, who was the top-ranked player in the class for the Ducks. Rushing stands at 6-foot-6, 250 pounds, and is rated as the No. 26 overall player in the nation.

When previewing rosters and players ahead of the spring season, ESPN recently went through the top-rated defensive linemen in the class and picked out individuals who could have an instant impact as true freshmen. Rushing was one of those players.

Here’s what they had to say about the new Duck:

Oregon ranked among top Big Ten schools in 2024, per Athlon Sports

It’s ranking season in the world of college football, and while spring practices have either just begun or are getting set to begin in the next couple of weeks across the nation, publications are making a point to get their last “pre-spring” rankings out into the ether.

We’ve done the same here at Ducks Wire, giving you our projected Preseason Top 25, our way-too-early Big Ten Power Rankings, and our Big Ten schedule rankings, among other things. Five under-the-radar Ducks who could have big springs

Here are five Ducks who most fans aren't talking about who could use spring as a springboard to a bigger role in fall.

Spring football opens in less than a week.

Each year I like to identify a handful of players who I believe are outside of the realm of most average Duck football conversations but who I believe are capable of entering them with a strong spring and subsequent offseason. I'm choosing from players who have yet to become regular starters during their college careers. For some that seems unlikely to change in 2024, but my sense is that these five are each capable of becoming much more widely known.

I am not considering any newcomers for this exercise, as the focus is on players who have been on the team, but have yet to really pop.
