Charles Fischer Administrator No. 1 Share Posted March 10 Ducks lost in the ninth inning on Friday to Arizona State, won the game in the ninth inning on Saturday, and today grabbed the lead and did not falter. I groaned when Jacob Walsh came to the plate with two outs and bases loaded, because he has a tough time hitting the low breaking ball...and I feared another strikeout. We needed some runs, being down by two...and then he hits a GRAND SLAM home run. Shows what I know! Great to see Logan Mercado, the pride of the Tri-Cities in Washington, come in and finish off two and third innings for the save. I recall when he got here as a freshman--he got shelled often that first year, as he did not have any high-velocity fast balls, and only had a diving breaking ball that everyone figured out. Now...he has that breaking ball, but has also built his arm to where he threw fastballs at 93 mph today and when combined with his quick wind-up...it can catch batters by surprise. More coming later, but it was a good start to Pac-12 play with a series win. Next up are the Portland Pilots on Tuesday at 5:05 PM, and then a home series starting on Friday against the Cal Bears, who beat Stanford on Tuesday, and has already clinched their series this weekend with UCLA! Should be a GREAT series... Jacob Walsh 1 2 1 Mr. FishDuck
EastBayDuckDad Moderator No. 2 Share Posted March 10 Great for the Ducks to take the series in Tempe. Walsh is now coming through with his bat. While starting pitching is still an issue, the bullpen has plenty of fresh arms and Oregon fights back from the early deficits. The Oregon bats are starting to come to life. Thursday's Duck Insider pointed out that between Heard (.414 BA) Boettcher (.333), Aroz (.423) and Cassella (.259) there are four solid hitting OFs that play good defense. Three home series with Cal, Arizona and Seattle are next up.
Charles Fischer Author Administrator No. 3 Share Posted March 10 Our starting pitchers are not strong, and frankly...we've had a ton more fielding errors than I am used to seeing from Oregon Baseball. But the bats have improved a ton in the last few weeks, and I am hopeful that the new starting pitchers will improve. Coach Waz is figuring out an infield that has fewer errors, and that takes some time to balance defensive skills with the best bats. Anson Aroz is making it hard to keep him out of the lineup somewhere...he started at catcher, but with Bennett Thompson doing so well--he's played in Right Field, and even First Base! 1 Mr. FishDuck
